Botox Mom Doesn’t Live in San Francisco, Despite “Published Reports” to the Contrary – Also, Nobody Ate My Hamster

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

[UPDATE: All right, well then tell me where. You need somebody to cross-examine the woman who gave birth eight years ago at 26 with a husband who was like 80, per the Sun? I can do that. Just show me where that suddenly-shy news hound is and I'll go ask her. (Oh, and I'll need some cash for her interview fee, if she demands one - hey, did she get anything from the Sun? Mmmmm...) And she's entered her daughter into beauty pageants, like plural? In San Francisco? In California? Those pageants that have no presence on the Internet in this day and age? And do beauty pageant stage moms really use botox, that's like a technique IRL?]

Let’s see here, does “Botox Mom” Kerry Campbell live in any of the 47 square miles of San Francisco?

Noooope!

And yet:

According to published reports, Campbell lived in Birmingham, England, and recently moved to San Francisco.”

Let’s see here, who published these reports?

The Sun:

Now, did somebody make a live hamster sandwich and then eat it in England?

Nope, the reporter made it up.

And yet, that’s a “published report”  in the Sun as well.

Oh well.

2011 San Francisco Chinese New Year’s Parade a Huge Success, Despite the Rain – Photos From David Yu

Monday, February 21st, 2011

(My Canon 1D Mark Whatever SLR died an early death at 140,000 clicks* possibly due to the fact that I wasn’t ascared of a little (or a lot) of rain. Nowadays I’m def. skittish, but no matter,) you can always count on famous photographer David Yu to be on the scene rain or dry.

As he was last Saturday night in Chinatown and North Beach and SoMA and the Financh and all over.

Check out his gallery of Year of the Rabbit festivities, why not?

Bunnies!

David Yu

Whoahhh Bundy!

David Yu

SuperLotto? No thanks! But SuperLotto PLUS? Sounds intriguing…

And look who else was there – it’s your newly-minted Supervisor Malia Cohen:

(Yowser)

And your just-as-newly-minted Mayor Edwin Lee in the official San Francisco staff car, formerly used by General Burkhalter:

See you next year! (In scary, scary 2012, the year of the Dragon.)

*200,000 was the expected number of clicks I believe I was owed. ($300 minimum for a new shutter.) OTOH, my 5D Mark I has probably already exceeded its expected shutter life so I s’pose I shouldn’t complain too much. Living on borrowed time tho.

Japantown Lantern Parade Festival and Bon Odori Dance 2010 a Huge Success

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Yeasterday’s Lantern Parade Festival and Bon Odori Dance in Japantown was well-attended. Here’s some video and  here’s the dragon, courtesy of the SFNoobs.

Now, I didn’t stick around for nightfall, but here’s what things looked like early on, under the pouring sun.

The parade coming…

…and going:

People were encouraged to wave their hands in the air like they just didn’t care. (Note Retail for Lease sign in background.)

And here comes the queen and court for the Cherry Blossom Festival Queen Program 2010

Amd here’s what people were carrying:

And here’s the only pol that I saw, Emily Murase. She’s running for the San Francisco Board of Education in November:

All this was taken in by a (mostly) enthusiastic crowd:

Takko, the garlic capital of  Japan, sounds like my kind of town:

People were dusting off their summery yukata to join in:

See you next year!

Sarah Liu Crowned Queen of the Miss Asian America Pageant at Palace of Fine Arts

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Photographer David Yu took his gear up to the Palace of Fine Arts yesterday to capture the 25th Annual Miss Asian America Pageant. Can you see all the color in his set?

And here’s a first-hand report from Rose Chung‘s extravaganza:

Everyone was super gorgeous. There were plenty of attractive young women, and a surprising amount of attractive young men. Everywhere I looked it was like eyecandy overload. I was very happy. Very very happy.”

O.K. then. Here’s part of David Yu’s gallery:

Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! It’s Rose Chung’s 25th Annual Miss Asian America Pageant

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Word comes from photographer David Yu that the 25th Annual Miss Asian America Pageant is coming August 7th. It’s up at the monstrously large Palace of Fine Arts, so there are still tickets on sale.

Give me a W! That stands for Welcome to the Pageant:

You want pageantry and color?

As stated, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday.

“History:

“Founded by Rose Chung, the Miss Asian America Pageant has been the premier event in Asian American community for the past two decades and the longest running Asian American pageant in the United States. From our humble beginnings in 1985 with the Asian American Arts Festival, our event has expanded to an internationally recognized event with regional competitions nationwide.

The Face of Asian America
Today, the Miss Asian America Pageant continues its active participation in nationwide events. From our partnership with the American Legion, the nation’s largest veteran’s organization, to our participation in America’s largest Chinese New Year celebration held in San Francisco annually, the pageant continues its positive representation of the Asian American community.

The Heart of Asian America
Celebrating, Beauty, Elegance, and Culture, the Miss Asian America Pageant is proud to have contributed thousands to community causes and continues to be one of the largest scholarship providers for Asian American women nationwide.  Proceeds from the event have been donated to Asian Perinatal Advocates, a nationally recognized child abuse/domestic violence prevention program and most recently, all event merchandise sales have benefited the Stanford University Asian Liver Center in an effort to fight Hepatitis B in the Asian American community.

The Future of Asian America
The pageant has seen through almost 500 contestants in its program and is proud of its titleholders. Mona Lee Locke (Miss Asian America 1986) went on to a successful journalism career and became First Lady of the State of Washington. Gwendoline Yeo (Miss Asian America 1995) has starred in JAG, NYPD Blue, OC, and 24. Amrapali Ambegaokar(Miss Asian California 1999) is an accomplished Cirque du Soleil dancer. We pride ourselves in shaping the leaders of Asian America.
