The Youngest Raptor in the Panhandle Yearns for Craig Newmark’s Backyard

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

This hungry juvenile hawk (red-tailed? red-shouldered? red-something anyway) perched on a Eucalyptus tree in the Golden Gate Park Panhandle has stopped screeching for its parents’ food and started hunting on its own.

If only it knew about Craig Newmark’s nearby backyard, a veritable smorgasbord of delicious boids (a smorgasbird, if you will) that’s just up the hill. Here’s a recent menu du jour.

Happy hunting, little raptor.

Newspaper Classified Ad Safety Questioned After Slayings

Monday, April 27th, 2009

First of all, forget everything you know about any crime that occurred before Al Gore took the initiative in creating the Internet during his service in the United States Congress, forget any knowledge of anything bad occurring before the Web upset the apple cart, and forget about any possible “want ad killers“ from ages past.

Great. Now let’s read the news of the day.

Craigslist newspaper classified ad safety questioned after slayings
Verne Kopytoff, Chronicle Staff Writer
Sunday, April 26, 2009

Responding to an ad on Craigslist in a newspaper for a used car in East Palo Alto relationship got one man shot and robbed woman killed. A woman selling a laptop sofa on the classifieds site in a newspaper was held up at gunpoint in Vallejo raped in Burbank when she met with a prospective buyer.

Although millions of transactions spawned by Craigslist newspaper classified ads are completed without a problem, a small number end in violent crime.

That potential was underscored this week by… [the Craigslist Killer, yada, yada, yada.]

The high-profile slaying raises the questions: How safe is Craigslist are newspaper classified ads? And should the company newspaper industry do more to prevent violent crime?

Ah! It’s the weapon of choice of the classifed ad killer! Ah!

More than 42 million people used the site in March read newspapers.

[Nogoodniks] have tried to take advantage of the service by posing as legitimate users to find victims. Many users think nothing of inviting strangers they meet through the site to their homes to sell a sofa.

The frequency of violent crime on Craigslist through newspapers is unknown because law enforcement doesn’t track it. Several Bay Area police departments have had to investigate at least a few incidents in recent years.

Nationally, there have been at least four homicides related to Craigslist hundreds of slayings linked to newspapers.

Violent crime through Craigslist newspapers is in the spotlight following a series of attacks. Here are some precautions that can help users avoid falling victim:

– Insist on a public meeting place like a cafe.

– Tell a friend or family member where you’re going.

– Take your cell phone along.

– Consider having a friend accompany you.

– Trust your instincts.

And There You Have It.

San Francisco’s Favorite Woodpecker – The Northern Flicker

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) woodpeckers are hot in San Francisco these days, what with all the attention they’re getting from City Lights Luminary and craigslist founder Craig Newmark and SFWeekly.

Here’s a female spotted two days back at the ”Blair Witchy“ Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve on University of California land above UCSF. Maybe she’s the life partner of the male Craig recently saw in his backyard located lower down the hill? Could be.

Also known as a ”clape, gaffer woodpecker, harry-wicket, heigh-ho, wake-up, walk-up, wick-up, yarrup, or gawker bird.”

Love your polka dots, little Flicker.

See Craig Newmark. See Craig Speak March 24th. Speak Craig, Speak!

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Oh baby, it’s on! It’s craigslist’s namesake, Craig Newmark, the Daimyo of the Internets, live, in person, at San Francisco’s Fort Mason (right next to Green’s Restaurant, AFAIK) this Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday, March 24th, 2009 at 7:30 PM.

Here’s the problem, though - this affair is open to the general public and it’s free and there’s beer and wine afterwards, so tickets are going to go like hotcakes. Don’t look for them here at the tickets section of CL, just go to this page to get in on the action.

Is Craig a pimp? Perhaps moderator Douglas McGray, Irvine Fellow, New America Foundation will ask about that:

It’s ON!

craigslist.org may be the only site where you can get anything you need for life cheap, or even for free. The free community classifieds service, launched as an email listserv for San Franciscans in 1995, helps over 50 million monthly users find homes, jobs, cars, stuff, spouses, friends and flings. The site’s simple design and old age (in Internet company years) hasn’t kept it from being at the pulse of online life. craigslist is one of the top internet websites registering over 13 billion page views per month. The daily flurry of activity on the site has created a full-fledged culture of craigslist in communities around the world–even as most on the site simply want to sell or acquire something, many users participate in ongoing conversations. Founder Craig Newmark visits Zócalo to talk about the web and social change, net neutrality and government transparency, education, and political causes like supporting veterans and  building a stable environment for peace on the West Bank.

Craigslist Strikes Back Against the Sheriff of Cook County, Illinois

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Illinois Sheriff Tom Dart’s ridiculous lawsuit against craigslist inspired a press release today from craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster. Read it below.

While the the lawsuit from Thomas Dart, Esq. was getting laughed at across the country, founder Craig Newmark himself found time to note the issue on his personal blog. On it goes…

The message of day - Craig Newmark is NOT a pimp:

Chicago Politician Tom Dart vs. Craigslist: Frivolous Lawsuit of the Week

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

What’s the deal with Chicago lawyers filing lawsuits against the Craigslist? Sometimes it seems every problem that Cook County has can be traced to San Francisco’s famous 25-employee private corporation. For example, a few years back the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law, Inc. got slapped back by the court system. (Listen to the black box tapes of their lawsuit going down in flames here.) But today brings news of another Midwestern pettifogger going after the CL.

Comes now career politician Tom Dart, who is using his elected position as Sheriff of Cook County to file a ridiculous lawsuit against craigslist over prostitution advertising. Did Chicago prostitutes use other kinds of media before the creation of craigslist? Why yes. And as a matter of fact, the Chicago Reader newspaper (a free weekly like the Bay Guardian and SF Weekly) is making money right now today with erotic services ads (as are the aforementioned Bay Guardian and SF Weekly, of course). Let’s take a look at a few of today’s ads sitting in newsboxes right outside the Sheriff’s office:

So what’s the difference between the Chicago Reader and craigslist?

Is Thomas Dart still promoting his craigslist boycott? Good luck with that and all. I mean, that stands a better chance of working than this lawsuit. I mean really, is Craig’s list “a source” of prostitution?

But why would this elected sheriff/lawyer want to go out of town to pick on cragslist? Perhaps he wins even if/when his lawsuit fails? Anyway, his press conference is starting now, noon Central Standard Time. Let’s give him a chance to make his case and pretend it has a ghost of a chance of succeeding.

Make sure to pay attention to him - he really enjoys all the attention.

UPDATE: Valleywag just posted a bit along the same vein.

UPDATE #2: Per Mr. Dart, craigslist is not passive, but is actually “actively involved” with prostitution.

Like this? Artist’s conception of how Mr. Dart views Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist:

How far will Mr. Dart, Esq. push this? Will he end up getting sanctioned by the courts?

Stay tuned.

Adam Jackson from AdamsBlock.com to Appear on KQED’s Forum

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Hey kids, you know what frequency modulation radio is, don’t you? It’s like the Internet without pictures (but WITH multipath). On Tuesday, December 16th at 9:00 AM, tune into KQED-FM 88.5 to listen to Adam Jackson’s sad tale concerning the Adam’s Block website.

“When Adam Jackson pointed a web cam outside his apartment in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, he says he just wanted to let his parents and friends see the crime and hear the noise that was keeping him up at night. But his website became a sensation, attracting national attention. In the first half hour, Jackson joins us to talk about the experience — and about why he shut down the site last week.”

Will members of the Twelve Oz. Crew put down their paint cans for a moment to call into FM OG Michael Krasney? No doubt!

Or better yet, put down your choke ring antenna and download the mp3 or listen live.

Bonus! When Adam’s bit ends at 9:30 AM, Craig Newmark (he was like the Adam Jackson of the 1990’s) will come on to discuss the following:

“In the second half hour, we talk with Craigslist founder Craig Newmark. President-elect Barack Obama’s platform calls for a “Craigslist for service” that would “leverage technology to increase awareness of and participation in service opportunities.” Newmark joins us to share his vision for using technology to expand civic engagement.”

UPDATE: it turns out Adam got bumped by some breaking news having to do with Obama. Oh noes! But rescheduling appears to in the offing. Stayed tuned…

Loneliest Job in the World – Selling Subscriptions to the New York Times

Monday, April 21st, 2008

This salesman shilling subscriptions to the actual dead tree paper version of the New York Times didn’t seem to get much traction during an otherwise bustling street fair in San Francisco over the weekend.

Something like 75% off and free New York Mets swag wasn’t enough to tempt the typical passerby. Perhaps if he could promise that a fetching scooter rider, such as this one, would deliver the paper each day, things would be different…

Cue tumbleweeds.

Who is to blame for the decline of newspapers? Is it San Francisco’s very own Craig Newmark and his feisty CEO buddy Jim Buckmaster? Well, you old-school newsies should be tickled pink to hear that the people behind craigslist are now worried about being taken over by eBay.

Not much consolation, but there it is.

Craigslist vs. Crgslst. Will Craig Allow This “Sexy” Search Tool to Live?

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

You know all about craigslist. It’s always in the news. But what about the new AJAX powered search tool called crgslst? Does using RSS feeds this way violate the craigslist terms of service?

The approach used by Crgslst would allow for some nice improvements in the future. The question is whether or not Crsglst HAS a future. Check it out while you can.
