“Yesterday afternoon I was assaulted by 5-6 young men on Sixth and Natoma in the Tenderloin. In broad daylight they surrounded me, tried and failed to grab my wallet, phone and backpack but made off with my 1999 green Cannondale road bike. I’ve attached a picture of a similar bike though mine had traditional silver rims and a black Terry saddle. If you see this bike for sale on craigslist or anywhere around San Francisco/Oakland please call the police immediately. They are aware of this group and, frankly, are fed up with this bullshit.
If you were involved in the violent, cowardly mugging on Monday August 20th you have not gained much. I am in good health and will pursue this until justice is served. These actions bring digrace on your families, community, and the city of San Francisco. My only regret is that I didn’t land another kick when the SIX of you had me pinned in the street.”

But late last month it evaporated into nothingness, into a simple jail term.
So, you can booze it up at world-famous Kokkari restaurant, run over a German tourist despite your gf yelling at you to look out, get out of the car to move the German tourist’s bike off of the road (no, not him himself, just the bike, you leave the dude himself to die), get back into the car after switching seats with the gf, and then drive away, and your punishment, years later, will be, what six months, eight months, in county jail because that’s what District Attorney George Gascon is willing to sign off on. No trial, no nothing, just a plea deal.
So what would Joshua Calder have gotten without the hitting and the running and the seat switching? Three months? Community service?
Mmmm….

Come to San Francisco, Buy a Used Town Car, and Then Start Picking Up Passengers Like a Cabbie – Here’s How to Do It

1. We regulate taxi rates so drivers won’t exploit tourists and other disadvantaged souls. (Oh, you’re a rich tourist and you’re lost and your flight leaves in an hour? $200 to SFO, take it or leave it – that kind of thing.)
2. But we limit the number of cabs on the streets to help out the drivers.
3. So much so, that buying a used Lincoln Town car and illegally picking people up off of the streets after quoting exorbitant rates is a good way to score some quick cash.
4. And, the SFPD has other fish to fry and the SFMTA isn’t really focused on this issue, so we’re back to square one, with unregulated “taxi” drivers exploiting tourists and other disadvantaged souls. Oh well.
As here. These bidnessmen were trying to flag down some Yellow Cabs, but those were all full, so next come the Black Town Cars. The first one quotes a price through the door, as seen here:

No dice. (What did the illegal cabbie ask for – $50 to go to Union Square? Something like that.)
And then another one pulls up and then another one, which ends up picking up these dudes and whisking them away. All the while, the bidnessmen were trying to flag down a real taxi.

Note the City of Oakland taxi cruising up the street empty – that’s agin the rules too, as Oakland taxis aren’t allowed to pick up people in the 415.
Now you might not see this too much on a Tuesday night, but on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, it’s Katie Bar The Door out there.
This is the situation.
However, the single-party state of San Francisco is incapable of addressing this particular situation.
Oh well.

More seriously, what happened to all of Mayor Quan’s quotes from KCBS in yesterday’s San Francisco Chronicle? I can’t figure it out, but, anyway, and for the record, from the (sometimes) Paper of Record, here’s what’s been saved from the Memory Hole:
“Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said today that she is going to call national leaders of the Occupy Wall Street movement and implore them to disown Oakland’s protest movement.
“I plan to call some of the national leadership of Occupy this week to say that the Oakland group is not nonviolent and has not agreed to be nonviolent,” Quan said in an interview on KCBS. “The national Occupy movement has said they are nonviolent.”

Rachel Lederman, a civil rights lawyer based in San Francisco who is working with the Occupy movement, said police have overreacted and have used excessive force, creating “an increasing level of confrontation with Occupy Oakland over the past several months” and that officers on Saturday had boxed in peaceful protesters.
She said some protesters had carried shields with them because “these young people have felt the need to protect themselves when they’re likely to be shot with so-called less-than-lethal projectiles.”

“What they are doing against the city economically is not nonviolent either,” she (Quan) continued on KCBS. “Every Saturday they are doing demonstrations and in my city that is my night of highest police need. They are taking away resources from my city and creating a situation that is making it more difficult for me to keep the city safer.”

“Well you guys used tear gas and batons too,” Quan said, referring to San Francisco. “I think it is a different time, I think it is how the media plays it. There is also probably a little misogyny and a little racism, when I looked at what happened in terms of how the national media portrayed it, and how Occupy’s internal media portrayed it.”
