In between downpours yesterday, made it over to the Asian Art Museum where they were getting ready for Orchids: A Tribute to Doris Duke, starting today and running through Sunday, October 25, 2009.
Turns out that Doris Duke was heavy into orchids, she was “collector, cultivator, and preservationist” all in one. Plus, some of her pieces will be on display in the Emerald Cities: Arts of Siam & Burma, the new exhibit starting this Friday, October 23rd. So why not turn the AAM into a mini Conservatory of Flowers for a little while, huh?

“Orchids (Orchidaceae) are flowering plants commonly found in Southeast Asia and other tropical parts of the world. This is a botanic description of orchids, but for most of us orchids are the most exotic of plants with an enormous diversity of shape, size, color. Doris Duke, who collected many of the artworks presented in Emerald Cities: Arts of Siam and Burma, was an avid orchid collector, cultivator, and preservationist. As an homage to Doris Duke and her passion for collecting, for the first time and for five days only, the museum will present a striking display of orchids. The display features arrangements by members of Ikebana International and Ikebana Teachers Federation, San Francisco Orchid Society, San Francisco Garden Club, Asian Art Museum Flower Committee, de Young Flower Committee; floral designers, orchid aficionados, and others.”
See you there!

Well, actually Jer-bear’s journey today took him to San Francisco’s leafy Woodland Avenue, home of both Jane Morrison and Agar Jaicks - it’s perhaps it’s a half-mile from Gavin Newsom’s new place on Masonic. So it’s kind of his backyard. Read all about the affair in this glowing report from Bill Wilson at the San Francisco Sentinel - was former Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin there? Take a look to see.
And look who else was there – it’s Robert Haaland and his union allies. You know, the very same Robert that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newson “hates” (reportedly). For the record, Mr. Haaland had this bon mot:
“Jerry Brown wrote the book that Gavin Newsom needs CliffsNotes to understand.”
(Or “needs CLiffNotes to read,” something like that – there might have been different endings. The book in this context would probably be entitled Governance or some such thing – people were talking about Jerry’s forward-looking high speed rail proposals from three decades ago, stuff like that.)
Ouch.

11:30 to 2 p.m.
Where: Woodland Avenue, San Francisco
What: Visit with California Attorney General Jerry Brown while having traditional Sunday brunch. California Attorney General Jerry Brown has not officially declared his candidacy for Governor in 2010. Join Agar Jaicks and Jane Morrison in the growing movement urging Jerry Brown once again to lead California toward a brighter future. Jerry has been in the forefront for decades of what is now known as 21st Century programs, thinking and actions: Sustainable energy. Reducing greenhouse gases. High speed rail. Wild river and coast protection. Resolving global conflict. Support for better education opportunities in public schools. Women and minorities sharing leadership at all government levels. Expanded apprenticeship programs. Attorney General Brown’s much-admired intelligence, humor and experience make him the ideal candidate for Governor.

As expected, there was a great turnout for the 42nd Annual Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown today. Sunny skies and the Grand Parade made today the busiest of the four-day festival. Let’s take a look at the staging area this morning.
Its Grand Marshall George Takei! Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu (born in San Francisco) is seen here hanging out with Heidi Cheung, Miss San Francisco’s Outstanding Teen 2009 and Crystal Lee, Miss California’s Outstanding Teen 2008.

Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Northern California President and Mrs. Masaaki Tanaka, Ambassador of Japan to the United States of America, H.E. Ambassador and Mrs. Ichiro Fujisajki, George Takei, and Consul General of Japan and Mrs. Yasumasa Nagamine:

Richard Hashimoto, President of the Japantown Merchants Association:

Thought this was an electric Tesla Roadster at first. Actually, it’s the similar (but lighter) gas-powered Lotus Elise. (Horrible Tesla Motors is long on promises, certainly, but just because a toy car is expensive and is powered by electricity, that doesn’t mean it’s a desirable product, that doesn’t mean it represents “the high end.” Just ask Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who ended up giving his Tesla Roadster back. Go ahead and buy one if you want, though. While you’re at it, why not buy an impractical electric Ultra Motor A2B bike and an impractical electric Segway Scooter as well.)

Speaking of cars, here’s part of the NUMMI contingent all the way from Fremont. It’s the only car factory in the West that’s still operating. Union labor, FYI

Nihonmachi Little Friends:

And your reward for making it all the way to J-Town? Yummy chicken and rice balls from O-Izakaya Lounge at 1625 Post Street.

See you next year!
