Uh Oh: “Substantially Lower” Prices for Some Tickets for the Exceedingly Unpopular America’s Cup Yacht Match

Crowd estimates for some days of our so-called “Summer of Racing” have gone down more than two orders of magnitude from just last year.

Yes, that means that the estimates are now at less than 1% of  the 500,000 per day that ineffectual San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee was promising  all the way back in 2012.

Here’s the news:

“We have decided to substantially lower our charter prices to benefit spectators who are seeking a unique and thrilling viewing experience of the races from prime positioning on the perimeter of the America’s Cup race course,” said Captain Stephan Sowash.

Of course most people won’t pay a dime to watch this unpopular “gentlemen’s match” It may or may not be broadcast on free TV for a zero or negative(!) broadcast fee. And some tickets have already been refunded (which didn’t cost the Larry Ellison people  too much because how many people in the world would actually pay, really?)

Red Bull Youth America’s Cup features young, talented sailors aged 19 to 24 comprised of six sailors on various national teams. This is an opportunity to see the next America’s Cup generation of competitors.

· Super Yacht Regatta | September 9th, 11th and 13th

Participating in their own regatta, these magnificent super yachts will astonish as they race for the very first time in this inaugural event.

· America’s Cup Finals | September 7th – 20th

That bit from Amy Crawford has this nice quote about Proposition F (2012) from error-prone San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee:

“As insane as this is, it is, in fact, insane,” sputtered the usually mild-mannered Mayor Ed Lee when the initiative was announced.

Now, was it a mistake for San Francisco’s so-called Consensus Mayor to label Prop F (and, indirectly, the supporters of Prop F) as insane?

Yes. It’s not what he meant to say, it’s not what he actually thinks.

Now it certainly would be inconvenient for San Francisco to lose control of Hetch Hetchy, no argument there.

But IRL, it’s not “insane” to think that maybe, just maybe, it’d be a good idea to restore Hetchy Hetchy at some far off point in the future.

Hey, is San Francisco Really a “Sister City” of Paris, France? No – Was It Before? No, Not At All – Here’s Why

Here’s why:

Seule Paris est digne de Rome; seule Rome est digne de Paris. 

Solo Parigi è degna di Roma; solo Roma è degna di Parigi.

Only Paris is worthy of Rome; only Rome is worthy of Paris.

That means that Paris has been “twinned” with Rome in an exclusive sister-city relationship. It’s an “elaborate cultural partnership,” as they say.

So does that mean that Mayor Ed Lie will be lying once again today?

Yep, pretty much.

But you’ve got to realize that things are more or less on autopilot at City Hall these days, so it’s not really his volition.

(And if Willie Brown could get away with something, then Ed Lee should be able to as well, else it’s racist or something.)

Now, here’s what we really have with the City of Light. We have one of these things:

Which in American is “pacts of friendship and cooperation signed by the City of Paris.”

Which, IRL, is rien de bien grave (no biggee). See Below.

IMO, we should be like Dubai, which ID’s itself as a Partner City with Paris.

SAN FRANCISCO – On September 27, 2008, the California Academy of Sciences unveiled the world’s greenest museum—an eco-friendly new home featuring a hilly living roof, recycled denim insulation, and many other green innovations. Three years and more than five million visitors later, the museum celebrates another symbolic color: platinum. Today, the U.S. Green Building Council presented the Academy with its second LEED Platinum award, making the California Academy of Sciences the world’s first “Double Platinum” museum and the world’s largest Double Platinum building. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the Academy building houses an aquarium, planetarium, natural history museum, and world-class research and education programs under one living roof, standing as an embodiment of its 158-year-old mission to explore, explain, and protect the natural world.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system is a voluntary, consensus-based standard for evaluating high-performance, sustainable buildings. By earning points across a variety of sustainability categories, buildings can earn a basic certification, Silver, Gold, or Platinum rating. In October 2008, the Academy received its first LEED Platinum rating under the “New Construction” category, which focused on the building’s design and construction process. In August 2011, the Academy received its second LEED Platinum rating under the “Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance” category, which certifies that its day-to-day operations and business practices also meet the highest standards of sustainability.

The Academy’s operations and maintenance practices were evaluated and earned points across six different categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design process. Based on a wide range of green practices and performance metrics, including transportation, purchasing decisions, and waste disposal, it was awarded a total of 82 points, exceeding the threshold for a Platinum certification (80 points).

Founded in 1853, the California Academy of Sciences is one of the world’s preeminent natural history museums and is an international leader in scientific research about the natural world. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the Academy’s original home in Golden Gate Park, but also provided a silver lining: the opportunity to reinvent the facility from the ground up. After nearly a decade of planning and the largest cultural fundraising effort in San Francisco history, the new Academy opened to the public in 2008. All in the Family, the “City Family” – Even Recology Showed Up at Today’s Run Ed Run Rally at City Hall

Let me tell you, if you ever get a chance to visit Recology at 50 California, well, their offices are fantastic.

And everybody’s so friendly – you’ll have gaggle of attractivas in the their 20′s and 30′s coming up to you to just say hi, just like you’re a rock star or a Nordstrom’s customer or something.

And the party swag, don’t get me started on the party swag.

Anyway, guess who showed up at today’s Run Ed Run rally at City Hall. It’s the melon-farming Recology garbage truck! See?

“In the summer of 1999, Lee, who had been tapped by Brown to head the Department of Public Works in 1996, came under public criticism after proposing a 44 percent rate hike for residential garbage collection. Although the rate was lower than the 52 percent hike proposed by Norcal (as Recology was then known), it was substantially higher than the 20 percent increase recommended by his staff, said Quentin Kopp, a former supervisor and state senator and a retired judge who advocated against the rate hike at the time.”

Gerry Shih, from the campaign trail today: “I’m not anticipating anything at this point,” Lee said with a smile…” And here’s a bon mot from Board of Supervisors President David Chiu:

Chiu continued to allege “unethical” and “possibly illegal” activity by Progress For All. ‘San Franciscans want answers and deserve a full investigation of what happened,’ Chiu said.”

Yowzer.

All right, back to today’s political theatre. Is this the “grass roots?” These people are, quite literally for a few of them, the same people who were bused in for the Save Ed Jew rallies from back in the day:

They were all directed off the sidewalk and up the cattle chute to City Hall by the man in the yellow hat, well, that’s what I call him, anyway, seen here, at camera center, without a hat:

Oh, this van was not actually driven (see comments) by the ringleader, you know, the fellow who told the easily-cowed grandmothers and the misled youth what to do.

After that, it was time to rehearse the scripts…
