Top Cheffer Casey Thompson Stars at Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival 2009

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Here’s the thing about the 14th Annual Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival that just finished up - there’s chocolate everywhere. And what’s nice about it is that there’s no fences or checkpoints or anything. What your $20 gets you is not admission but a cafeteria ticket with 15 checkboxes. So go around and sample what you want. You can get your fill, and if you wanted to, you could go full Augustus Gloop.

It is truly the Land of Chocolate – don’t miss the 15th Annual in 2010 next September.

Famous Chef-testant Casey Thompson lectured on the subject of chocolate waffles or something like that. Look what she has – dark chocolate, the hard stuff:

Here’s how it works – find something that looks appealing and then line up to get a sample. They’ll check your card off and then you can move on. People could spend hours just milling around and noshing and watching the demonstrations, etc…

The whole thing looked exactly like this, from SF Weekly’s Hanna Quevedo.

Best in Show would have to be these colorful Truffle Bars from Sterling Confections. I didn’t actually taste the things, but they look to be packaged well and that’s half the battle when your shopping for a gift, right girlfriend? Sterling can pick up the slack after the recent Joseph Schmidt Confections (“The Soul is For Hire, and They’ve Sold the Heart”) sell out.

Things got a little frenetic when they started throwing gelato containers off the back of the refrigerator truck. It was Brother Against Brother:

The Famous Harvey Milk Kite is Back in Civic Center Airspace

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Now I say famous because, apparently, I’m the last person in town to see this thing. (And actually, I thought it was a Barack Obama kite at first, so oh well.)

Irregardless, it was an arresting sight.

Refurbished Harvey Milk Center for Recreational Arts Open for Business

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

The Harvey Milk Recreational Arts Building at 50 Scott Street in Duboce Park had quite the grand opening kickoff yesterday morning. Read all about it at Linda Post’s SF FYI.NET.

“City Parks general manager Jared Blumenfeld thought the late supervisor Harvey Milk would be very proud of the voter-approved two-year project. ‘It’s got recording studios, it’s got darkrooms. Just beautiful, light spaces, community rooms,’ Blumenfeld said. ‘It’s really architecturally stunning.’”

The American Dream starts with the neighborhoods” - as recorded by Laura Spanjian, Assistant General Manager for External Affairs for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC)

The Castro Theatre and Our Huge Gay Pride Flag – Together at Last

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

These two icons of San Francisco’s Castro District can appear to be close together if you stand in the right place. The Castro Theatre is in great shape and the giant Gay Pride Flag at the corner of Market and Castro looks a lot spiffier these days compared to the past. Check out the history of all those colors here. An older version from the filming of the Sean Penn movie Milk

hot pink: sexuality
red: life
orange: healing
yellow: sunlight
green: nature
turquoise: magic/art
indigo: serenity/harmony
violet: spirit

There’s Only Just One More Week Left for the MILK Run at the Castro Theatre

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Oh noes! The historic run of Milk at the Castro Theatre is about to end. You’ve got just one more week.

What’s nice about the Castro is that it doesn’t give you all those annoying ads, the way they do at the Metreon and such. Maybe that’s why the big screen at this neighborhood theater is the second busiest in the land (coming second only to the one showing Bolt at the El Capitan in L.A.)

The Castro Theatre draped with a gigantic Sean Penn banner, as seen from Twin Peaks. Click to expand:

San Francisco’s Castro Theatre Begins MILK Run Today

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Check the sked – can you see Sean Penn’s face filling up the entire calendar? It’s ALL MILK, ALL THE TIME starting this very moment at the Castro Theatre. Harvey Milk’s story is the talk of the nation today.

The film is highly thought of, with a very high 92% positive score on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatomater.

If you go, you can see all your friends as extras. And the theater itself was practically a co-star:

Got Conspiracy? The Cabal That Keeps Milk Prices High in California

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

So, the state of California won’t allow lower milk prices? Sure seems that way. Here’s how it looked at a San Francisco Lucky Supermarket the other day:

go8f6245a.jpg

The Soviets over at the California Department of Food and Agriculture regulate milk prices? Yes, srsly.

You see, dairy farmers and the state of California like high milk prices. This cabal works together thusly:

California Dairy farmers want state to raise milk prices

Record milk price provides relief for dairies

Read the news and turn the pages:

Dairy Industry Crushed Innovator Who Bested Price-Control System

THE LAND OF MILK AND MONEY:

15-farm empire bucks industry

Not only does Food and Ag play a role in keeping milk prices high, they seem to relish offering excuses for their behaviour.

go8f6247a.jpg

So, by the numbers:

4. Q: Why are milk prices regulated?
A: Another way to ask the same question is, “To what extent is governmental intervention still needed to achieve orderly marketing of dairy products?”

No, the way to ask the question is “why are milk prices regulated?” Or, why are milk prices so damn high? Or, why the hell is there a minimum price on milk? Answer: To please Big Dairy.

Next question:

5. Q: How do California’s milk standards differ from other states?
From the nutritionist’s standpoint, California’s fluid milk standard is healthier

No, the proper answer is “in a trivial fashion.” Why would California have such a minor difference in milk standards? To segment the market in order to please Big Dairy, that’s why.

Next question:

11. Q: How much does it cost to produce a gallon of milk?
Input costs, such as processing labor, delivery and raw product costs vary considerably.

Why on earth should the Kalifornia Kommisars even care about this issue?

milkpriceinspector.jpg

Dairy Division on patrol, looking for illegal sales of low priced milk. (CalTrans made them switch the metal tracks on their tanks to rubber back in ‘82.)

The final outrage:

16. Q: Can outsourcing milk to other states reduce the retail price of milk?

Outsourcing“? Don’t they mean importing? Yes they do, but the word importing has a neutral point of view.

Thankfully, we’ve made it to the bottom of the FAQ page.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture is required to comply with the wishes of the Legislature and the Governor, of course. The mystery is why Food and Ag feels it necessary to defend the wishes of the Legislature and the Governor with this extremely bogus and self-serving FAQ page. The World Wonders.

(And if you like high milk prices, you’re going to love getting sprayed with crop dusters over your house this summer. BAM! Is Gaia acting through Senator Carole Migden to fight against Food and Ag? Signs point to yes.)

Hundreds of San Franciscans at City Hall Today to Help Produce Milk

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

The people at MilkMarch.com issued the call and many responded. Were you gay for a day as they were at Dreamlogic.net?

Milk should be coming soon enough to a theatre near you.
