Look at this sad scene from Golden Gate Park yesterday. See all these people? They’ve been patiently waiting out in front of the California Academy of Sciences since just after the closing time of 5:00 P.M. The problem is that 5:00 P.M. is when the last Culturebus departs for the day.
However, los turistas don’t know that. I told some of them about the 44 O’Shaughnessy but that didn’t tempt them. They sort of knew about the 5 Fulton, but the closest stop is about 1000 feet away. The $7 fare - news of that is what it took to drive the bulk of them away from this bus stop.
The Euro-looking family held out hope as they could see a CB stopped at the other end of the Music Concourse but, for some odd reason, the schedule is set up to deliver people to the Cal Academy 40 minutes after closing time – it doesn’t accommodate anybody wanting to depart Golden Gate Park after 5:00 PM.
The poor devils, they’d be better off hailing a cab, if they could find one. Click to expand.
Now if I were a “courteous CultureBus operator” I’d feel obligated to take these people wherever they wanted to go in Union Square irregardless of the schedule. But that’s just me.
Could somebody put up “Fare: $7, last pickup at 5:00 PM” on this CultureBus bus stop sign?
Is that too much to ask?

We certainly could sense it in San Francisco, anyway, but it definitely was smaller than what occurred on March 30, 2009. No reports of injuries or damage so far. See the deets below. It felt very small in San Francisco. It felt “short and sharp” to those a mile away from the epicenter in the East Bay. At least one “weenie Texan” transplant “thought it was a five.” And Commenter Jane says “It felt like a big truck drove up the street in Point Richmond.”
Those in the State Building in San Francisco’s Civic Center probably didn’t feel a thing. Mayor Gavin Newsom would probably like to remind you about upgrading your “soft story” structure. And good thing City Attorney Dennis Herrera is Suing for Seismic Safety Upgrades at the Mirant Power Plant, right?

Your Presidio Trust has just announced another two Open House sessions concerning the Main Post. Make note of the location at Building 105, that Brokedown Palace (but I can assure you that parts of it are excellent). It’s sandwiched between Lincoln (no, not THAT Lincoln), Taylor (no, not THAT Taylor) and Montgomery (no, not THAT Montgomery). Just pop open the Google Map here. See? It’s right near where the Google Maps car got busted (or not, if you believe a certain U.S. Park Police Sargeant, who, really, oughta know).
Just get to the Building 104 Mouse House and then go downhill a skosh. There’s probably not going to be a program or anything – just drop by and yickety yack a bit…

As promised, the Presidio Trust Main Post Planning Transportation Workshop went off on April 22, 2009. Look here later on to see when and if two more similar meetings will occur in the very merry month of May. (The first should deal with historic resources and the other is slated to be a kind of catch-all open-mike night.)
122 souls sat through a presentation of answers to a dozen key questions that people have been asking about concerning transportation – signalization, fees for parking, traffic loads, etc. I vowed to leave as soon as the public speakers veered off-topic – that took about ten seconds, so oh well. Regardless, this appeared to be a more-productive-than-average public yammer session. Assemblymember Tom Ammiano sent a representative (the well-informed Noriko Shinzato) as did Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier, so it appears that interest in the plans for the Main Post remains strong.

Fully eleven Mercedes-Benzeses were out front, or in the lot up the hill, or in the overflow lot even further up the hill near the chapel. BMW was also well-repped, and there were a least three Porsches, including two expensive Porsche Cayenne minivans and one hepped-up Neunelfer.A richer group of parking-hungry NIMBYs would be hard to find. One bicycle.
All this Powerpoint stuff should be online in the near future, or maybe it already is.
Presidi-Go is already up to 300,000 trips per year.
Should the NIMBY’s, the people of means, be given more votes on this matter than tourists from Tempe? Only Time Will Tell.

The Presidio Trust has replaced the cancelled April 16 meeting with a Transportation Workshop at 6:30 PM on April 22, 2009. There will be an overview of the transit issues being analyzed through the Main Post planning process, and staff will be on hand to answer questions about transportation issues.

Well, Earth Hour was marked in San Francisco last night with a whole mess of people scrambling up Twin Peaks to see the lights go out at 8:30 PM. Some expected the whole city to go dark, but that’s not the way it works. This photo of the Bay Bridge from last year shows how things operate.

Now here’s the view from Twin Peaks just after 8:30 PM. City Hall is the black void at the bottom. You can see that the people at Pepsi, 505 Montgomery and the unnamed dome to the right got a late start on EH09 (assuming they participated at all). Click to expand:
