Well Look, Gannett Co Inc’s “The Bold Italic” Venture is Operating a _Paid_ Intern Program – But What About Before?

[UPDATE: IMO, The San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Examiner (and family) are conducting their intern programs properly. IMO, San Francisco Magazine is not. Those are the ones I’ve looked at.)

Here’s the current ad from TBI:

“Hello writers! Are you a Bold Italic fan looking to get on the other side of the screen with us? We’re looking for two social media-savvy bloggers interested in interning at The Bold Italic HQ (Hayes Valley, SF) for the fall season. The gig lasts four months (mid-August through December), and is for 3-5 days a week. And yes, we pay our interns ($15/hr). We can give you school credit if you need it.”

That appears to be fine, so it’s time to take TBI off of secret double unpaid intern probation.

But how did Gannett / the Bold Italic get on intern detention in the first place? Well, it was the offers of unpaid internships. You can see an example of one below. (It’s the sort of thing that can get a Fortune 500 chain store outlet like The Bold Italic sued, you know, for not paying at least the minimum wage.)

The Bold Italic is a website about local discovery in San Francisco. Our mission is to help people become better locals by equipping our members with rare intel, backstories, and potential adventures. The Bold Italic is a project of Gannett, the publishing company that owns USA Today and other media outlets.

Most recently our writers engaged in shooting guns, performing stand up comedy, working a day at a pot club, and getting hands-on lessons from a butcher – all right here in San Francisco.

We’re looking for a cracker-jack intern to help us inspire San Franciscans to interact with their city.

Duties to include:
– General office administrative duties.
– Helping to draft promotional material.
– Contributing ideas for editorial, publicity, and marketing projects.
– Assisting with events.
– Other duties assigned by the Producers and Merchant Relations staff.

Skills we are looking for:
– Strong familiarity with San Francisco.

– Detail oriented.
– Responsible and on time.
– Excellent communication skills; writing experience a plus.
– Social media savvy.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is looking to get involved with an online publication.

This is an unpaid 3-month internship, but we can offer hands-on experience and college credit.

Anyway, they’re not per se illegal from the get-go, and that’s so unlike a lot of Ron Conway*-type startups what litter the 415 these days, so they’ve got that going for them…

How to Deal With Hollywood Jackholes What STILL Haven’t Paid “Contagion” Film Extras Since February

Now it was a little funny earlier this year when a high level person at Rich King* Casting started quoting sub-minimum wages for extras in that new Contagion movie starring, I don’t know, everybody, you know, these people right here (and let’s throw in Famous Movie Director Steven Soderbergh too – he’s a luminary as well):

But then somebody, no not somebody from the local Film Commish and not any MSM reporters (who don’t seem to be aware of what the minimum wage is in the place where they live and work), but somebody up here in the 415 got word down to Los Angeles County about The Law ‘n stuff.

So fine, the RKC people changed their minds and decided to pay extras “$80″ for up to eight hours (and then they finally did the math and decided that $79.36 would be the wage, cause, you know, después de todos, dinero es dinero.)

But now word comes that RKC thinks it’s OK to pay people up to six weeks** later?

And the extras still haven’t all been paid?

And RKC is ignoring contact attempts from said extras?

Could all this be true?

Well let’s hear from a Real Life Contagion Extra:

“I got in the film as well, but its now mid April, and I have not seen the payment in the 6 weeks that the casting company stated. Got my work receipt right here – would be nice if someone from this casting agency would follow up with my contact attempts.

“It was still a really cool day either way. I got to see an amazing set up of the set @ Candlestick and didn’t mind standing/sitting around all day. That is what background extras do. All of these girls were being very rude that day saying “when are we going to meet the stars”, and “I can’t believe they are making us stand around”, and “come on! I wan’t to be in the movie already!! Shortly after one of the assistants heard those remarks, our group was dismissed for the afternoon. It is like they never listened to what they told us at the casting meeting at Fort Mason, or the information the casting directors told us over the phone when they offered us the part. I did not get an email confirmation after that day, but a personal phone call.

Would be nice to see my check, but I will give them a bit more time to respond since I bet the other 5,000 are hounding them as well. I mean come on – I am on unemployment – it would be nice to have the $79 bucks right now, but I can wait a bit”

Now, isn’t it ironic, dont’cha think, that a company what has a cavalier attitude about at least one kind of wage and hour rule would drag its feet about making payments? (Well, maybe not, in my experience.)

Anyway, all you non-union extras ought to form a union or something so you can start playing hardball with the Hollywood vanga vanga.

So why don’t you pay all your extras ASAP, Rich King Casting? Like posthaste or something.

*Forget about Obama’s birth certificate – I want to see the one with “Rich King” printed on it, and oh, Sandy Beach too, I want to see one of those as well – I think Hollywood still has a few guys around with that name.

Good News for You Extras Working Matt Damon’s “Contagion” Movie: You’re Getting a Pay Rise – Now, $80 Per Day

Turns out that you extras working on the local Contagion shoots are going to get $80 per working day instead of the $64 that Rich King Productions was talking about the other day.

Simply, the people at JKP were unaware that S.F. has its own minimum wage of $9.92 per hour.

Anyway they’re back down in Los Angeles now, but they’ve just sent a message to me how they going to pay $80 for starters and then more after the first eight hours, if necessary.

Break a leg!

[UPDATE: It's all good, hard-working extras. Just got the call from Down South about how you all are going to get at least $80 per working day. They were all apologetic, saying stuff like, "Thanks, you really saved our bacon on this one." Turns out that San Francisco County is the only place in the entire state what has a higher-than-CA min. wage.]  

That means that $64 ($8 times 8 hours) isn’t going to cut it, right?

Remember those “unfortunate,” “innocent” 18-year-old faux prostitutes in Chinatown from the time that horrible Trauma series came to the 415 all lies and jest? Those people got paid way more than $64 a day – it was close to $80. So why should you Contagion extras get paid any less?

Is it possible that Rich King* Casting doesn’t know the minimum wage in the area where it’s casting?

Yup!

Those playing hos back in ought-nine got paid minimum wage, so why not you?

Feel the excitement:

(And the beauty part is that there are “no fees to apply” Really? No fees to stand around for hours trying to get a gig that doesn’t pay minimum wage? Sweet, Thanks Rich King Casting.)

So, extras, practice this line: “I knows I gots to get paid!”

Start chanting all together and then your $64 paychecks will increase to $79.36 paychecks tout de suite.

Of course, if they take you to the East Bay or if they shoot on Federal land(?) in the 415, well then maybe you won’t get your full $9.92 per hour. But they’re talking about filming at Candlestick Park and Chinatown,** where San Francisco laws are in full effect.

In closing, these pretzels are making me thirsty!***

Filming starts on February 9th and goes through the 19th. Before shooting though, we will be coming to San Francisco to do an open casting call for those who may be interested in working on this film on Jan 29th and 30th. We are looking for Men and Women all shapes, sizes, types and ethnicities to be background performers for this feature.

We look forward to offering the opportunity for fun,exciting PAID work to San Francisco and Bay Area area residents. We will be casting lots of locals in the production.

GoogleCache Reveals SFPark Program No Longer Promising That “Drivers Will Love SFPark”

Remember back in the day, back when the SFPark website promised that “Drivers will love SFPark?” Well, I do, and so does the Google Cache, at least it does for now.

Anyway, below you can see the old SFPark homepage, the one that was up until just recently. (The word “love” is highlighted because that’s the search term I used to find it in the cache.) Click to expand:

Even without the highlighting, that phrase stood out as a boner. Why, for instance, would drivers “love” an extra 5000 parking meters on spaces that are currently free? How on Earth do drivers, in general, “benefit” from that?

But, as stated, that love language is gone now, so that’s a good thing. What’s left is a patronizing, cartoonish website with a patronizing, cartoonish video that talks about how a third of traffic (or something) in San Francisco is made up of people looking for parking.  That, of course, is fucking absurd. I’m sure that stat, employed using the passive voice, if you’d note, might be operational in Chinatown during New Year’s or in North Beach on any given Friday night, but otherwise, it’s fucking absurd.

And do people really all turn into agitated George Costanzas when they park, all raging at the machine? That’s what it’s like, IRL? Really? I’ll bet if you asked what people were thinking about when they’re parking you’d get all kinds of different answers.

But what about these despondent folks waiting for a #5 Fulton for an excessively long time? Could MUNI make a “whimsical video” about what’s on their minds?

(How about a dozen “MUNI sucks” thought bubbles? That would fit the bill.)

The primary beneficiaries of SFPark are those who make money directly off of the program- that includes people making the parking meters, people making commish off of selling the parking meters, people who design the cartoonish website, graphic designers, PR types, people like that. It was the same thing with MUNI’s Culturebus- these types of people make their money whether or not a program succeeds, whether or not a program lives on.

Basically, SFPark will allow the City to collect more money from parking meters. That’s good for some and it’s not good for others. It would be refreshing if the people at SFPark would acknowledge that. Why do they spend so much effort selling a program that’s already a done deal?

SFPark will allow the City to charge up to $18 per hour. That’s something that would be physically impossible with the typical, old-school, non-debit card meters that we’re used to dealing with. Can you imagine putting 72 quarters into a meter to park for one hour? (How often would it have to get emptied?)

Not that it’s not worth it for people to pay $18 per hour to park sometimes. I’m sure that there are lots who would love to pay whatever it takes to park on Columbus right in frontof their restaurant in North Beach on a Saturday night. The problem is that SFPark is going to charge $0 per hour to park in North Beach after 6:00 PM, AFAIK. So does that make sense?

But if  Uncle Sucker wants to pay us eight figures to set up this system, that’s its choice.  

Obviously, there will be winners and losers whenever a government institutes a new program like this, so it’d be nice not to have such a pollyannish, snow-job website.

Anyway, losing the “love” language is a slight improvement, so hurray for that.

Canvassing the Western Addition for the U.S. Census – Not a Bad Gig at $22 an Hour

Laboring in the 415 for the U.S. Census isn’t half-bad.

The workers make more than a mosquito abatement courier, anyway.

When you see them walking around, just yell out, “Go home, G-Man!” They’ll love it.

From 1790:

  1. Name of head of family
  2. Number of free white males 16 and up, including heads of families
  3. Number of free white males under 16
  4. Number of free white females including heads of families
  5. Number of all other free persons, except Indians not taxed
  6. Number of slaves

To 2010, things haven’t changed a whole bunch.

The census has been updated to reflect all the amendments to the U.S. Consitution of course, but things haven’t changed a whole bunch.

So, answer the door when your Census worker drops by, huh?

The U.S. Census Wants You – Collect Data in S.F., CA for $22 Per Hour

Ladies and gentlemen, I need not remind you that we’re in the throes of the Great Recession of 2008-20xx, but check it - the U.S. Census is hiring right now in the 415.

Now some poor melon farmers up in Oregon are going to be getting just $12 per hour. But you, you magnificent creature, you know The City like the back of your hand so you’re going to be getting 22 bones/hr. from Uncle Sucker starting in a few months, for a few months. What’s that? You don’t want to be knocking on doors pestering people? Well, the Feds are also looking for clerical workers, you know indoor work as opposed to “field work.” It’s totally wide open.

What’s that, you’re not a citizen? Well, that’s not going to help you, but it’s not a deal-breaker neither.  

Here’s what you do, you call up (415) 680-2020 and tell them your name, phone number and zip code. They’ll then tell you where to go for the next test, like tomorrow, Tuesday, January 5th, 2010 at 7:00PM.

The test is easy-peasy. Check it.

So, view the gritty nitty and start dialing – your temporary appointment with the Feds is about to begin!
