Magazines suck these days, right kids? Oh, wait a sec, maybe not. That’s the message coming out of the ”4A’s [AAAA, the American Association of Advertising Agencies] Leadership / Media Conference“ that kicked off yesterday at the San Francisco Hilton Union Square. Check it:
“The leaders of five major magazine companies—Charles H. Townsend, Condé Nast; Cathie Black, Hearst Magazines; Jack Griffin, Meredith Corporation; Ann Moore, Time Inc.; and Jann Wenner, Wenner Media—today jointly announced the launch of one of the largest print advertising campaigns ever created to promote the vitality of magazines as a medium.”
O.K. then. Here’s the campaign logo – how many fonts from different mags do you recognize? Hint: “Es” is from Esquire (but even I knew that. I got the “M” and the “g” right as well, but everything else…)

Y&R NY made a clever graphic, I’ll give you that. But whenever you hear a Betty harshing on a Veronica, you start to think that the Betty is playing a losing game. For example, how bon are these mots?
“We Surf the Internet. We Swim in Magazines.”
“Will the Internet Kill Magazines? Did Instant Coffee Kill Coffee?”
Oh well. Look forward to seeing this ad in a few months:

Let’s see here, the TasteTV Network is going to put on the “TASTY Awards Show” at the Sundance Kabuki in Japantown on Thursday, January 14th, 2010. It will be:
“…the most exciting and prestigious event ever to celebrate food and fashion programs on television, in film, and online.”
O.K. then. But why food and fashion together?
“The viewer appetite and response to food and style programs has surged over recent years, making them some of the highest watched video content. The TASTY AWARDS spotlight the year’s best achievements in food and fashion programs on television, in film, and on the web.”
All right, now I’m on the trolley. But who’s going to be the draw? Well it’ll be hosted by Zane Lamprey, who will introduce to the crowd:
Tyler Florence (Food Network), Joanne Weir (PBS), G. Garvin (TV One), Tanya Holland (Food Network), Leslie Sbrocco (PBS), Gary Vaynerchuk (Wine Library TV), Marcy Smothers (Radio), Novella Carpenter (Author), Anita Chu (Author), Dominique Crenn (Food Network – Next Iron Chef)), Brian Solis (New Media Guru), Marissa Churchill (Bravo, Top Chef)
OMG, it’s Tyler!

He’ll be there. And who could get awards whether they show up or not? Well, for starters, how about toothy Giada De Laurentiis?

You can’t beat that. And there’ll be some VIP after-party at the New People Building down the street. Are you all a Twitter yet? (NB: They”ll have lots o’ chocolate.)
The deets, after the jump.

OMG it’s here, it’s finally here! On the heels of the new Bay Area Blog and Bay Area Edition from the New York Times comes the Wall Street Journal ’s expanded entry into the San Francisco Bay Area market.
Let’s see here, bay areans now have our own webpage at wsj.com and we also have OneSpot - “San Francisco Stories from Around the Web.” And those pages point you to local content, such as this outrageous, 900+ pixel wide photo essay about Haight Ashbury. (Dig the crazy colors, man.)

Give us More, I say. Hang those who talk of less.
All right. Expect good things.
Bon courage, WSJ!

Illinois Sheriff Tom Dart’s ridiculous lawsuit against craigslist inspired a press release today from craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster. Read it below.
While the the lawsuit from Thomas Dart, Esq. was getting laughed at across the country, founder Craig Newmark himself found time to note the issue on his personal blog. On it goes…
The message of day - Craig Newmark is NOT a pimp:

San Franciscans, brace yourselves for a brand new “online newspaper” – the SF Appeal, or sfappeal, something like that. It’s still on the pad, in “pre-launch” as they say, but that shouldn’t stop you from heading over to Twitter (which is totally pwning the first quarter of 2009, getting all kinds of national attention, non?) and finding out how to sneak a peek at a new source of news.
See?

Who will you find over there? Lots of familiar names.
Take a look and see, why don’t you?

What’s the deal with Chicago lawyers filing lawsuits against the Craigslist? Sometimes it seems every problem that Cook County has can be traced to San Francisco’s famous 25-employee private corporation. For example, a few years back the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law, Inc. got slapped back by the court system. (Listen to the black box tapes of their lawsuit going down in flames here.) But today brings news of another Midwestern pettifogger going after the CL.
Comes now career politician Tom Dart, who is using his elected position as Sheriff of Cook County to file a ridiculous lawsuit against craigslist over prostitution advertising. Did Chicago prostitutes use other kinds of media before the creation of craigslist? Why yes. And as a matter of fact, the Chicago Reader newspaper (a free weekly like the Bay Guardian and SF Weekly) is making money right now today with erotic services ads (as are the aforementioned Bay Guardian and SF Weekly, of course). Let’s take a look at a few of today’s ads sitting in newsboxes right outside the Sheriff’s office:

So what’s the difference between the Chicago Reader and craigslist?
Is Thomas Dart still promoting his craigslist boycott? Good luck with that and all. I mean, that stands a better chance of working than this lawsuit. I mean really, is Craig’s list “a source” of prostitution?
But why would this elected sheriff/lawyer want to go out of town to pick on cragslist? Perhaps he wins even if/when his lawsuit fails? Anyway, his press conference is starting now, noon Central Standard Time. Let’s give him a chance to make his case and pretend it has a ghost of a chance of succeeding.
Make sure to pay attention to him - he really enjoys all the attention.
UPDATE: Valleywag just posted a bit along the same vein.
UPDATE #2: Per Mr. Dart, craigslist is not passive, but is actually “actively involved” with prostitution.
Like this? Artist’s conception of how Mr. Dart views Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist:

How far will Mr. Dart, Esq. push this? Will he end up getting sanctioned by the courts?
Stay tuned.
