You knew that something big was going in Japantown when you saw this big sign go up last week – lots of people worked late into the night to make sure Saturday’s opening of the glassy “NEW PEOPLE” centre went off without a hitch.

And here’s the result Saturday morning, via the ubiquitous Steve Rhodes, who, like Visa, is Everywhere You Want To Be:

And, bonus, J-Town hosted a J-POP Summit to celebrate the building’s opening. Hello Kitty, Harajuku Girls, etc. in the house:

Not sure what the Yelpers have a problem with, but the Haight Ashbury Street Fair went off today without a hitch, just like last year.
Look at the swirling mass of humanity on just one block of Haight Street:

Can you see the superfluity of nuns in white approaching the Fair? Also note the F430 Ferrari supercar (sans license plates), one of many exoticars that made the journey to the Upper Haight today. Also note the sign: “No Open Containers of Alcohol.” Too bad.

Of course, all you need to get around the alcohol ban is a gallon jug of overproofed white rum and a giveaway “water” bottle. As seen on Ashbury.

District Five Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi was on the scene, gathering names for his newsletter distribution list.

Poorbot was looking for handouts:

“SHOW US YOUR BOOBS… please.” “FABULOUS PRIZES.” “DON’T WORRY (WE’RE GAY)” These inebriates residing above the Ben & Jerry’s at the corner of Ashbury were true to their word, tossing down trinkets to all flashers male and female.

You kmow why this San Francisco Native baby is better than you? Cause he had the foresight to be born in San Francisco, that’s why. He won the lottery/ when he was born.

Bong Hits 4 Jesus

The way you can tell that Anschutz ING really, really, really, really, really wants you to register for Bay to Breakers 2009 is to count how many circulars show up in your mailbox on just one day. You know, those glossy ones that hammer you about the registration deadline extension? Take a look, below.
That’s right, you can get the “early discount” all the way ’til the end of the month, April 30th. Hooray!
You’d think that one flyer for each address they’re targetting would be the maximum, but you’d be wrong. The letter carrier must have been delighted to place five identical ads into my mailbox one recent morn:

More, more, I say! Hang those who talk of less.
(Is this how they do things in tiny burgs of Colorado, like Pine, CO for example? The World Wonders… That’s right - I can see you, Smithers. Say “hi” to Phil!)
And now, let’s get a B2B update from Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi:
Bay to Breakers Update
“On Monday April 6th, the Board of Supervisors City Operations and Neighborhood Services Committee held a hearing to review plans for the Bay to Breakers race. We were pleased to hear that the race sponsors have added a number of additional portable toilets in response to pressure from our office.
However, we were disappointed that they have not implemented a number of our other suggestions, including:
- Providing portable toilets on Hayes between Octavia and Steiner
- Providing toilets on Divisadero and increasing the number of toilets on Fell
- Using large capacity, six-man urinal portable toilets.
- Creating an alternate registration system for non-serious racers to generate more revenue to cover additional costs.
- Creating an event at Speedway Meadow to draw the crowds out of the Panhandle and Alamo Square areas into Golden Gate Park. This would lessen the impact on the neighborhood, and create a centralized location for trash pickup and Muni service to get people home after the event.
Community groups are exploring the possibility of creating their own event at Speedway Meadow, and we plan to work with them to see if this is feasible.
Details on the rules for the race can be found on baytobreakers.com. Floats will be allowed if they start at the beginning of the race in a designated area. No kegs or glass bottles will be allowed.”
See you there!

Here was the scene in Japantown today at the Nichi Bei Times Tofu Dessert Competition and Festival. This well-attended event was a benefit for Nihonmachi Little Friends, a local Japanese bilingual and multicultural childcare agency.
NBC Bay Area anchor Mike Inouye just after he mentioned San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi‘s habit of ”always looking stunning.” Next to them are fellow judges Chef Libby Oda, House Foods Marketing Supervisor Yoko Difrancia, Daniel Alafetich of Hodo Soy Beanery, and Cathy Inamasu, Executive Director of Nihonmatchi Little Friends. This was the scene tonight at St. Mary’s Hospital in the Western NOPA – it was another District 5 debate featuring Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi and challengers Rob Anderson and Owen O’Donnell.

Let’s hear what they have to say. You already know Ross, here is Owen and here is Rob, who runs the District 5 Diary website.
The mise-en-scene, about 40 people made it to the end:

May the best man win.
In other District 5 news, the Panhandle Bandshell is wowing them in Europe. Godspeed, little bandshell. Come back real soon, ya hear?

First, get up to speed on this issue here. The latest is this – San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi is fully engaged on the question of whether the Nihonmachi Street Festival should be allowed to continue next year. And guess what? He’s in favor of festivals. Ross believes there’s room for accomodation and compromise on this issue. Quite a reasonable approach, actually
Ross Mirkarimi in dialogue with the Japantown community on Post Street yesterday.

It appeared the residents of 1600 Webster had full access to their parking spaces during the entire festival. We’ll have to wait and see how dirty Post Street is today.
To be continued….

So far this year, the big news regarding the traffic situation on Masonic Avenue is a reduction in the speed limit to a maximum of 25 MPH.
Mission Accomplished?
One of this morning’s accidents on Masonic:

It seems there’s still room for improvement on this street.
Now back in the day, there were plans for a Panhandle Freeway(!), so it’s not like some traffic czar organized the streets in this area in a coherent fashion. We have what, we have by “accident,” mas o menos.
Is it too late for wholesale changes to the way Masonic is laid out?

The California Department of Food and Agriculture called it quits today on the issue of spraying for the Light Brown Apple Moth. All of a sudden like.

The family that Stops the Spray together, stays together (or something like that).
This should be gratifying to Senator Carole Migden, who thinks, “Bay Area residents ought not to serve as guinea pigs and have their health jeopardized for an ill-conceived program and an unproven approach.”
The same with San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who says he’s, “glad CDFA appears to have accepted the inevitable.”
So after all these months, that is that.

The bandwagon opposing aerial spraying for light brown apple moth eradication is gaining momentum.
Last night, San Francisco Supervisors Carmen Chu, Gerardo Sandoval, and Ross Mirkarimi, along with scientists, physicians and organic farmers, all addressed a standing-room-only crowd of hundreds at the Hall of Flowers in Strybing Arboretum.
Senator Carole Migden praises the efforts of the assembled experts.
In related news, the “twist-tie” approach is under new scrutiny in San Mateo County.
On it goes. Per the Chronicle:
On Saturday, Stop the Spray Marin is holding a march and rally from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the southwest end of the Corte Madera Town Center. More information about the events is at www.sfspraytownhall.org and www.stopthespraymarin.org.
It’s hard to imagine light aircraft buzzing the city with spray canisters firing after seeing all this agitation, but who knows…
