Ford Motor Company of Dearborn, MI Defines “Living Wages” in SF, CA as Being Just 15% Above the Minimum – $16.13 Per Hour??

And on top of that, Ford Motor Company (NYSEFS&P 100 ComponentS&P 500 Component) is “proud” to pay just $16.13 per hour.

And I’ll do the math for you, Gentle Reader, and I’ll show my “work,” heh:

I think Ford could afFORD to pay about $10 an hour more to each one of its near minimum wage GoBike bike rental workers, especially in high-rent cities such as San Francisco (especially considering all the advertising they’re getting, especially considering how much they jacked up prices from the little-used, low-profile, tax and fee-payer-funded Bay Area Bike Share.)

Alternatively, FoMoCo could stop repeatedly claiming that it’s paying “living wages,” right?

What’s that, FORD is just like Citi in New York, a mere sponsor? Well, not really, as FORD tracks you, the GoBike user, more than Citibank does.  I mean, does Citi track how fast you drive your car the day after you install an app to use a bikeshare rental bike in NYC? IDTS. Like, why would it care? But does FORD?

Hey, QUESTION: Does Michigan-based FoMoCo think that $16.13 per hour really is a “living wage” in our Bay Area in places like Frisco, E-Ville, Oaktown, Berzerkeley, etc? Here’s why I ask:

  1. Fully 90 percent of operations jobs are full time positions, paying at or above living wages…”; and consider that
  2. These gigs pay $16.13 per hour, even in San Francisco, right?

So does that square?

IDK, man. I still see more people sitting on locked up BABS bikes than people actually using them.

And how many millions have we spent on this program?

It’s making some people rich, but not its workers, not at, what, a nominal amount north of min wage?

Do you like bikes? Well, then why don’t we take all this money and simply give bikes away to residents? I mean, you know, as a mental exercise, something to think about. As things stand now, nobody really uses these rides ($9 minimum, ouch, so I’ve never even tried them, plus a nice $1200 charge on your credit card if you lose it, or in the event you have a hassle checking it back in and somebody steals it), but, somehow, this whole deal makes some people happy, and Ford (Motor Company) can get a Super Bowl ad snippet out of it, OK fine.

Bicycle sharing is a sustainable, healthy, and community-based transport option that enhances urban livability and mobility. Bay Area Motivate currently operates 700 bikes & 70 stations in the Bay Area with plans to expand the system — tenfold – with 7000 bikes by the end of 2018.

Overview of Position:
As a Field Team Member, you will play a fundamental role in Bay Area Motivate bike share operations. You will be responsible for maintaining the overall functionality and ride-ability of the Bay Area bike share system. Working under the primary guidance of the Operations Leadership Team, a Field Team Member will assist and support redistribution of bikes, maintain and repair all stations and related equipment, while supporting general bike share operations across the System.

Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Redistribution
▪ Operate a large vehicle or bike train (large tricycle with cart) to redistribute bikes as required, based on real-time demand data
▪ Load/unload vehicles with bikes and dock/undock bikes at stations which requires repetitive motion and individual responsibility for lifting up to 50lbs
▪ Evaluate bike condition, document and record data regarding bikes and related equipment, and escalate if needed
▪ Communicate effectively and efficiently using verbal, written or typed communications with supervisors, managers and support related positions
▪ Partner and work collaboratively with Operations Leadership, fellow employees and related positions to assess, evaluate and determine inventory management and control
▪ Keep and maintain clean and presentable work areas, tools and equipment which may include, but is not limited to, company vehicles and work locations, at all times
▪ Perform bike valet duties including corralling and securing bikes, clearing stations, and helping customers

Station Maintenance, Appearance and Repair
▪ Complete station maintenance in a professional and timely manner consistent with all Bay Area Motivate (BAM) policies and procedures. Report any and all issues or concerns with Station performance to Deputy Operations Manager or designee.
▪ Ensure bike stations are operational which may require reboot of stations, replace station batteries, swap SD cards, and similar responsibilities as necessary
▪ Timely response to all station emergencies or identified issues, include tracking, recording and reporting all work orders

General Responsibilities
▪ Follow safe work practices and help create and maintain a safe work environment
▪ Follow any routes and assignments as delegated by dispatch and maintenance
▪ Communicate professionally and timely with all customers, management, vendors and employees
▪ Escalate issues as needed to Operations Management or designated Bay Area leader
▪ Work with all Motivate employees and team members to ensure timely and productive workflows
▪ Complete valet duties including corralling, securing and distributing bikes as needed
▪ Additional duties and responsibilities as determined by management.

Required Skills and Experience:
▪ Minimum 18 years of age or older.
▪ Valid Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
▪ Demonstrated success meeting and exceeding Bay Area Motivate performance expectations.
▪ Experience operating vehicles in congested city traffic.
▪ Knowledge of Bay Area geography and street layout.
▪ Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other technology as needed to perform the essential functions of the job
▪ Interpersonal skills — open to others’ ideas; patience and willingness to experiment and try new things while working collaboratively.
▪ Dependability and schedule adherence — ability and commitment to working all scheduled work hours. Bay Area Motivate work schedules may include, evenings, weekends and holidays.

I guess this is the SFPD’s version of a Community Service Officer program?

But the pay starts off at $15.99 per hour?

The thing is that the In-&-Out Burger pays more. And didn’t we just vote in a higher minimum wage?

Can you imagine living in the Bay Area with a part-time job what pays $1300-something per month before taxes? Well, if you’re a rich kid living at home, I could see how you could swing that. Or if you had financial aid as a college student. Otherwise, IDK.

San Francisco’s Appointed Mayor Ed Lee Talks About Raising the Minimum Wage, But Election Day Poll Workers Make Less Than That – Why?

All right, c’mon, “Apply to be a Poll Worker!

Attend one training class that will clearly explain Poll Worker duties.”

“All Poll Workers must arrive at the polling place no later than 6:00 a.m. on Election Day. Although the polls officially close at 8:00 p.m., Election Day does not end until all materials have been picked up (usually around 9:00 p.m. or 9:30 p.m.). There will be meal breaks during the day. 

So let’s do the math:

Training in Civic Center before the election: 3 hours or so.

Game Day: 15.5 hours, less breaks = 8 hours straight time and let’s say 6.5 hours of OT at time-and-a-half

So what’s that, 3+8+6.5+3.25 = 20.75 effective hours of work?

Multiplying by the official City and County minimum wage of $10.74 yields $222.86 total pay.

And using the vaunted $15 per hour minimum promised by quasi-governmental spokesperson and noted Berkeleyite Randy Shaw, we arrive at $311.25.

And what is appointed Mayor Ed Lee offering these poor souls? Well apparently no pay at all for the mandatory training, and then:

“Depending on your assignment, Poll Workers are paid between $142 and $195  for working on Election Day.”

Is this a joke, you ask?

No, Gentle Reader, it’s not. They’re srsly.

I cry foul.

In any event, if you’re an inspector you can make  a bit more, but then you gotta deal with high school seniors with their Katy Perry and cell phones and whathaveyou. They’re intelligent, you know, but lazy. And if their work doesn’t add up the way it should shortly after 8 PM, well that’s tough cookies – you’ll hear the beep beeps from the waiting cars and then the kids are gone and you, the vaunted elections inspector, will be left to fix things up.

Anyway, you get something like this for your troubles …

…but you won’t get minimum wage.

Now why is that?

Here’s the problem, a lot of the people who were behind the effort to lift SFGov lifer Ed Lee into the office of Mayor DO NOT WANT a $15 minimum wage in San Francisco County.

They’re all HOW ABOUT NO:

OTOH, Edly wants to stay popular so he needs to accommodate recent changes in popular opinion about stuff like waterfront heights limits and increasing housing costs.

How about this, how about a $15 minimum wage that kicks in in about a half-decade from now? In the meantime, we’ll just phase it in year by year. This way former housing activist Ed Lee can display “leadership” without alienating his base too much. At that point, Edly will have termed out and this issue will be Someone Else’s Problem (SEP).

It’s a beautiful plan, man.

It’s the actual plan, man.

You’ll see.

San Francisco Requires Employers to Pay Minimum Wage and Overtime But It It Itself Doesn’t Pay Election Workers Minimum Wage

Yeah, I’m thinking that what our Department of Elections pays workers on election day is enough for about 11.5 hours, considering San Francisco’s $10.55 minimum wage and CA’s overtime laws. And yet workers need to labor something like 15 hours on Election Day.

I cry foul.

SAN FRANCISCO, September 25, 2013 – The Department of Elections is currently seeking poll workers for the upcoming November 5 Municipal Election.

It takes more than 2,500 poll workers to conduct an election. Poll workers operate polling places on Election Day and assist voters in many parts of the voting process. Some poll workers have volunteered during every election for decades. Poll workers include high school students learning on-the-job civics lessons, retirees, and hundreds of people who take a day off from their regular lives to be of service to San Francisco voters.

Poll workers attend a training class prior to the election, in which all duties are explained in detail. Lead poll workers must also pick up materials before Election Day and transport them to their assigned polling place on the morning of the election.

Applicants must be United States citizens, age 18 or older, and registered to vote in California. All positions are one-day assignments and pay between $132- $190.

Individuals interested in serving as poll workers must apply in person at the Poll Worker Hiring Office, which is open every Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. starting on September 27 and is located at the Department of Elections at City Hall.
