Even with a Landing Signal Officer (like what an nuclear aircraft carrier has) and two lanes of dedicated parking, this $20k-per-year preschool in the Western Addition can’t manage its traffic.

Oh well.
Actor Vince Vaughn plays an engine designer in Ron Howard’s upcoming film called The Dilemma, O.K. fine. But people are upset at the following line, uttered when the Vince Vaughn character makes a pitch to a car company:
“Electric cars are gay. I mean not homosexual gay, but, you know, my-parents-are-chaperoning-the-dance gay.”
Well, GLAAD wasn’t happy about that, so Universal Pictures yanked these lines from the trailer promoting the movie.
Except in San Francisco, where they didn’t. So, the Metreon Theatre, as of yesterday, still uses the original trailer with the offending line intact.
So much for the promises of Hollywood…

And speaking of broken promises coming out of Tinseltown, when are they going to get around to fixing the steps of Alta Plaza, you know, the ones that got damaged during the filming of What’s Up, Doc back in the 1970′s?
Maybe someday.
If your meal comes with a toy, then it could be affected by the Healthy Meal Incentive legislation that was introduced by Supervisor Eric Mar and co-sponsored by Board of Supervisors President David Chiu and Supervisor David Campos.
Here’s a summary of today’s bill:
“Supervisor Mar introduces Healthy Meal Incentive legislation, which sets nutritional standards for restaurant food that is accompanied by toys or other youth focused incentive items. This legislation is aimed at promoting healthy eating habits and to address issues related to childhood obesity. Fast food restaurants target children and youth by offering toys and other incentive items. The Healthy Meal Incentive legislation would encourage restaurants to provide healthier meal options. To provide an incentive item, meals must contain fruits and vegetables, not exceed 600 calories or 200 calories for a single food item and must not have beverages that have excessive fat or sugar.”
The kind of Happy Meal swag that would activate HMI:
And here’s the gritty nitty:
Well, there’s blowback already. They’re calling this legislation a “toy ban.”

Get up to speed on the Students First Initiative here and here, from “typically snarky” (really?) Melissa Griffin. O.K. then
Seems that the Chinese American Democratic Club is fully aboard this bandwagon. And to prove it, they’re going to have a little get-together out there in the Middle Sunset tomorrow at 11:30 AM.
All the deets about tomorrow’s joint:
“CADC Supports Students First”
A Press Conference on the signature gathering in support of Students First will be held on July 2nd 2010, 11:30am at Irving St and 18l Ave (Corner of Jefferson Elementary School).
Students First is a parents’ group formed in response to the proposed Student Assignment System approved by the Board of Education on March 8, 2010. The goal is to place an advisory (not legally binding) ballot measure for the November 2010 San Francisco ballot that will tell the Board of Education, loud and clear, that the voters of San Francisco demand Quality Neighborhood Schools For All.
“We are encouraged to see the support from parents from all community in particular Chinese families joining the Students First signature drive. We look forward to mounting a campaign to send a message to the School Board that neighborhood schools are important” says Michael Chan, President of CADC. “The African American population and Asian American population form the majority of Bayview/Hunter’s Point. It is imperative we stand together to build this community and the foundation of any community is quality neighborhood schools that serves every member of our community.”
“When I was on the School Board, I did not think the School District and the School Superintendent seriously listened and done enough to refine the admission process.” Says Eddie Chin, a former Commissioner to the San Francisco Board of Education.”

Magazines suck these days, right kids? Oh, wait a sec, maybe not. That’s the message coming out of the ”4A’s [AAAA, the American Association of Advertising Agencies] Leadership / Media Conference“ that kicked off yesterday at the San Francisco Hilton Union Square. Check it:
“The leaders of five major magazine companies—Charles H. Townsend, Condé Nast; Cathie Black, Hearst Magazines; Jack Griffin, Meredith Corporation; Ann Moore, Time Inc.; and Jann Wenner, Wenner Media—today jointly announced the launch of one of the largest print advertising campaigns ever created to promote the vitality of magazines as a medium.”
O.K. then. Here’s the campaign logo – how many fonts from different mags do you recognize? Hint: “Es” is from Esquire (but even I knew that. I got the “M” and the “g” right as well, but everything else…)
Y&R NY made a clever graphic, I’ll give you that. But whenever you hear a Betty harshing on a Veronica, you start to think that the Betty is playing a losing game. For example, how bon are these mots?

“Will the Internet Kill Magazines? Did Instant Coffee Kill Coffee?”

Calling All Proud Parents: Gap Searches for the New Faces of babyGap and GapKids With Its Fourth Annual Casting Call Contest
Gap Teams Up with Disney Family.com for a Nationwide Search to Find America’s Brightest Personalities and Most Adorable Young Faces
Gap’s nationwide search for babies and kids with a twinkle in their eye, charm in their smile and an expressive personality to match has officially started. Today Gap launched its fourth annual Gap Casting Call, a nationwide contest to find the next faces of babyGap and GapKids. This year, Gap is teaming up with online parenting site, Disney Family.com, offering phenomenal prizes and more chances to win with its first-ever America’s Fan Favorite and Voters’ Sweepstakes awards.
“Casting Call is one of our favorite programs and this year we want to make it bigger and better than ever,” said Pam Wallack, president of babyGap, GapKids and GapMaternity. “The contest is a unique and fun way for us to interact with our customers and their children and we are extremely excited to be partnering with Disney, a brand synonymous with not only families but also family entertainment, to enhance the program and add a little something special to this year’s Casting Call.”
How Casting Call Works:
Entry Phase: From Sept. 22 to Oct. 22, parents across the country can enter their child in the contest by visiting gap.com/castingcall to upload a photo of their baby (ages four and under) and kid (ages five to 10) for a chance to be featured in an upcoming babyGap or GapKids campaign in Feb. 2010.
The Finalists: Once the entry phase closes on Oct. 22, judges will narrow down the field to twenty finalists — 10 babies (five girls and five boys) for babyGap and 10 kids (five girls and five boys) for GapKids. The 20 finalists will be flown to San Francisco with their families to participate in an official Gap photo shoot and will receive prize packages, including a $500 Gap gift card and a deluxe Disney gift bag.
Voting Phase: On Dec. 7, the twenty finalists will be unveiled and voting will begin on gap.com/castingcall. It will then be up to America to decide the next faces of babyGap and GapKids for a 2010 campaign. Voters can vote once a day every day for babyGap [1 boy and 1 girl] and GapKids [1 boy and 1 girl]. And contestants won’t be the only ones with a chance to win great prizes. This year, Gap and Disney Family.com are offering a special Voter Sweepstakes. For each vote cast at gap.com/castingcall from Dec. 7 – Dec. 21, voters will be entered in a contest to win a weeklong Luxury Included Caribbean family vacation to Beaches Resorts in Turks and Caicos or Jamaica.
The Winners: Four children will be selected as winners of the Gap Casting Call — one baby girl and one baby boy for babyGap and one girl and one boy for GapKids. The winners will be featured in the windows of babyGap and GapKids stores from coast-to-coast and will receive other incredible prizes from Gap and Disney including a $1,000 Gap gift card and a Disney on Broadway package in New York or Las Vegas for a two-night VIP Lion King experience.
“In addition to inspiring great ideas for family life, Disney Family.com and Gap are now giving moms a chance to showcase the kids that make it all worthwhile,” said Emily Smith, vice president, Disney Online Mom and Family Portfolio.
Introducing the Fan Favorite Award:
For the first time in Casting Call history, Gap is introducing an award for America’s “Fan Favorite.” The lucky child who receives the most votes at gap.com/castingcall starting on Sept. 22 will win a weeklong Luxury Included Caribbean family vacation to Beaches Resorts in Turks and Caicos or Jamaica.
Fan Favorite voting runs from Sept. 22 through Nov. 17 and the winner will be announced on Dec. 7, along with the 20 finalists. To help get the word out, parents can leverage the power of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn, and good ole’ fashioned e-mail to help get votes for their adorable tot.
To help spread the word about their charismatic Casting Call contestant, parents can also create a “printable,” an adorable mini Gap shopping bag photo holder with arms and legs to showoff their aspiring model. When parents submit a photo of their child, they can opt to print out the printable character that sits on the edge of a table or desk and holds a “Vote for me” sign.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture called it quits today on the issue of spraying for the Light Brown Apple Moth. All of a sudden like.
The family that Stops the Spray together, stays together (or something like that).
This should be gratifying to Senator Carole Migden, who thinks, “Bay Area residents ought not to serve as guinea pigs and have their health jeopardized for an ill-conceived program and an unproven approach.”
The same with San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who says he’s, “glad CDFA appears to have accepted the inevitable.”
The bandwagon opposing aerial spraying for light brown apple moth eradication is gaining momentum.
Last night, San Francisco Supervisors Carmen Chu, Gerardo Sandoval, and Ross Mirkarimi, along with scientists, physicians and organic farmers, all addressed a standing-room-only crowd of hundreds at the Hall of Flowers in Strybing Arboretum.
Senator Carole Migden praises the efforts of the assembled experts.
