Oakland Warriors Pay $25K to Plant Their Logo in Golden Gate Park – See It Starting Sept 10th

Tuesday, September 6th, 2016

[UPDATE: Will the new logo be for the Warriors, like this recent effort, or will Centre Court feature something called the “Good Tidings Foundation,” located, oddly, down in the Peninsula. It all has to do with the all-important “donor recognition plan” and the “donor recognition court markings.” Note that there is “no known opposition” to all these square yards of blue paint, mostly ’cause most people don’t know about it yet. Mostly. Oh, and if you wanted local support for your corporate logos from people in the Haight Ashbury area, you’d be better off calling your nonprofit the Good Wiccan Foundation, and I’m srsly. Merry part.]

Here’s how things looked last month, August 2016, at the Golden Gate Park Panhandle Basketball Courts:

And here’s how things looked in late August – new blacktop and new blackboards, about what I expected:

IMG_0722-copy

But oh ho, now it’s all like this – an ocean of blue.

7J7C1448 copy

Warriors Blue:

7J7C1453 copy

Specifically Warriors Royal Blue (#006BB6; RGB: 0,107,182) and Golden Yellow (#FDB927; RGB: 237,23,76).

IDK, man, isn’t that a bit much?

And look, here’s what’s coming – a GSW roundel in the middle. Like this:

Capturefghfghtt copy

Like what the troubled Brown, Jr., Willie Middle School has, somewhat controversially.

I’ll tell you a story.

Just south of the (formerly) blacktop courts of the Panhandle…

Capturedfsdf copy

…lies the Panhandle Playground. It looks like this:

7J7C1449 copy

It’s a Kid’s Kingdom, just like many other playgrounds in America. General Motors paid for it back in the 1990’s. But of course now you can’t see who paid for it because Area Residents chipped away at the dedication plaque until it became illegible. It used to say, “WELCOME TO KID’S KINGDOM – DONATED BY YOUR LOCAL SATURN DEALER.”

See what I mean here? This sign was pretty subtle compared with what the Oakland Warriors have in store for us.

How big will the logo be? IDK, exactly. But will it be the largest corporate logo in Golden Gate Park? We’ll see.

Oh what’s that? All this is for Nate Thurmond who just passed on? Well yeah, but it already was for Nate. See?

7J7C1457 copy

This pedestal has been here since the year 2000:

7J7C1463 copy

Somehow, we managed to honor Nate without a sea of blue paint.

Here’s the agreement itself, if case you want to paint GGP in your own corporate colors.

“…a grant-in-place, valued at approximately $25,000 to perform maintenance and repairs to the Courts (the “Grant”) including, without limitation:  Resurfacing the courts  Painting new court lines and center court symbol  Demolishing the existing basketball post and backboard systems  Installing new basketball post and backboard systems…”

Take a look yourself at the contract with SFGov. It says the courts “need” new paint, but, in fact, they didn’t. Paint some new court lines, sure, but where is all this blueness mentioned in the K itself? We managed just fine without the Ocean of Blue we have now and the yellow “symbol” (logo) we’ll soon get, right?

The blue dominates the dojo now, wouldn’t you agree?

7J7C1583 copy

And oh yeah, the regulars don’t like the courts being closed. So they lash out:

7J7C1587 copy

Actually, the courts have been playable for a while now, but I guess they’re still fenced off in anticipation of the ribbon cutting on Saturday. (Oh, and the hoops themselves each have plastic chastity belt covers locked on to prevent any premature use.)

Anyway, here’s your notice:

7J7C1585 copy

All right, let’s leave this scene…

7J7C1586 copy

..and ponder whether GM should be allowed to buy a $25,000 ad on the neighboring Panhandle Playground. After all, GM paid for the playground originally, and they’d even pay for all the materials for their giant logo ad. And what the heck, we could let them paint everything GM Cobalt Blue (#0F3796; 15, 55, 150), as long as they paid for the paint itself, and then Everybody Would Know how great GM is. So what’s the diff between this idea and the actual deal Rec and Park just agreed to?

I’ll tell you, the GSW new logo (one supposes it will be installed afore September 10th, 2016, the day of its coming out party) will be seen, every day, by many many UCSF people from the nearby Parnassus Campus. How do you think they’re going to react when they see it, after all the Warriors have done to screw over UCSF at Mission Bay?

We’ll see.

“GRANT AGREEMENT AND PERMIT TO ENTER Between Good Tidings Foundation and San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (dated June 23, 2016 for reference purposes) This Grant Acceptance Agreement and Permit to Enter (the “Agreement”), is dated for reference purposes only as of _________________, 2016, by and between the City and County of San Francisco (“City”), acting through the Recreation and Park Department (the “Department” or “RPD”), and Good Tidings Foundation (“Good Tidings”), a California nonprofit public benefit corporation (collectively referred to herein as the “Parties”) yada yada yada…

Here They Are: The Brand-New Oakland Warriors Basketball Hoops in the GGP Panhandle – Reopening Soon

Monday, August 29th, 2016

You’d think the Oakland Warriors would be paying for blacktop ball in, IDK, Oakland?

IMG_0722 copy

Wonder if they’ll be able to advertise here, the way they fixed things at the (failed? failing? improving?) Willie Brown Academy…

We’ll find out Sept 10th.

SAVE THE DATE: Our Oakland Warriors Will Do _Something_ on September 10th, 2016, to Promote Their Move to Frisco

Wednesday, August 24th, 2016

One supposes. Somewhere around Golden Gate Park?

Let’s see here, they just did their advertising deal with SFUSD.

And the Panhandle blacktop backboards, well they’re all shut down now, getting refurbished. See?

7J7C0869 copy

And the Oakland Warriors have been on a somewhat offensive charm offensive in Frisco lately, the better to do battle with these people, as the UCSF Mission Bay people wonder about their future.

I suppose we’ll just have to wait ’til September 10th…

The Goldest Lamborghini in Town – Bienvenidos a Miami! – Let’s Talk License Plate Violations

Tuesday, August 5th, 2014

Florida plates, BTW.

Or should I say, Florida plate, as this gold exoticar doesn’t have a front license plate, which is a no-no in The Golden State.

And of course, you’ve got less than three weeks after moving to California to deal with the California DMV, but I’ll tell you, most Lambos you see in SF aren’t properly registered with CA DMV.

Anyway, this car reminded of Dennis Rodman’s old ride, one that’s being used as a daily driver by a CCSF student.

Stay gold, Lambo owner. Bienvenidos a 415 / 628 / 650!

San Francisco’s Most Famous Car of 2014: A Mirror-Finish Aston Martin Rapide, “Because Eff You, That’s Why”

Wednesday, June 11th, 2014

[UPDATE: Word on the street is that the driver lives in The Avenues, where he has a rep for driving too fast out there. Word on the street is that the driver has a “neckbeard.”]

I seen this $200k+ Aston Martin Rapide all over town – I seen it I seen it! In the Financh, the SoMA, the Fillmore, pretty much all over the 1/8th of a pie slice that is northeastern SF.

(This ride has now officially stolen the thunder of that Kandy-Kolored Gold-Flake Streamline Baby Lambo used as a daily driver(!) by a CCSF junior college student.)

So, why the mirror finish, dahling? Well, per Arlen of Flickr, “because fuck you, that’s why.”

And, has this garish Aston been registered in California yet? Well, maybe, but if it has a CA license plate, it’s certainly not mounted on the back where it should be, and that’s odd, because it’s been in town for a while, oh well.

Who can solve this mystery?

As seen being driven, poorly, in the Upper Fillmore area…

New Warriors Arena to be Slightly Lower, Assuming It Gets Built in the First Place – Artist’s Conception

Tuesday, November 12th, 2013

So, unlike the disastrous America’s Cup and 8 Washington campaigns, the Golden State Warriors project is based around stuff that San Franciscans can actually benefit from.

So that’s a good sign.

Remember, the more you complain now, the better this deal gets for San Francisco. You the public are the bad cop and genial SFGov figurehead Ed Lee is the good cop. And of course the good cop won’t be able to get the best deal possible for San Francisco without the bad cop.

If Ed Lee doesn’t like this game, then he can just retire, right? Or go back to his old job the way he promised to in the first place, right?

It’s too bad that Oakland will lose its team.

Oh well.

The 2013 America’s Cup 2013 is a Lie – This Empty “Village” Shows Why Mayor Ed Lee is So Furious

Monday, July 8th, 2013

I understand that Mayor Ed Lee has a cheerleading function as a part of his job. Fine.

But what’s this? What the Hell?

“We expect to have some 500,000 people on a daily basis…”

Take a look on the YouTube, at around 9:30 and, mind you, this is AFTER everything blew up and people started realizing that the 2013 America’s Cup won’t be anywhere near as popular as advertised:

So, does Ed Lee actually believe that there’s a chance that the America’s Cup will attract anything close to a half million people “on a daily basis?”

No he does not.

So why did he say it?

Mmmm…

Anyway, here’s the so-called village on a day when it was supposed to full of so-called America’s Cup fans:

Word around City Hall is that befuddled Mayor Ed Lee, our very own Mr. Magoo, is a little peeved with Larry Ellison and the AC crew.

(Not that Ed Lee or his longtime minion and spokesmodel Christine Falvey would ever admit to there being the slightest problem with anything Ed Lee has ever done or been told to do by Willie Brown or Gavin Newsom or Rose Pak. To wit, Ed Lee’s failed “stop and frisk” proposals from last year. That one was just another feather in Ed Lee’s cap, per CF)

Oh well.

Now, what the heck is  America’s Cup: Economic Impacts of a Match on San Francisco Bay?Is it the “Independent Study” what everybody cites as proof of how great the AC is going to be?

I think it is!

Let’s take a look at the first line:

“The America’s Cup is the world’s third-largest sporting competition, after the Olympics and soccer’s World Cup.”

Here it is in the flesh:

So, let’s think about this here. I guess the bullshit Bay Area Council Economic Institute (BACEI) organization is allowing that the Summer Olympics and the World Cup just might possibly be bigger than an America’s Cup. But what about the Winter Olympics? Oh, and what about the Super Bowl?

Who actually believes that the America’s Cup, that thing that NBC needs to be paid in order to broadcast, is actually going to be bigger than a Super Bowl?

Nobody.

Not even the cheerleaders.

So why do they say these kinds of things?

All right here’s one more thing from the messed-up study what’s going to cost the taxpayers of San Francisco tens of millions of dollars. It discusses, and I’m srlsy, the “fleet of super yachts” what are going to be attracted to the bay area due to the America’s Cup, and then it talks about how much money we’re going to make by gassing them up and Windexing the shiny parts and stuff like that.

I’m srsly.

These cheerleaders are members of a modern day Cargo Cult and we’re all along for the ride.

Why are we funding Larry Ellison’s ego trip of a boat race?

To review, IRL:

The world’s most popular sport may be soccer, but in cold, hard dollars, nobody throws a party like the National Football League.

• 1. Super Bowl

• 2. Summer Olympics

• 3. FIFA World Cup

• 4. Daytona 500

• 5. Rose Bowl

• 6. NCAA Men’s Final Four

• 7. Winter Olympics Games

• 8. Kentucky Derby

• 9. World Series

• 10. NBA Finals”

The America’s Cup, you will note, is not on this list.

Oh well.

Golden State Warriors Modify Semi-Publicly-Financed Arena Proposal – Say Hello To My Little Friend!

Sunday, May 5th, 2013

Well the announcement is officially coming this AM, but Messrs. Matier und Ross already have the skivvy on the brand-new, slightly-more-NIMBY-friendly proposal.

And, here, check the latest illustrations.

From the former proposal, a silvery looming UFO with kayak access…

…to the new proposal, a slightly lower silvery looming UFO without kayak access:

So Warriors, take that 13% rate down to 3% and then you might have something, you might have a privately-financed stadium deal.

Now let’s review our waterfront proposals.

The America’s Cup deal was poorly-negotiated on purpose so we could pay for Larry Ellison’s ego trip. It’s an ongoing travesty.

And 8 Washington is corruption.

But this here arena proposal seems OK fine to me, more or less.

I’ll now invite the rich, property-owning NIMBYs of SoMA to move to Fairfield, where 15% of the houses are in foreclosure.

The Simpsons had a Monorail, We have the America’s Cup: “Benefits” Slashed 90% from $10 Billion

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

Oh, no no no no no. The original estimate of the “economic benefits” (whatever the Hell that amorphous amorphism means) of the 34th America’s Cup was $9.9 B-as-in-boy billion.

Check it:

So that means that the supposed “benefits” of AC34 have dropped more than 90% as the costs continue to rise.

This mounting scandal is the talk of the town – it’ll be on Forum at 9:00 AM:

“America’s Cup organizers are falling short in their efforts to raise private donations to help pay for the cost of bringing the America’s Cup sailing competition to San Francisco — and that could leave the city on the hook for about $20 million. The Board of Supervisors holds hearings Wednesday to discuss the shortfall. Supporters say even without all of the promised private funds, the city still benefits financially from hosting the America’s Cup.

Host: Michael Krasny

Guests:

  • Jane Sullivan, city spokesperson for the America’s Cup
  • John Avalos, San Francisco supervisor representing District 11″

In closing, fuck you, you deadbeat Larry Ellison.

And here’s the news from last year:

I understand that Mayor Ed Lee has a cheerleading function as a part of his job. Fine.

But what’s this? What the Hell?

“We expect to have some 500,000 people on a daily basis…”

No he does not.

So why does he say it?

Mmmm…

Now, speaking of cheerleading, @olivaglobal is the dude who was hired by the San Francisco Chronicle to promote the America’s Cup over the next 1.5 years. Here he goes:

That est was only for final match wknd. Rainy Tues est is 10K-20K LOL. Srsly look at plan.”

So what’s the estimate, for real, for the crowd size on a off day during the AC? Appears as if these two AC34 cheerleaders are out of sync.

Now, speaking of studies, what the Hell is The America’s Cup: Economic Impacts of a Match on San Francisco Bay?Is it the “Independent Study” what everybody cites as proof of how great the AC is going to be?

I think it is!

Let’s take a look at the first line:

Who actually believes that the America’s Cup, that thing where half the staff just got laid off and NBC needs to be paid in order to broadcast, is actually going to be bigger than a Super Bowl?

Nobody.

Not even the cheerleaders.

These cheerleaders are members of a modern day Cargo Cult and we’re all along for the ride.

And oh, we’re going to get the Golden State Warriors without funding the stadium at Piers 30-32? All right, so why then are we funding Larry Ellison’s ego trip of a boat race? Why are we allowing Him to get away with this?

I know not.

Screw the America’s Cup.

The world’s most popular sport may be soccer, but in cold, hard dollars, nobody throws a party like the National Football League.
