PWNED! Interim District Five Supervisor Christina Olague Gets NO ENDORSEMENT From Democratic Party

Wow. A supposed “leader” of the Run Ed Run Draft Ed Lee for Mayor movement, a person who was rewarded with a Supervisor position for selling out her progressive values, just got a big fat vote of NO CONFIDENCE last night, courtesy of the Democratic Party of San Francisco.

Though comprehensive official minutes of the DCCC’s special meeting at California State Office Building’s Milton Marks Auditorium will be forthcoming, member and committee reports included several updates on: the upcoming fall campaign; the hiring of a new executive director; current party finances and fundraising plans, including an event centered on President Obama’s nomination acceptance speech; voter registration; the redesigned party website and expanded communications efforts; and amending practices to meet many standards codified in the Brown Act and S.F. Sunshine Ordinance.  The DCCC also voted on a vendor for its fall slate card program.  

Public comments included numerous speakers advocating individually and on their organizations’ behalf for local candidates and measures; a monthly update on Organizing for America; concerns that the California Democratic Party endorsed Proposition 35 without consideration to official opponents and concerns from the sex worker community.  Two speakers called on DCCC members to address themselves to community concerns that policies governing the Castro’s Rainbow Flag do not comport with Presidential proclamations and other exigencies that merit lowering the flag to half-mast when appropriate.  

The lone new business item was a resolution passed by a majority of DCCC members that condemned inflammatory and offensive anti-Muslim advertising on Muni vehicles, and called on city officials and MTA authorities to change policies to prohibit such hate speech in the future.

Members John Rizzo and Hene Kelly closed the meeting by memorializing the late Milton Marks III, a highly regarded Community College Board member and former DCCC colleague, who passed away Aug. 9 at the age of 52.  The meeting was adjourned in Marks’s honor.

Committee reflects ‘unity and common purpose’ in 2012 to re-elect Obama, help Pelosi reclaim Speakership, and make a difference on key state ballot measures
SAN FRANCISCO (July 27, 2012) — California Democratic Party Chair John Burton administered the oath of office to the newly elected members of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee Wednesday night at the first general meeting of the local Democratic Party’s governing board following the June 5th Primary Election.  

Veteran Democratic activist Mary Jung was unanimously elected to serve as the San Francisco Democratic Party’s chair, and several DCCC members were elected to fill leadership roles that will be critical to the local party’s success heading into the November 2012 General Election.  Top priorities discussed at the public meeting include re-electing President Obama, returning the Speakership to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi by helping reclaim a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, and pushing to expand the number of Democratic voters citywide.

Other officers elected at the general meeting held at the California State Office Building’s Milton Marks Auditorium on Golden Gate Avenue are: First Vice-Chair (Finance) Zoe Dunning; Second Vice-Chair (Issues) Alix Rosenthal; Third Vice-Chair (Voter Registration) Trevor McNeil; Fourth Vice-Chair (Club Chartering and Development) Leah Pimentel; Recording Secretary Kat Anderson; Treasurer Tom Hsieh; Corresponding Secretary Matt Dorsey; and Parliamentarian Arlo Hale Smith.  Rafael Mandelman will serve on the DCCC’s Slate Card Committee along with the Chair and Treasurer.  A committee tasked with proposing party bylaw changes to incorporate requirements of the Ralph M. Brown Act, which assures public access and participation in local government public meetings, will include David Chiu, Arlo Hale Smith, Matt Dorsey and Hene Kelly.  That ad hoc committee will seek to fully harmonize local party bylaws with relevant provisions of state law to address concerns that the election of six members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to the DCCC may occasionally trigger Brown Act requirements. 

The committee also adopted two resolutions: one in support of placing AB 1648, a campaign finance reform measure known as the DISCLOSE Act, on the California ballot; and another expressing the Democratic Party’s support for City College of San Francisco.

Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting, who helped launch the group, praised the incredible dedication of so many San Franciscans who were willing to spend time addressing tough issues like better transportation, improving our schools, creating jobs and reforming city government.

“It’s time for San Francisco city government to be as creative and innovative as the rest of San Francisco. And it is going to take all of us to make that a reality,” Ting told the crowd of 250 gathered for the event billed as “Food for Thought.”

Phil Ting, who is a candidate for Mayor of San Francisco, summarized the mission ofReset San Francisco: “If politicians could solve our problems alone, we wouldn’t have so many pressing problems,” Ting said.

The participants split into work groups addressing such issues as transportation, education, tax reform, the environment, job creation and other topics. After nearly an hour of group discussion, the smaller groups reported back to the entire Reset San Francisco community on both key problems and possible solutions.

In the next week, the proceedings will be discussed online atwww.ResetSanFrancisco.org and the entire community will be able to vote online for which potential solutions to prioritize.

ResetSanFrancisco.org is an online organizing platform designed to give San Franciscans the tools and support they need to change city government. The community is scheduled to gather in person every month to help identify community issues and explore and implement solutions.

1. This was a “fun” event, in that the candidates’ names were pulled out of a snare drum and then they got time signals from a dinging triangle. A bit twee if you ask me, but it seemed apropropriate given the crowd and the nature of the event.

2. Speaking of which, there was a good turnout, with the lower level of Yoshi’s biggest room almost filled to capacity.

3. I understand how there needs to be a viability cutoff – I mean Big Entertainment would like all the candidates to swear fealty of course, but you can’t have 50 people on stage, right? (In a couple of years, we’ll have six races and who-knows-how-many candidates, right?) However, it’s not clear to me what the cutoff standards were. There were no candidates on stage from District Two, for instance. Presumably, leading viers Janet Reilly and Mark Farrell blew off the questionnaire, leaving that to Kat Anderson and Abraham Simmons. Now, both of them applied to The Recording Academy but neither wound up gracing the stage last night. Additionally, bona fide D6 candidate Anna Conda was left wondering what the deal is, man.

4. I left just after the intra-district candidate-on-candidate queries began. (Not sure what the point is of having a D6 candidate question one from D8 at last night’s love-fest, but whatever.) But as far as the intros (complete with musical accompaniment) were concerned, Malia Cohen was the standout. (She finished up way before the triangle had a chance to ding. Bonus.) Rafael Mandelman (Mandelman! Mandelman!) also did well, speaking naturally and name-checking The Death of Fun,* but, OTOH, Debra Walker seemed to be reading notes, as if at a high school debate. JMO.

Energy, energy, energy from Malia Cohen:

This is a new kind of deal for me, to see Big Entertainment take this approach. I’m thinking that this event will, as designed, affect how our Board of Supes deals with nightclubs and similar whatnots  in 2011 and 2012.

September 22nd D8 Debate & Endorsement Meeting

On Wednesday, September 22nd, SFYD will host it’s 3rd candidate debate for the four candidates vying for the hotly contested District 8 Supervisor seat.  We are honored to be co-hosting this event with our good friends from the Alice B. Toklas Democratic Club, and the Harvey Milk Democratic Club, as well as the Eureka Valley/Castro Neighborhood Association. 

The  candidate debate will be moderated by Melissa Griffin, the San Francisco Examiner’s irreverent political reporter, and will be streamed live on VidSF with commentary by Beth Spotwood, of CBS5′s Eye on Blogs and SFGate’s Culture Blog, and San Francisco Bay Times columnist, Pollo Del Mar

Community members will have the opportunity to meet candidates and join a coalition of neighbors and political junkies for an in depth discussion on the city budget, key district issues and the future of our city.

Now That Michela Alioto-Pier is Out of the District 2 Supe Race, Mark Farrell Emerges as the Interesting Candidate

Almost feel as if I owe our City Attorney Dennis J. Herrera (who is certainly on the list of the smartest pols in town)* an apology for thinking he was tilting at windmills by pursuing the whole Michela Alioto Pier appointed-to-a-term-of-more-than-two-years thing.**

Anywho, feel free to read all three press releases I just received on this matter.

Now, on to new bidness. What up, Mark Farrell? (He’s going house to house, door to door these days – see  Comments.) Is he the dark horse?

“As fundraising leaders, we have raised more than any other candidate in this race and have over 750 individual donors – half of which are in District 2 and San Francisco.”

O.K. then. Of course he lacks the official embrace from that “Politburo” known as the Central Committee (aka DCCC), ’cause Janet Reilly has that all locked-up lock, stock, and barrel. But who knows what will happen with this race. 

We’ll find out more at the next big debate emceed by Sweet Melissa Griffin. (You’d think they’d have one skedded soon…)

Now, as promised, the dueling press releases, starting with this classy and pithy bit from MAP herself:

“I believed and continued to believe that the intent of the voters as reflected in the plain language of our city charter allows me to run for second four year term.  While I am disappointed in the outcome, I of course respect the judicial process. I wouldn’t speculate on what they really meant, I wouldn’t guess and give them something sensible like 2%, I’d just give them exactly what they ordered. But that’s just me.

Huge Harvey Milk Candidate Meeting this Saturday, Bay Guardian Issues Endorsements

The powerful San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee is, once again, having elections come November. You’ll be confronted, once again, with a ballot that’s filled with a bunch of names, most of which you’ve never heard of, and the obligation to check off your dozen favorites.

If you want, you can head over to the intersection of Market and Octavia this Saturday, April 3, 2010 and then head into the the LGBT Center‘s Ceremonial Room from Noon to 5:00 PM. Then you’ll be able to see and hear some of the candidates for DCCC in 2010 address members of the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club.

They’ll all be answering a few questions from the crowd. (I don’t know if you need to be a member of the club to drop by, but you should be able to join the club, of course, if you want.)
