What It’s Like for a 16-Year-Old to Turn the Wrong Way onto Turk and Cause an Accident in Front of Northern Station

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2015

It’s like this, or one assumes.

Northbound Corolla on Fillmore turns right onto Turk, but Turk’s a one-way the other way in the Western Addition. So BAM into a Prius C. And yes, that’s Northern Station in the background. And I’m guessing about the 16 year old part, but you tell me, Gentle Reader. (I’ll tell you, one time I crashed into a 16 year old’s Honda at Mcallister and Gough. He was driving an Accord older than him when he decided to make his own turn lane onto Gough. He asked if I could do him a solid by not reporting this incident to anyone. I was like, “Yeah, right.” Then I told the SFPD to leave after some people called 911. So then I rode over to SFGH with my left arm held straight down since it wasn’t bending at that point. So then I gave up on SFGH after about five minutes. So then I made it home and then over to St Mary’s. By this point I was holding my arm at a 90 degree angle ’cause it wouldn’t go straight anymore – this caused problems for the X-ray tech. So then I had to go to a meeting in the Marina for the proposed Fisher Family Modern Museum. So then I went back to St Mary’s for the results. The upshot is that my left elbow, to this day, still quietly clicks when I flex it, depending on which direction my wrist is facing, but the 16 year old’s insurance policy paid St Mary’s and I ended up with a few thousands for my trouble. Basically, I sold my 100% good elbow for a 99% good elbow, and it took about ten hours out of my life. That’s what I think about when I think about 16 year olds causing accidents in the Western Addition. But I digress…)

Or you could call this “traffic violence,” but I don’t.

One time, a Dude headed to the West Side hit my Toyota and it looked better than these cars and I thought it was totally driveable but it wasn’t and my estimate ended up being $18K(!), oh well. This is definitely a reportable accident even without injuries – this is no way to start your Driving Life:

And yes, the Prius driver was NOT AT FAULT – I’m as shocked as you are.

Anyway, let’s be careful out there.

The Never-Ending Vigil: Falun Gong vs. the Chinese Consulate on Geary – Continuing Rain or Shine

Friday, December 5th, 2014

Here’s how things look on Geary during our recent rains…

…and here’s a 14 year old San Jose Mercury News report on the same group at the same location:

They’ve become part of the landscape on Geary and Laguna. Every morning they wave and say, “Good morning,” to the San Francisco police officer on duty, Xu said. Every evening, they say, “Good night.” They are so familiar with the postal carrier they know when a substitute is walking the route and greet both warmly.

Across the street, a San Francisco police officer sits in his vehicle, reading a paper. The cops hardly think a dozen old people and mothers with kids in tow are a threat to the People’s Republic of China, but as a matter of policy, the police dispatch an officer whenever there is a demonstration in front of the consulate.

The officer on the scene may change, but one keeps in contact with the protesters and the consulate: officer Jeff Roth, the event coordinator at Northern Station, which handles more than a few consulates because the district straddles the Western Addition, Pacific Heights and the Marina.

“They aren’t happy about it, but they don’t really have a say in the matter,” Roth said of the consulate officials.

Other protests — over Tibet and the like — have brought requests from the consulate in the past for police to stop protesters, Roth said. “We’ve explained, ‘Yes, the consulate is Chinese property, but this is America — the protesters have their First Amendment rights.'”

I’ll tell you, it’s not my habit to repost SJMN articles, but this one appears to have gone missing. If somebody can find an official link, please send it my way, by all means. (I hope it’s archived somewhere – it’s a bit surprising to me how it’s been lost in the sands of time after just 14 years.

In the meantime, this is my best guess as to how this article appeared back at the turn of the century:

Are You Obligated to Tell Out-Of-Town Visitors to Not Leave Anything in Parked Cars? Yes, Of Course – This is San Francisco

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

I tell everybody who comes to town.

It’s my obligation.

Now, let’s hear from Northern Station SFPD Police Captain Ann Mannix:

I just looked at our most recent crime stats and, no surprise to me, auto break-ins are up yet again… Help us out by taking anything valuable out of your car and encourage others to do so as well, especially your out-of-town visitors.”

Indeed.

Walking on, walking on broken glass in the Golden Gate Park Panhandle:

Armed Robbery: Why You Shouldn’t Use Your iPhone at Haight and Webster While Waiting for MUNI at 4:00 PM

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Cause somebody will pull out a gun and steal it from you.

Let’s check the story from Ann Mannix, SFPD Captain of Northern Station:

Yesterday a guy was waiting for the bus at Haight and Webster (4:15 PM) looking at his phone not paying attention to his surroundings when someone walked right up on him, pointed a gun and stole his iPhone 4.

I bet if he was aware of his surroundings the criminal wouldn’t have targeted him.

Conceal your valuables and be aware of your surroundings, always!”

Apparently, this isn’t a good place to try to hold onto your cellie.

Oh well.

Lower Haight is For Lovers…

…and armed cell phone thieves.

Your Police Station’s Daily Overnight Crime-Accident Update: Available on the Twitter These Days, Probably

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Does your police station/area Captain/area Commander have its/his/her very own Twitter feed these days? If not, why not?

This is how the Richmond District Police Station does it, for example:

3/24@1115PM Victim on 38 Geary bus fell asleep listening to iPhone. She woke up when her music stopped. 4 perps took the phone & fled*

3/25@658AM Fulton@Park Presidio-car making right turn struck pedestrian in the X-walk. Ped taken to hospital by ambulance.

Now of course, there are others who got going last year and before, like Captain Ann Mannix in the Western Addition.

What about your police station? What’s it Twitter?

Geary Boulevard, the No Left Turn world champ:

What’s that, you don’t have a Twitter feed available for your area?

Well, why not? Ask for one, if you want.

*Or get a Microsoft Zune HD instead for like $100 –  nobody will try to steal it, I can guarantee you that.

Pithy Advice From an SFPD Captain: “If You are a Victim of Crime, Remember the Suspect’s Shoes.” Here’s Why

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Here’s the latest Tweet from Northern Station Captain Ann Mannix:

“If you are a victim of crime, remember the suspect’s shoes, they always change their clothes, never their shoes.”

Sounds like Good Advices to me.

And the zipper on the left elevator pump had a tag, but not the one on the right, and….

Northern Station Police Captain Advises Not to Walk the Western Addition While Staring at a Cell Phone – Recent Robberies

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Here are the latest Twitterings from Northern Station Captain Ann Mannix:

Just read 4 street robbery reports from the weekend and every victim had their cell phones in their hands…conceal your cell”

So don’t be like this: Really.

Here’s how Amici’s East Coast Pizzeria defines the Western Addition, apparently. Rather a small piece of real estate compared with my version of what constitutes the Western A:

[UPDATE: Perhaps some of the perps have been arrested. Joe Eskenazi has the deets]

You ever just drive around the Western Addition with your buds in a white minivan and then rob people all night long?

Well, you’re not alone, per Captain Ann Mannix, the Resident Tweeter of Northern Station.
