Apparently, the millionaire homeowners of the Western Addition were among the most oppressed people on God’s Green Earth, ’cause each and every year you’d hear them yammering about the annual Bay to Breakers fun run and house party event.

But what about now, what about this year? Well, there’s nary a peep – it’s spooky-quiet. Check it:

That’s quite a change over the past five years.

Now I’ll tell you, some of the non-millionaire residents of the Western Addition aren’t actually looking forward to the BtoB, but most of them handle things with maturity by planning ahead, by making plans to be away if this event bothers them so so much, stuff like that.

But the organized homeowners of the Western A, well, they like to complain. And complain they will until you give them a little hush money:

Since 2012, $88,000 has been donated to both ASNA and NOPNA…

Oh, so that’s why the homeowners groups view BtoB as more of a fundraiser rather than something to yammer about every year…

Here you go, a RESPECT THE NEIGHBORHOOD notice in the Western Addition.

This isn’t a named part of the Western Addition I don’t think – it’s a bit east of the NoPA and the Alamo Square, but the NIMBY mentality is just the same as in those microhoods of the WA.

Legally, this is WRONG WRONG WRONG:

And now it’s time for IRL

The public may post information on some utility poles if the postings follow regulations outlined in Article 5.6 of the Public Works Code. The law was adopted to ensure that flyers posted on public property do not contribute to litter or blight. Illegal postings in the public right of way may be removed by DPW’s Bureau of Street Environmental Services and are subject to fines from $100 to $500.  Call 311 to report.

Signs are defined as any card, decoration, poster, campaign sign, or any object containing or bearing writing that is affixed, posted or fastened to a utility or light pole that is permanently attached to the street or sidewalk.  Signs do not include handbills, banners or A-Frame boards. Bulletin boards designed for neighborhood postings are exempt from this regulation.

Signs attached to buildings and on private property are regulated by Part II Chapter I of the Building Code and violationsshould be reported to the Department of City Planning’s Code Enforcement or call 311 to report.

Tips for Legally Posting Signs on Public Property

To legally place a sign on a utility pole, it must:

Be less than 11 inches in height

No higher than 12 feet from the ground

Conform to the shape of the pole

Be attached with tape or other non-adhesive material such as twine, string or other non-metal banding material

Include a legible posting date in the lower right hand corner

Be removed after 10 days, if the sign is promoting a date specific event

Be removed within 70 days of the posting date

Not be installed on historic street light poles*, traffic signal poles or traffic directional sign poles.

Despite Its “Transit First” Policy, the SFMTA Will Vote to Make Parking Easier for Western Addition Residents on March 3rd – “Area Q”

Perversely, the less efficient our dull-witted SFMTA becomes, the more money it gets. Case in point is the new Area Q Residential Parking Permit area for the NoPA / Alamo Square part of the Western Addition – the MTA will approve its establishment on March 3rd, 2015.

It’ll go a little something like this:

Supposedly, the SFMTA doesn’t care about this issue, since it’s “revenue-neutral” for it, but IRL, the SFMTA just loves this idea. The SFMTA wants to “manage” more and more and more always always always, despite its demonstrated incompetence at performing its core function, which is moving people around.

SFMTA “work rules” make the SFMTA inefficient. (I wonder if they have a list of all these rules.) So the less efficient it becomes, the more money it gets, perversely, in annual RPP revenue. (If the SFMTA operated a McDonalds, a Big Mac would cost $20 and take a half-hour to prepare, cause you know, cost-plus pricing, and you know, “work rules.”)

Anyway, the SFMTA wants to makes things easier for certain people to keep cars on the streets of San Francisco, so that’s a big clue on how it’ll vote come March.

What it actually wants is an annual household SFMTA tax levied on everybody, but this will have to do until that time comes…

OMG, the BIGGEST 18-Wheeler Tractor Trailer Allowed in CA – On Masonic, by San Francisco Day School – CityTarget Truck

IMO, it’s more fun to not explain things, but here we go, let’s pay off that headline:

1. God damn, this trailer is freaking huge – I’ve never seen one bigger. This aint no 20-footer and it aint no 40 footer. It’s a 53-footer. It’s Harder Better Faster Stronger. It’s as big* an 18-wheeler tractor trailer as you’re ever going to see, Gentle Reader.

2. Now here’s what pisses some people off about San Francisco Day School. These parents enter their kinder into the San Francisco SFUSD school busing program lottery. And, because they don’t already have an older kid already in a good public school AND because they don’t live a “low test score area” (like in parts of The Mission or near The Projects), they lose out in the lottery. So then they say, all right, well, we’ve lost the lottery, but we can simply pony up $27k(!) to put our four-year-old into a private school. But then they have to qualify by being interviewed. And then, sometimes, they get rejected. And then they get seriously pissed off. Anywho, Masonic Avenue / Boulevard is reason #1 why SFDS will never be a high status school (in comparison with the tonier outfits up in Specific Whites Pacific Heights.) Masonic is how the Jennie Zhus of this world get back and forth betwixt San Francisco Proper and the westside, The Avenues, the West Bay neighborhoods like The Richmond and The Sunset. Masonic, for better or worse, is a freeway substitute and it will always be that way and, for the worse, it’s the front door of SFDS. These days there’s a plan afoot to put in trees and a median that will slow down all the cars and the occasional MUNI bus, but that won’t really change things for SFDS. All the parents and nannies will still double park on neighboring streets, oh well. Look at the photo and there it is, the SFDS.

3. Oh man, the millionaire property owners of the lily-white “NOPNA” Northeast of Panhandle Homeowners Association DID NOT want to see those, those people shopping at a retail store up at Geary and Masonic again, oh no, but that’s what’s happening despite their best efforts. I myself didn’t object to the CityTarget, you know, but even I’m a little surprised to see such a big rig heading up Mervyn’s Heights with the Target targets on the side.

Just saying.

Of course, all of the above was implied by the simple photo and short headline…

*Unless you move to Texas, and even then…

**Who’s getting interviewed, really, the parents or the kid? IDK. I’ll tell you, I bet if Will Smith tried to get his kid into this joint, there’d be no problem, no problem at all. But if you don’t impress SFDS enough to get a green light, you’re money’s no good there.

Back in the day, it looked like this on the weekends, with college kids barfing up here and there:

Of course, back in the day the business that actually made money on this side of the block was the quite active whorehouse called Gabin. These days, it’s world famous Papalote what’s earning the dollars with their expensive burritos.

But what kind of restaurant would you put in to meet your payroll and pay the rent of $1000 a day in this out-of-the-way location?

Build It And They Will Come: New City Target Store at Geary and Masonic is a Huge Success – And It’s So Big

Well, you know, the rich, home-owning, millionaire NIMBY ladies of NOPNA (the number one homeowner’s association in the Western Addition) had steam coming out of their ears a few years back when they realized how hopeless their plan of keeping Tar-ghey from infecting their “NoPA” neighborhood was becoming.

Good times.

Oh well.

Mervyn’s Heights is now Target Tor and NoPA (North of the Panhandle) is now SoTA (South of Target). See?

Lots of produce here – a surprising amount.

And the amount of traffic is up, way up. Just like people said would happen. We’ll have to see how things shake out. I myself saw a fender bender on Masonic that prolly wouldn’t have occurred but for the Target Grand Opening yesterday.

Oh, and the traffic lights have been jiggered with, for better or worse. These days, peds at Masonic and Anza need to wait for a looong red light and then after that they need to wait for southbound traffic to turn left. In effect, the peds are going “last.” This kind of thing was considered unacceptable by the SFBC down at Masonic and Fell not too long ago. Mmmm…

Anyway, I can’t figure why some chain stores in SF are good and others are bad – I can’t find consistency in Planning is what Im saying,
