Friday, September 8th, 2017

These steps were fenced off for a couple months over the summer – here’s what it looks like now:

Things get expensive and complicated what with sacrificial anti-graffiti coatings and whatnot.

Real estate interests in the area thought they had a solution by proposing a big-ass fence to keep the hippies off of the steps, and I’m srsly…

…this was a real proposal and this image was the mock-up they created, but the fence idea didn’t fly.

Here it is, at its newish perch on Fulton. Note its placement right next to City Hall, the highest classical dome in the Western Hemisphere.*

And here’s the plaque installed in 1995 what was supposed to Fix Everything. Note how it ends on an optimistic note:

IDK, man. I don’t care what you do with this giant monument, just get it out of here, fine with me.

Here’s a recap of the controversy from the Gray Lady, from two decades back.

Nothing’s changed here lately, of course.

And it was a heavy lift to move this monster a few dozen yards, so it won’t be cheap finishing the job, I’m afraid.

All the deets:

*What’s that, you can think of one higher than our City Hall? Well, maybe, but it aint:

1. Higher (Our U.S. Capitol Building is a tad shorter); and/or
2. Classical (San Jose City Hall has a dome, but it aint classical, the same with the Astrodome etc.); and/or
3. In the Western Hemisphere (Europe has us beat by a mile, I’ll give you that)

Annual membership MWNP / MWNM is just $40 (which gets four in at any time for a whole year), but I shan’t renew as the feds are fed up with all the people here, so a privately-operated for-profit parking system is a-coming. (I wasn’t aware that it was so bad to park next to the creek.) Anywho, there are a lot of ways to get in an around Muir Woods without getting in a traffic jam, waiting for parking, or, far that matter, paying any fees at all.

Basically, the toll gate at the main entrance is only for inbound travelers and there are a lot of other entrances.

Anyway, they want fewer people/tourists milling about the main entrance / gift shop, and that’s what they’ll get. I’ll see you all as I exit through the gift shop.
