Pop-Up Ford Motor Company Bikeshare Rental at Fell and Central – Vandalized Already – Where Can the Next Station Go?

The SFMTA or somebody experimented with this part of this part of Central by putting long-lasting,  downtown-style hash marks on the ground, as if they were going to put meters here. But these spaces are gone now, of course:

(I’ll tell you, this is an amateur effort. I don’t think this is the way to organize after missing your chance before installation. Perhaps you might get some palliative cliches from London Breed’s office (but I wouldn’t address her as a mere Supervisor, oh no), but the other two literally get paid to promote corporate bike rental / advertising in Frisco.)

Here’s the vandalism, on the Ford part. It’s already been cleaned as best as you can expect from the basically minimum-wage (15% over minimum – hardly “living wages,” as was promised and as is still claimed) workers:

There was conflict online as well. Some of it looked like this:

That discussion of bicycle activists vs. area locals went on and on, oh well. I’m not sure how the Ford Motor / Motivate crew went about doing its vaunted outreach, but it seems to have been pretty minimal. I think the Bay to Breakers people have put a lot more effort in, by way of comparison, with less at stake.

Anyway, the Ford Motor people are out there, scouting more locations. The next location after this certainly won’t be at Hayes and Cole, which was Ford’s original choice. Apparently, about ten locals yammered about this and that was all it took to get Ford to back down. Of course, that was before installation.

Now, feverish with victory, the residents of Hayes and Cole are discussing where the next Ford Motor station should go, to fill in the network. I think the suggestions were John Adams campus of CCSF at Hayes and Masonic, USF, the Panhandle, and maybe St. Mary’s, I forget. But they sure as Hell don’t want anything like the above anywhere on the far end of Hayes Street.

It wouldn’t take much for Ford to take its half-assed, minimal notice and turn that into actual notice, if it wants its expensive marketing effort to be less controversial…

NIMBYS are Made, Not Born: The Taking of Alexandria 1 2 3

I never saw the original ALEXANDRIA way out there in the Richmond, but I did see the (gun-free) 20th Anniversary release of ET in the subdivided three-screen Alex 123 in back aught-two just afore it shut down forever in aught-four.

It’s been an empty hulk, a brokedown palace ever since:

Now here’s the reverse angle with new housing going in to replace the parking lot:

One stated goal of this project and others similar is to lower the value of housing, or at least lower the pressure on housing values, in the Richmond District. If you’re sitting across the street in your owner-occupied house THIS PROJECT DOES NOT BENEFIT YOU.

And the kicker is YES, IT WILL BE HARDER TO PARK IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD.

All you can say for sure is that there will be pros and cons with this project, and others similar. There will be winners and losers. It’s easy to ID the losers is what I’m saying…

Read the news and turn the pages:

“After more than 10 years of hosting one of the most anticipated race registration lotteries, lighting up the streets of San Francisco and handing out those coveted Tiffany necklaces to finishers, the Nike Women’s Half Marathon will not be returning to Union Square in 2016.”

Here’s your NIMBY problem – the Presidio and RPD don’t/didn’t mind this route, but millionaire residents of the Western Addition and the Great Sand Wastes certainly do/did.

And speaking of RPD, SFGov, DPW, the SFMTA, and all the rest of the “City Family*” Alphabet soup, they’re always happy to oblige but it’s going to cost you (NIKE) big big bucks to operate here, more here than anywhere else in ‘Merica (except possibly NYC – it can go either way, depending).

And then there’s the “bandit” issue, which we’re not supposed to talk about, but bandits is everywhere, right? So I don’t know – we probably have more than our fair share of banditas. granted Still, I don’t think that could kill a tradition.

I don’t know. There’s a story here though – Enquiring Minds Want To Know.

What if some kind of SFGov fee got increased by like 1000% all of a sudden? What if SFGov has done the wrong thing, once again?

Static friction is what an event needs to overcome to get started here (like, OMG, it’s going to cost us how much?!), but Nike managed to overcome that reaction, a decade ago. OTOH, your kinetic, that’s what wears you down, year after year, until you just say, “Screw you guys, I’m going home.”

NIMBY’s vs. the SFMTA: Local Objections to New Traffic Signals on McAllister at Broderick and Scott for the 5 Fulton

This effort appears to be similar to the SFMTA’s attempt to add traffic signals on Haight at Scott and Pierce.

This isn’t the worst example of NIMBYism, but I’d say it’s fairly alarmist, fairly absurd.

I’ll just say that, generally speaking, it’s generally harder to get around town these days by car, by bike and by MUNI, compared with ten or twenty years ago. Part of this has to do with our newer, absurdly-wide sidewalks, designed for pedestrian “comfort.”

And yet, most ped and cyclist deaths in San Francisco involve fault from the peds and cyclists. Here’s 2014:

The Police Department found that in the 17 pedestrian deaths, drivers were responsible for eight and pedestrians were responsible for nine. Bicyclists were responsible in all three instances when they died.” 

(I should do a video on how to be a pedestrian in SF. It might involve some jaywalking but it would also involve extreme alertness on behalf of peds. You see, the way to prevent a lot of ped deaths in SF would be to get inside their heads to see what’s going wrong.)

IMO, the SFMTA should leave McAllister alone and then start taking out as many bus stops as politically possible.

I’ll tell you, not that many cyclists pass by Broderick and McAllister compared with Scott and McAllister, it seems, owing to geography. So looking at McAllister and Scott, it seems that the lights will be timed against cyclists using FULTON DIVISADERO MCALLISTER eastbound as an alternative to the already-overcrowded Wiggle route to get from the Golden Gate Park Panhandle to the Financh.

So for my own selfish reasons, I’d prefer that MUNI not make these changes, but who am I to stand in their way? What the MUNI people are saying is that we’ll all be better off overall, and 40 seconds each way each day will add up to millions of seconds, eventually.

In conclusion, meh. If MUNI wants to put in lights, we should let them do it.
