CCSF student Gloria Dean has a question for the SFMTAMUNIDPTSFBC:
“I would like to know the reasons why the Muni constantly stops trains on the T-Line at 23rd Street as if the rest of Third Street doesn’t exist.
“To see elderly women, men and children waiting over an hour for a train to get home is some of the worse treatment of citizens I’ve ever seen from a transportation system. I’ve traveled extensively all over the country as well as the world and I’ve only lived in this area for one year. However, this is obviously a classic combination of classism and racism being displayed, and it is truly a SHAME!
“I’ve decided to take my car out of the parking garage and drive. I refuse to be treated as a second class citizen. I deserve more and so do all the residents of Bayview. Last check, San Francisco doesn’t end at 23rd Street.”
Well I know the answer – it has to do with the district election system for the Board of Supervisors, and also the SFMTA’s general incompetence.
Now the Supervisor for our Bayview Hunters Point area asked about this sitch and the answer was that the T-Third zipped along at a speedy 9 MPH or something, so a T-Third Express wasn’t really needed.
Hey, here’s a jobs program. Why not tear out the T-Third and bring back the buses? Just asking. I mean the T-Third takes up a lot of space, right? Why doesn’t MUNI use it more?
Now speaking of the N Judah Express, here it is, in action, or lack thereof:

Is that four buses sitting around on Sansome Street during rush hour? The drivers are just starting work and it’s time for a 40 minute lunch break? All right.
And here’s another on Bush, just idling away.

Actually, even when the N Judah Express band-aid operation is operational during our rush hours, the buses are totally empty, no passengers, most of the time.
Oh well.

So these new Nx Judah Express Buses are “wrapped,” right? That means that they generally just sit around waiting to function in one direction during the morning drive and the other in the evening.
So, does the Nx Judah Express concept make sense?
Well, sure, you say, cause it gets you from the outer reaches of the West Bay, way out in the Outset, in San Francisco Adjacent, all the way into San Francisco Proper faster than the regular N Judah.
Yeah, but does it make sense?
Why don’t we have a Tx Third Street Express as well? Cause isn’t the newish T-Third line as fucked up as the N-Judah?

And the only reason why MUNI doesn’t charge you Outsetters three or four or five dollars a trip is because the SFMTA tried doing that before and failed in that attempt. But, rest assured, raising the price of express buses is on their list of things to do.
Anyway, consider the Nx Judah Express a kind tangible gift to Supervisor Carmen Chu.
Mira, mira, Carmen! Look what we’re doing for you! Aren’t we the best transit agency in the City and County of San Francisco!
Is this what they call Transit Justice?

Here’s what you can’t do with your aircraft’s tail number. What you can’t do is get all creative to the point where people can’t read it.
‘Cause when you go flat-hatting over San Francisco’s Ferry Building in your aging Piper PA-34-200T Seneca II, you need to have your license plate legible for tout le monde to see. That’s how the system works.
What you can’t do is take away the middle part of the ID numbers leaving all the 0′s, 3′s, 6′s, and 8′s looking alike. That don’t fly.
The turbocharged Piper Seneca II, for the times when your Saratoga can’t get you there fast enough:

Anyway, people need to know who pilots are for the times they land on the wrong end of the runway ‘n stuff.
D’accord? Oui, d’accord.

Yesterday’s announcement of a sinkhole affecting N-Judah service in the Sunset District didn’t sound like any big deal at first:
“Feb 5, 2010 to Feb 7, 2010 - SF Muni N-Judah Line Delay: On Saturday, February 6, SF Muni reports delays on the inbound N-Judah Line at Judah and 29th Avenue due to a street closure involving a sinkhole near the inbound tracks. N trains are turning back at Judah and 19th Avenue and bus shuttles are being provided until further notice.”
And, in fact, the actual sinkhole location itself looks unremarkable, excepting for all the signs all around it.

But check it – appears as if work crews might be spending the next two weeks onsite at 29th and Judah:

”WE WILL TOW,” says MUNI. No doubt.
People riding the N Judah buses this AM seemed relatively unaffected* by the loss of the trolleys, but that probably won’t be the case on Monday if the tracks aren’t usable.
Or, maybe, the City’s taciturn work crews will be able to get a quick fix in this weekend and then work on a better job over the next week or so? Perhaps there’s an ongoing issue there anyway and this whole deal is a big nothingburger with a side order of nada?
MUNI probably has a pretty good idea on what will occur but they aren’t officially saying anything yet.
Only Time Will Tell.
Le mise-en-scene ce matin:

An avid radio fan, call-sign Star Scream (srsly, perhaps ironically), hepped me to when the supervisors would show up this AM, and lo, he was spot-on. (Radio – it’s like the Internet but without pictures.)
Note the cracks nearby the purported sinkhole…

…and then compare them with these nearby bits (could we call them railroad ties?) that appear to be waiting to go:

Good luck, MUNI!
[UPDATE: If you believe what Next MUNI is saying, then the trolleys will be rolling across the sinkhole spot by this afternoon, February 7th.]
*So people trying to get to MUNI’s Town Hall Meeting today (maybe it’s still going on) should be able to make it. MUNI likes these kinds of meetings because they disunite riders (because of infighting over the preservation of service on particular lines) and they unite the disparate elements of MUNI. (Is the state of California really “taking away” money from MUNI or just not giving as much money to MUNI?) Regardless, if enough people hammer on the importance of one particular line, that can make a difference…

When the workhorse N Judah streetcar line is out of service, MUNI tends to throw whatever rolling stock it has onto the route and just hopes for the best. The resulting parade of packed buses of all types going up Cole Street attests to the strain on the system.
As here, last weekend, when things were a bit messy at Church and Duboce. All aboard for Carl and Cole and points Beyond. Stabbing westward::

This could be the issue – the SFPUC is digging up famous Duboce and Steiner, where New York Times reporters conduct traffic studies and, shortly after, luxo SUV drivers get tickets.
