I’ll tell you, Mavericks used to be something, man. But now it’s all corporate and shit, man.
Sort of.
Hey, isn’t the Mavericks surf contest just like the Burning Man? Just look where they got started – same beach, different county:

I’ll you, ten years from now, you’ll hear about some underground event what’s been gaining in popularity and I’ll bet you it will have gotten its start on one of these Bay Area, Pacific Coast beaches that you can see in the photo.
Anyway, Mavs is on, once again, this coming Sunday, January 20th, 2013.
Now back in the day, to see Mavericks you’d just park you ride on the Pacific Coast Highway and then ride your bikes to the beach. Easy peasy.
And then they’d let you climb up on the bluff for a good view (even though people fell off of it all the time).
This thing:

(Mmmm… why do these rocks a “breakwater”)
And then they didn’t want people on the bluff so they put up an “event village” or something on the beach below.
Dangerous hilarity ensued:

Via dwan.mac click to expand
And then, Mavs went Hollywood:

But, you know, I guess it’s really the same event as it always was.
Fundamentally.
(Just as with Burning Man.)
So, look for all the same thrills chills and spills as back in the day:
Darryl “Flea” Virostko was a tad aggressive in the first round of 2008:

Canon 1D Mark II, Canon EF 300mm 2.8 IS plus Canon 2x II extender at f8.0
And if you’re on a boat with an aggressive Captain, this will be your view on Sunday* January 20th, 2013:

All right, see you there!
But let’s hope we have more lulz than lulls.
‘Cause nobody wants to see too many heats like this:

Tink happy tots!
*Boy, isn’t that a sponsor-friendly day of the week? How convenient! Let’s hope the waves show up in addition to all the sponsors and advertisers…

Well this is different. Legacy bay area media institution KNTV is is actually adding investigative reporters to the payroll.
Get all the deets below.
I’ll tell you, I’m getting a Dan Noyes, quasi-in-yo-face vibe from both these newcomers.
Here’s Tony Kovaleski, on the left, going after a purported “Guido” executive at Pebble Beach:

Via Denver Westword
And here’s lovely Jenna Susko – oh man, she’s not afraid to ask questions as this highlight reel amply demonstrates:

Bon Courage, Tony Kovaleski!
Bon Courage, Jenna Susko!
All the deets:
“NBC Bay Area Expands Investigative Reporting Capabilities - Award-Winning Investigative Reporter Tony Kovaleski To Lead New Investigative Team - Jenna Susko Joins Station As Investigative Reporter
SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 11, 2011 — NBC Bay Area today announced that it has added two investigative reporters to the station’s news staff, significantly increasing the station’s investigative reporting capabilities in advance of launching a new unit early next year.
Bay Area native Tony Kovaleski joins NBC Bay Area to lead the station’s investigative team after working at television stations in Phoenix, Houston and Denver. While in Denver, Kovaleski exposed problems with emergency services at Denver’s airport and uncovered inappropriate gifts given to government appointees. Kovaleski’s reports resulted in significant changes in airport operations and in tighter regulations governing gifts and travel. As the winner of the prestigious Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia award in 2010, the national Edward R. Murrow Award for Investigative Journalism, the Sigma Delta Chi award, the National Headliner award and more than 26 Emmy Awards including this year’s Emmy for Investigative Journalism, he is considered one of the country’s premiere investigative reporters. Kovaleski is a graduate of San Jose State University with a degree in Journalism.
Investigative reporter Jenna Susko comes to NBC Bay Area after working at television stations in the southeastern United States. She has built a reputation for quality investigative reporting with stories about poor oversight of FEMA funds across the Gulf Coast, mismanagement in a court system allowing criminals to easily get cases dismissed and security flaws at a local school system. Susko has a degree from Florida State University in Communications and English Literature.
“As we increase our investment in high-quality local journalism, we are very pleased to welcome these two investigative journalists to the Bay Area and into our newsroom,” said Richard Cerussi, President and General Manager of NBC Bay Area. ”Tony and Jenna are the first of many new team members who will allow us to bring Bay Area viewers more of the kind of in-depth investigations that result in positive change.”

Sorry, unknown Bank of American,* there are some answers that even Google doesn’t have, like how tall Christina Loren is.
But, thanks for asking.
All right, keep up the good work, BofA workers!
Ah, memories:

Well then, you’re in luck.

Let me tell you, San Francisco News stations have learned that it just doesn’t pay to advertise their names on the sides of vans, you know, because that’s just making them a target for mischief, right?
They have differing policies on just how incognito they are, but this is typical. You can’t get more incognito than that.
Comes now, straight outta San Jose, KNTV-TV, our NBC affiliate for the Bay Area. See?

Now, I just happened to have an 8oz Krylon Premium Metallic Gold Foil #1050 in my rucksack on this night and I was all set to go to town, you know, to express myself, but then I noticed the Ecologic and Giants stickers.
And I couldn’t do it, man, I just couldn’t mess with the Giants AND the Ecologic (whatever the Hell that is). My Message would have been clouded, dig?

Well played, NBCBAYAREA.
Life was simpler back in the day, non?

I know, but I won’t tell you.
Now, who at KNTV NBC Bay Area Channel 3, Channel 11 thinks that popular METEOROLOGIST Christina Loren is part of something that is “bridging the gap between the way other big markets present news and how we do it in the Bay?”

Again, IKBIWTY.
But, one might get the feeling that certain person(s) at KNTV want to shake things up ’round here.
I’ll tell you, I don’t look at the KNTV ’cause my rabbit ears can’t pull in the signal from Down South, but that ad campaign they put up last year was jarring, it seemed like something not very bay area at all.
We’ll see how it goes…
