Shouldn’t Every Parking Lot in San Francisco Have Car Elevators?

Friday, September 5th, 2008

This private parking lot near off Mission near Duboce has lifts that will carry your car as high as an elephant’s eye in order to let another driver park beneath. Aren’t they beautiful?

We need these things everywhere. Here’s a place in town that could use a few lifts, right?

But once you start lifting cars, it’s hard to stop. How high can you stack them?

The Unexpected Houseboats of San Francisco’s Mission Creek

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

North of Mission Bay and South of Market is where you’ll find the houseboats of Mission Creek.

You can look at them and ponder their future while exploring the new Mission Creek Park. The residents here have a lot to adjust to what with all the new visitors, and the new condo buildings, and the new UCSF Mission Bay complex.

San Francisco NIMBYs Set Their Sites on Dolores Park

Monday, August 4th, 2008

(Or “set their sights,” it works either way.) Some feel there’s a big dilemma over San Francisco’s Dolores Park, but really now, you NIMBYs, what were you thinking when you moved in there?

Please consider the silent majority, 419 of whom whom give DP a five star rating. And don’t get the impression that only a park ranger can do something about crime. If you see a real crime going on, the SFPD is prepared to head on in there and deal with it - you don’t have to wait for a Ranger to show up.

If you want to be a help, try to deal with specific issues as opposed to sounding like you’re upset at people enjoying themselves.

Another dreaded sunny day at Parque de Dolores. The horror:

Here’s Your Problem: Your Car Doesn’t Have a Snorkel

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

You might think that because you live in San Francisco, you don’t need a four foot long plastic snorkel on your vehicle. But an urban snorkel mounted on the side of your Jeep would just look so boss, wouldn’t it? Plus, you can save on bridge tolls.

This Jeep, spotted in the Richmond, is from Hermanos Albera in the Mission - ask and maybe they’ll install one for you?

Local Pornographers Help San Francisco Celebrate Bastille Day

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Well it’s July 14, so it must be time for another Bastille Day in San Francisco. Peter Acworth’s Kink.com famously makes pornography at the old San Francisco National Guard Armory and Arsenal down in the Mission district, but they’re never too busy to let a holiday go by without hoisting some huge flags for the occasion.

And anyway, efforts like this might serve to tamp down some of the criticism from the neighbours.

Get over to Belden Alley in the Financial District (”the financh”) sometime today to get in on the fun.

Wonderful Spork Restaurant on Valencia is Highly Amusing

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Spork restaurant at 1058 Valencia near 21st in the Mission was new last year, but there have been some changes since then so let’s take a look, why not.

PAUL REIDINGER over at the Bay Guardian did an excellent job with his review - check here. Now you’re on the trolley.

Zagat Online has some photos, but their sample menu seems a tad out of date. (This menu here is au courant) Find out if Zagat’s “SporkLover” likes Spork by clicking here. Surprised?

You’ll see the dishes after the jump. Everything was uniformly good and they have a nice beer menu, but some people think the prices might be a bit on the high side.

Regardless, you owe it to yourself to check out this refurbished KFC at least once. It’s highly amusing.

Photos of the food, yes food porn, after the jump.

Pee-Wee Herman’s Bike Rides Again, Stripped Down on Valencia Street

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

Pee-Wee Herman’s rather baroque red bicycle, stripped down to its essence, would look something like this Schwinn beach cruiser avec springer fork seen on Valencia. Click to expand:

Whitewalls, gratuitous spokes, kickstand and chrome, chrome, chrome.

That’s quite a look.

The Beverly Hills Chihuahua Visits San Francisco?

Monday, June 30th, 2008

It sure looks that way. But this is a shot of Chewie during the recent Carnaval in the Mission district of San Francisco.

And say hello to his little friend: the stuffed animal version of Gidget, that Taco Bell Chihuahua.

This will be the summer of the chihuahua, as Disney’s Beverley Hills Chihuahua is coming soon. Brace yourself.

San Francisco Dyke March 2008 a Huge Success

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

The San Francisco Dyke March had a huge turnout yesterday, as per usual. This was the scene as the crowd headed to Dolores Park in the Mission district, where every girl cried for one reason or another, per TonyClick to enlarge:

Much-discussed this year was the case of Venice Brown, Terrain Dandridge, Patreese Johnson, Renata Hill and Dwayne Buckle.

A full account of the 2008 Dyke Festival and Parade is here. See you next year.

Is Pasta Roni/Rice-a-Roni the King of Slack Fill?

Friday, June 27th, 2008

So here’s what you get when you throw down for Parmesan Cheese Pasta Roni. After you take out the all-important but pretty small natural flavoring packet, you’re left with what you see below. Is this what they call “slack fill,” or “the difference between the actual capacity of a container and the volume of product contained therein“?

 You make the call.

California Business And Professions Code BPC Section 12606 has a few things to say about these matters.

If somebody looked into this situation, could that lead to what they call a nuisance lawsuit? We’ll just have to wonder about that.

Imagine what the “Roni” people or the folks at Quaker, a unit of PepsiCo Beverages & Foods, would have to say about this.

Things can get a little complicated when you’re packing up the angel hair. Life was so much simpler back in the day, when the DeDomenico family started up the San Francisco Treat down in the Mission.

Anyway, couldn’t these pasta boxes be a little smaller?
