Well, as always, You Make The Call. Hey, why not show up for the FREE SFO T2 Community Open House on Saturday, April 9th, 2011 and decide for yourself.

As you might have expected, Inside Scoop’s Paolo Lucchesi is all over the food sitch at our new T2. All’s I can say is that it all should be pretty pricey, but, prove me wrong, SFO, prove me wrong.

Now, leaving aside the big picture of labeling anything to do with jet travel sustainable,* I’m a little baffled as to how a “cage-free” egg is a “sustainable” egg, but oh well.

Concessions Program

The airport expects its food and beverage tenants to provide sustainable food to the greatest extent possible.  Expectations include using:
  • organic, local products
  • organic or natural meats
  • rBST-free dairy products
  • cage-free antibiotic eggs
  • sustainable seafood
  • fairly traded organic coffee
  • non-modified agricultural products
  • no artificial color, flavor or additives
  • non-hydrogenated oils
  • biodegradable to-go containers and utensils
  • compostable bio-resin or paper bottles for water
  • low- or no-phosphate detergents.

As with other tenants, SFO’s concession tenants are encouraged to use green building materials for their facilities and will be required to recycle and compost.”

O.K. fine.

I don’t know, I’m used to hearing all this overblown stuff from SFO. So it’s like yes, SFO  was ready for the long-delayed Airbus A380 superjumbo, but so what. And yes, Lufthansa will soon be using an A380 from Frankfurt daily, but it burns more fuel than the Boeing 747 it’s replacing, right? Well, the Mayor’s Office and SFO both reported that one wrong. Oh and then QANTAS was supposed to start flying A380s in and out of Millbrae, but, instead, they’re going to bug out of NorCal entirely due to a little corporate welfare (like 3 mil., something like that) from Texas, so maybe the Mayor’s Office and SFO were, once again, wrong/insanely optimistic about that as well?

Remembering when the T2 construction site was a vast ocean of free parking. Good times.

(Man, are they still flying three-decade-out-of-production DC9′s out of SFO? Or that’s a baby McDonnell Douglas MD-80 in the upper left? Can’t tell. No matter, flying dinosaurs they are regardless.)

So, we had a Terminal 2, then we shut it down, and now we’re opening it again. O.K.

Meh.

Make that super-meh.

*Cheap international air travel using relatively cheap dino-juice is “sustainable?” Really? And instead of bringing food to the people, ’cause that’s unsustainable ‘n stuff, we’re bringing people to the food?

Debut of Fort Mason Center Farmer’s Market a Huge Success – Popular, If a Bit Pricey

The Fort Mason Center Farmers’ Market kicked off yesterday and it’s already on the Yelp, believe it or not. A good time was had by all.

San Francisco’s West Coast Chicken Cooking Contest Coming September 2010. Enter Now

Submit your recipe by June 30th, 2010 and you just might win the First Annual Foster Farms West Coast Chicken Cooking Contest in San Francisco come September. Do it for the lulz but mind the red tape:

“The contest is open to all California, Oregon and Washington residents over the age of 18. Contestants are encouraged to submit their unique chicken recipes featuring fresh Foster Farms chicken and local ingredients, wherever possible. Entries will be judged by members of the food media and culinary professionals. Jerry Brown Throws Down: Organic Cigarettes Might Not Be a Healthy Choice for You

Our California Attorney General Jerry Brown can’t abide you smokers out there thinkingorganic” cigarettes from American Spirit are better for you than other cigarettes. So he just cut a deal with the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company affacting how these ciggies will get marketed in California. Deets below.

Brown Secures Agreement with American Spirit Cigarettes Maker over Misleading Marketing of Organic Tobacco Products

Los Angeles-Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced that his office has secured an agreement with Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, Inc., the manufacturer of American Spirit tobacco products, that requires the company to clearly disclose that its organic tobacco is “no safer or healthier” than other tobacco products.

Attorneys general from 32 other states and the District of Columbia signed onto today’s agreement.

Stamping an organic label on tobacco products is ultimately a distinction without a difference-organic or not, cigarettes are bad for your health,” Brown said. “Today’s settlement with Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company ensures that all future advertisements make it clear that organic tobacco is no safer or healthier.”

Get Tiny Organic Hot Dogs at Tiny Underdog in the Sunset District

Well, here’s tiny Yelp-rated Underdog, the Organic Sausage Joint at 1634 Irving St (near 17th Avenue) in the Sunset District’s Middle Fog Belt. Things haven’t changed too much since its debut in 2007, when these photos were taken.

Underdog pleasantly fires the synapses of UCSF pharmacy students and lots of others as well.

But how about you? Just like Spork restaurant, you owe it to yourself to check it out just once. It’s a little pricey, but very unique.

Slow Food Nation Ends, But the Victory Garden Lives On

The Victory Garden at San Francisco’s Civic Center has a new lease on life due to today’s mayoral reprieve:

Today Mayor Gavin Newsom announced his intention to keep the Slow Food Nation Victory Garden at Civic Center Plaza in place until November. The garden was originally scheduled to be disassembled and moved to a more permanent location on September 21, three weeks after the conclusion of Slow Food Nation.”

Now the whole idea of this garden smacked of Marie Antoinette’s L’Hameau de la Reine from the get-go and the fact it was supposed to be undone in September was met with some criticism, but having this thing around for another three months seems like a good idea.

Of course SFN was well-attended, with lots of coverage from the New York Times, Wall Street JournalSFGate and Eater SF.

Now on with the show.

This voter registerer got cuffed by a Park Ranger right next to the Civic Center Windmill. Some rich hippies took offense and questioned the necessity of this detention. Apparently, the very same man was asked to leave SFN just the day before.

People, people, people, have you no respect for the DPT? Just one Parking Control Officer had the opportunity to issue scores of tickets to those in too much of a hurry to get to Slow Food Nation. It’s as easy as (slow) pie to park for free all day in this area.
