NIMBY’s vs. the SFMTA: Local Objections to New Traffic Signals on McAllister at Broderick and Scott for the 5 FultonThursday, January 29th, 2015
This effort appears to be similar to the SFMTA’s attempt to add traffic signals on Haight at Scott and Pierce.
This isn’t the worst example of NIMBYism, but I’d say it’s fairly alarmist, fairly absurd.
I’ll just say that, generally speaking, it’s generally harder to get around town these days by car, by bike and by MUNI, compared with ten or twenty years ago. Part of this has to do with our newer, absurdly-wide sidewalks, designed for pedestrian “comfort.”
And yet, most ped and cyclist deaths in San Francisco involve fault from the peds and cyclists. Here’s 2014:
“The Police Department found that in the 17 pedestrian deaths, drivers were responsible for eight and pedestrians were responsible for nine. Bicyclists were responsible in all three instances when they died.”
(I should do a video on how to be a pedestrian in SF. It might involve some jaywalking but it would also involve extreme alertness on behalf of peds. You see, the way to prevent a lot of ped deaths in SF would be to get inside their heads to see what’s going wrong.)
IMO, the SFMTA should leave McAllister alone and then start taking out as many bus stops as politically possible.
I’ll tell you, not that many cyclists pass by Broderick and McAllister compared with Scott and McAllister, it seems, owing to geography. So looking at McAllister and Scott, it seems that the lights will be timed against cyclists using FULTON DIVISADERO MCALLISTER eastbound as an alternative to the already-overcrowded Wiggle route to get from the Golden Gate Park Panhandle to the Financh.
So for my own selfish reasons, I’d prefer that MUNI not make these changes, but who am I to stand in their way? What the MUNI people are saying is that we’ll all be better off overall, and 40 seconds each way each day will add up to millions of seconds, eventually.
In conclusion, meh. If MUNI wants to put in lights, we should let them do it.

Hey look, even spaces on the side of the block where I live.
Like, I don’t care, but man the NIMBY’s are not going to be happy with this, NOT ONE BIT! If the spaces get used too much, it’ll piss off the NIMBYs. But if the spaces get used not that much, it will also piss off the NIMBYs.
What’s next, spaces reserved for Avis and Hertz cars? Perhaps. Why not?
If you stop in one of these spaces in your private car, you risk a ticket. If you go and actually park in one of these spaces, you know, like you’ve been doing the past two decades, well, you’re going to get towed, with extreme prejudice. And that will run you $500-$1000. So, respect!
As with every other program SFGov does, some of us will win and some of us will lose.
Oh, hey, what about street cleaning? Is ZipCar going to get a pass on this or will they send somebody out to move the cars for two hours (ala Kramer in Seinfeld) or will something else occur? I know not.

But the citizens of San Francisco don’t owe the flying public an assortment of googaws, no no. What the citizens of San Francisco owe the flying public are longer, better runways that are farther apart from each other, you know, runways that don’t need a special dispensation from the FAA. To wit:
Damn the torpedo fish (or whatever else is down there), full speed ahead (with longer and better runways farther apart)
And oh, the concomitant Egg™ Footstool costs thousands of dollars as well.
*If United sprang for leather, then the retail price is $16k each, srsly.

OMG, the BIGGEST 18-Wheeler Tractor Trailer Allowed in CA – On Masonic, by San Francisco Day School – CityTarget TruckMonday, December 23rd, 2013
IMO, it’s more fun to not explain things, but here we go, let’s pay off that headline:
1. God damn, this trailer is freaking huge – I’ve never seen one bigger. This aint no 20-footer and it aint no 40 footer. It’s a 53-footer. It’s Harder Better Faster Stronger. It’s as big* an 18-wheeler tractor trailer as you’re ever going to see, Gentle Reader.

2. Now here’s what pisses some people off about San Francisco Day School. These parents enter their kinder into the San Francisco SFUSD school busing program lottery. And, because they don’t already have an older kid already in a good public school AND because they don’t live a “low test score area” (like in parts of The Mission or near The Projects), they lose out in the lottery. So then they say, all right, well, we’ve lost the lottery, but we can simply pony up $27k(!) to put our four-year-old into a private school. But then they have to qualify by being interviewed. And then, sometimes, they get rejected. And then they get seriously pissed off. Anywho, Masonic Avenue / Boulevard is reason #1 why SFDS will never be a high status school (in comparison with the tonier outfits up in
Specific Whites Pacific Heights.) Masonic is how the Jennie Zhus of this world get back and forth betwixt San Francisco Proper and the westside, The Avenues, the West Bay neighborhoods like The Richmond and The Sunset. Masonic, for better or worse, is a freeway substitute and it will always be that way and, for the worse, it’s the front door of SFDS. These days there’s a plan afoot to put in trees and a median that will slow down all the cars and the occasional MUNI bus, but that won’t really change things for SFDS. All the parents and nannies will still double park on neighboring streets, oh well. Look at the photo and there it is, the SFDS.
3. Oh man, the millionaire property owners of the lily-white “NOPNA” Northeast of Panhandle Homeowners Association DID NOT want to see those, those people shopping at a retail store up at Geary and Masonic again, oh no, but that’s what’s happening despite their best efforts. I myself didn’t object to the CityTarget, you know, but even I’m a little surprised to see such a big rig heading up Mervyn’s Heights with the Target targets on the side.
Of course, all of the above was implied by the simple photo and short headline…
*Unless you move to Texas, and even then…
**Who’s getting interviewed, really, the parents or the kid? IDK. I’ll tell you, I bet if Will Smith tried to get his kid into this joint, there’d be no problem, no problem at all. But if you don’t impress SFDS enough to get a green light, you’re money’s no good there.

Insight #1: Underground can be used as a verb. As in:
“San Francisco Coalition to Underground Utilities”
The name of this NIMBYhood group looked like a typo to me here. This Coalition to Underground Utilities is a really stupid name for various reasons, IMO.
Insight #2: Supervisor Mark Farrell might look like a doofus, but he’s not.
Of course he owes his narrow election victory to a man named Coates. So if Coates wants something done up here in San Francisco* but it doesn’t increase our commonweal, well, that’s what we’d call a conflict of interest (or everyday politics, take your pick.) Anyway, as District 2 Supervisor, he’s well north of his scionic predecessors, but he’ll be sure to tow the party line (the right of the aisle party line) whether it makes sense or not.
Insight #3: Farrell views these Russian Hill cable-burying aesthetic fetishists just as I do.
Here we go, from “Report of Meeting with Supervisors Farrell and Chiu”
“Supervisor Farrell is also looking for ways to pitch it beyond aesthetics.”
Oh really! There just might be something more important out in the world than the aesthetic imperatives of a handful of Russian Hill millionaires who want to give the 415 a makeover and who want to tax every San Francisco renter $50 a year for the “benefit?”
So I suppose we’ll soon hear about the important safety benefits of doing whatever it is these aestheticians can dream up?
But IRL, Wires are Life. Wires connect people and move people cheaply and safely. Wires are beautiful, man.

I’m not saying that the monumentally-flawed process that begat this mess is responsible for all of the traffic deaths in the area, just some of them.
So like why is it that drivers going to Hayes Valley get more time to turn left onto Octavia each signal cycle than all the peds and cyclists on Market outbound? Peds get only four seconds to proceed west each 90-second light cycle, right?
Why not say no more left turns at this intersection – why not that?
What else can be done to fix horrible horrible Octavia Boulevard?
