Free Skin Cancer Screening at UCSF
WHAT: In honor of National Skin Cancer Awareness Month, the UCSF Department of Dermatology is offering free skin cancer screenings. The event is co-sponsored by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano. No appointment is necessary and no insurance is required.
WHEN: Saturday, April 21, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The screenings will take approximately 30 minutes.
WHERE: 1701 Divisadero Street, third floor, San Francisco.
WHY: Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, with more than three million skin cancers diagnosed annually in some two million people in the United States. More new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year than the combined totals of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25 to 29 years old. Anyone can develop skin cancer, regardless of skin color or general health. Many can be easily treated when detected early.

Well, not actually because this particular car vs. bike from last year happened to be the impatient cyclist’s fault, because he went across against a red, because bike riders don’t have as much time to cross as they used to, owing to the newish dedicated cyclist light Oh well.
Anyway, I would have said that Santa installed all the new hardware, but I was beaten to the punch by Dale Danley / Panhandle Park Stewards, who naively wonder why the Panhandle Bandshell went away despite the fact that the “partners” of PPS are the same people who made the harmless bandshell go away.
(So I don’t know, I’ll consider the Panhandle Park Stewards ranking someplace north of that horribly corrupt Willie Brown S.L.U.G. vehicle for the while. Enjoy your “partnership” with the corrupt RPD, and the NIMBYed-up NoPNA, and the millionaires’ kid’s school as you garden, Deutsches Jungvolk und Bund Deutscher Mädel.)
Anyway, you can look forward to the flashing lights of traffic cams when errant drivers err at Fell and Masonic. (UCSF shuttle van drivers beware, beware!)

[Oh, here we go, it's the Citizen of Tomorrow Awards, just posted.]
Now, the problem I had last night was being too ambitious, thinking I could drop by the First Birthday Celebration of The Bay Citizen and then hustle it uphill to the Specfic Whites neighborhood by nine-ish, thinking that this year’s party would be like last year’s, you know, the one they had in the Twitterloin. That one was off the hook.
Anyway, here it is at the stated 8:00 PM starting time. (A dozen people to park your car, but only one to check you into the place.)
(Why, yes, Terra _is_ 200 feet away from a bridge and two miles away from a tunnel – why do you ask?)

I guess things got going later in the evening. But I’ll tell you, if you skipped the first hour of last year’s soiree, which was off the hook, you would have missed a lot.
The good thing is that The Bay Citizen produced, as designed, a lot of good stuff the past year.

UCSF to Offer Free Skin Cancer Screenings in Chinatown
WHAT: The UCSF Department of Dermatology, in partnership with the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the Chinatown Public Health Clinic, will offer free skin cancer screenings in Chinatown to mark National Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
UCSF faculty and residents will perform the screenings. Translation services will be provided.
Early detection is key to diagnosing potential cases of melanoma. No appointment is necessary and screenings will take approximately 30 minutes.

WHY: Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, with over one million people diagnosed each year. Anyone can develop skin cancer, regardless of their skin color or general health.
- Skin cancer and melanoma account for about 50 percent of all types of cancers diagnosed;
- Skin cancer is one of the more preventable types of cancer;
- More than 90 percent of skin cancer is caused by excessive exposure to the sun;
- One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime;
- Each hour, one person dies from skin cancer;
- Asian American melanoma patients have a greater tendency than Caucasians to have advanced disease at diagnosis.

I’ll tell you, the big Impressionists show over at our de Young Museum is the real deal. It’s a must-see, baby. But it’s leaving us on September 6th, 2010.
So, you need to get over there while you have the chance. Now, if you want to win a free pair of V.I.P. tickets (the kind without a time stamp so you can just show up and walk right in, generally), make a comment to this post telling everyone the name of the de Young’s affinity card that gets you discounts and special offers all over Northern California sometime after noon on Monday, July 26th, 2010. I don’t know, once you get a Great European Museum to agree to send over its stuff while they do a little Spring Cleaning, well that’s pretty much all the heavy lifting you need right there – everything else takes care of itself. So of course you get your scholars working and you need to get cogitating about what goes where and why, but it’s all downhill after that. For whatever reason, we San Franciscans get more than our fair share of these kinds of museum loans.
As here, and now, at our de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. Their awesome new exhibit, Birth of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay, is a smash success already.
