See? Sashes Don’t Lie.
Believe it or not, she’s a natural blonde (so of course she dies her hair ginger, natch). More photos here and oh, SFGate is going wall-to-wall with 30 photos.

She’s been running for Miss New Jersey-something for years, and only now does she come to California?
I cry foul.
But she’s up-to-speed on California-style marijuana legalization already:
“Well, I understand why that question would be asked, especially with today’s economy, but I also understand that medical marijuana is very important to help those who need it medically,” she replied. “I’m not sure if it should be legalized, if it would really affect, with the drug war,” she added. “I mean, it’s abused today, unfortunately, so that’s the only reason why I would kind of be a little bit against it, but medically it’s OK.”
All right, next stop, Miss Universe 2012.
Welcome to California, Alyssa Campanella.

(My Canon 1D Mark Whatever SLR died an early death at 140,000 clicks* possibly due to the fact that I wasn’t ascared of a little (or a lot) of rain. Nowadays I’m def. skittish, but no matter,) you can always count on famous photographer David Yu to be on the scene rain or dry.
As he was last Saturday night in Chinatown and North Beach and SoMA and the Financh and all over.
Check out his gallery of Year of the Rabbit festivities, why not?
Bunnies!

Whoahhh Bundy!

SuperLotto? No thanks! But SuperLotto PLUS? Sounds intriguing…

And look who else was there – it’s your newly-minted Supervisor Malia Cohen:

(Yowser)
And your just-as-newly-minted Mayor Edwin Lee in the official San Francisco staff car, formerly used by General Burkhalter:

See you next year! (In scary, scary 2012, the year of the Dragon.)
*200,000 was the expected number of clicks I believe I was owed. ($300 minimum for a new shutter.) OTOH, my 5D Mark I has probably already exceeded its expected shutter life so I s’pose I shouldn’t complain too much. Living on borrowed time tho.

Of course famous photographer David Yu was on the scene when June Quan was crowned Miss Chinatown USA for 2011.
The Coronation Ball is tonight, see below, and, of course, the big parade is tomorrow night.
(Don’t even take along a brolly to the parade – you’ll stay dry this year, most likely, Gaia willing…) [UPDATE: The Internet MIC just came by my house and tore up my prognosticator license. From now on, I'll leave this kind of stuff to the experts.]

From David Yu
Bon Courage to June Quan and all the participants.

Photographer David Yu took his gear up to the Palace of Fine Arts yesterday to capture the 25th Annual Miss Asian America Pageant. Can you see all the color in his set?
And here’s a first-hand report from Rose Chung‘s extravaganza:
“Everyone was super gorgeous. There were plenty of attractive young women, and a surprising amount of attractive young men. Everywhere I looked it was like eyecandy overload. I was very happy. Very very happy.”
O.K. then. Here’s part of David Yu’s gallery:

Here’s the thing – Vietnam ranks pretty low on the list of places you generally need to worry about. Of course they’ve sent people to California to spy on us, but so has our good buddy Russia and a host of others and I’m sure America has spies over there in Hanoi as well, and S,S,S,S,Saigon too, or whatever they’re calling it these days. Fine.
But here’s a minor beef. Seems that a big .vn website, one with traffic greater than SFgate.com anyway, has no qualms about reposting a bunch of photos from Flickr after stripping copyright info.
Thusly. That’s not fair use, Dan Tri. You know, all that bay arean David Yu wants to do is add color to our lives, so it’s bad form to piss him off, right?
A typical kind of shot from DavidYuWeb:

Used with persimmon.
Should we expect more from huge profitable MSM websites operating out of our sister city?
Mmmmm….

How many photos do you think our San Francisco Chronicle / SFGate (San Francisco’s Online Newspaper) recently devoted to the topic of Miss Universe Australia 2010? Well, take a look here at 21(!) high heels ‘n bikini-type shots.
Here’s the bulk of the copy:
“The 30 women were judged across three sections: evening-wear, question-and-answer and, of course, swimwear.”
Swimwear, “of course!” Of 19 action verbs in the captions, “parade(s)” led the pack – it was used 17 times. Throw in a “poses” and a “strikes a pose” and then all’s that left to do is wait for the Pulitzer Committee to call with instructions for the awards ceremony.
Let’s round things out and give you an even two dozen. The mise-en-scene, down under:

Oh no, high voltage electronics and hot tubs don’t mix, ladies:

And plunging necklines, as expected, sort of:

What should we expect next – 75 shots from Miss Universe Upper Volta 2010? Something like that.
What has SFGate become, the Huffington Post?

This was the scene last night at the Palace of Fine Arts, where Stanfurd freshman and bay area local Crystal Lee was crowned Miss Chinatown USA 2010. It’s international news.
All the pageantry was caught by David Yu of davidyuweb. He always has great photos of whatever’s going on the bay area.
The crowning the School of the Arts alum:

Here’s the scene this morning in the outer Outer Sunset District / Parkside area of San Francisco – it’s Congresswoman Jackie Speier at her Town Hall Meeting. Here’s the news – as far as the replacement for departing United States Supreme Court Justice David Souter is concerned, Jackie has “no doubt it’s going to be a woman.“
And who might that woman be? How about Miss San Carlos (San Mateo County) 1977 and current rust belt governor Jennifer Mulhern Granholm? She went to Cal and then Harvard Law and she’s the Democrat Sarah Palin - how’s them apples? Jackie helpfully points out that Ms. Granholm would be the first [actually second, see comments] naturalized citizen to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. We’ll see.

Look below to see what Representative Speier has been up to the past year.

Well just like last year, this year’s San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade went off without a hitch. Who was there? Congresswoman Jackie Speier, Senator Leland Yee, Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, newly-installed President of the Board of Supervisors David Chiu, Supervisor Eric Mar, Police Chief Heather Fong and a host of others.
What did Chinatown look like last night? Check out David Yu’s photos right here and you’ll also get to see what last week’s Miss Chinatown USA Pageant 2009, an event that included participants Amy Chu and Angela Chu and winner Cindy Wu, looked like as well.

Well it’s still there on the 2008 Italian Heritage Parade website:
“We’re pleased to announce, the 2008 Parade Grand Marshal will be Tommy Lasorda!”
But alas, it was not to be. The whole thing is ably explained by North Beach Examiner Tony Long here and here. Perhaps Tommy will be invited back next year?
Now, on with the show. It’s called Columbus Day, or Indigenous People’s Day, or Italian Heritage Day, or Día de la Raza, or Discovery Day or even Día de la Resistencia Indígena. Take your pick.
Popular San Francisco Supervisor and soon-to-be Assembly Member Tom Ammiano. Click to expand:

Ivy League lawyer / U.C. Berkeley-grad Gerardo Sandoval hot on the campaign to become a judge, despite the hostility displayed by the local Establishment, which feels offended by the very idea of an election. Oh well.

Supervisor Ross “the Boss” Mirkarimi:

Miss San Francisco 2008 Reny Lupo:

Of course, Birra Peroni was nella casa:

As was the Boudin Bakery alligator wrestler. That’s real bread, people.

What’s this? Hundreds of Falun Gong! They looked to be the largest entry in the parade by far.

Hey look, it’s the wholly unrelated New Tang Dynasty Televsion (NTDTV):

O.K., here we are, back to the parade:

So that’s it.
Here’s to you, Tommy Lasorda/ Our county turns it lonely eyes to you…
See you next year?
