Your San Francisco Supervisor Eric Mar wants to expand Article 19F of the San Francisco Public Health Code – you know, the one from 1994 that prohibits smoking in enclosed areas and sports stadiums.
Check out the current rules after the jump, but don’t get used to them as they could be changing soon. This afternoon’s meeting of the Board of Supervisors Committee on Land Use & Economic Development could lead to some changes.

Monday, February 1 at 12:00 noon
WHAT: A rally and press conference to support an ordinance that will
expand protection from second hand smoke by closing gaps in the
San Francisco Public Health Code. San Francisco is poised to
join 18 other Bay Area cities in offering protection from
second hand smoke by prohibiting smoking in many outdoor areas
such as farmers markets, outdoor dining areas, theater and ATM
lines, hotel and motel lobby areas, and other places frequented
by members of the public. The rally will convene just before
the meeting of the Board of Supervisors Committee on Land Use &
Economic Development, which will hear the proposed legislation
for the first time.
WHO: A large crowd of community members including families, tenants,
tenant advocates, members of the Chinese Progressive
Association and San Francisco Tobacco Free Coalition;
Supervisor Eric Mar, Supervisor John Avalos, Jul Lynn Parsons
(Co-Chair of Mayor’s Disability Council), Carol McGruder
(Tobacco Free Coalition member); Alex Tom (Tobacco Free
Coalition; Chinese Progressive Association) and others.
BACKGROUND:
The proposed ordinance would update Article 19F of the San Francisco Health Code, the landmark legislation adopted in 1994 that protects residents and visitors from second hand smoke. If approved by the Board of Supervisors and signed by the Mayor, San Francisco would join a long list of other Bay Area cities that have already expanded protection from second hand smoke for their residents to include many outdoor areas.

San Francisco District 5 Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi gave a stem-winder to a crowd of 100 or in the Civic Center on the steps of City Hall yesterday. Why? Because he wants local hiring for the Doyle Drive replacement project (you know, the one with all that President Barack Obama / Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi federal stimulus money) up in the Presidio.

Resolution Urges Local Hiring for the Doyle Drive Replacement Project
On Tuesday, September 15th, the Board of Supervisors will consider a resolution authored by Supervisor Mirkarimi that urges Caltrans and its contractors and subcontractors working on the retrofit of Doyle Drive to hire from local workers, and in particular, workers from our economically disadvantaged communities. Federal stimulus funds will be used to replace the Doyle Drive approach to the Golden Gate Bridge.
Supervisor Mirkarimi has worked hard to strengthen local hiring requirements for City contractors. However, the Doyle Drive replacement project is managed by Caltrans, who is not bound by city policies regarding Workforce development. The non-binding resolution requests that Caltrans and its contractors and subcontractors actively participate in San Francisco’s Workforce Development Programs when pursuing projects within San Francisco.
A rally and press conference will be held at noon, Tuesday, September 15th to raise awareness on the issue and highlight the successes of the City’s workforce development programs.

The anti-Prop 8 crowd in San Francisco has managed to express itself without getting arrested so far but all that might change on Tuesday, when the California Supreme Court is expected to issue its ruling.

Civil Disobedience if the Court Upholds Prop 8
“This morning, the CA Supreme Court announced that next Tuesday, May 26, we will have a decision about Prop 8. A dangerous precedent has been set that any minority’s rights can be stripped away at the ballot, but the Supreme Court has the opportunity to restore justice and sanity.
“Our rights hang in the balance. Now is the time to act. Next Tuesday, join us for an interfaith prayer service at 8:30 a.m. at St. Francis Lutheran Church in San Francisco (at the corner of Church & Market). Following the service, we will march down Market St. to the Civic Center, where we’ll gather with our community to hear the Court’s decision.”
Tuesday should be memorable no matter how the Court rules.

Look out NIMBY’s - the San Francisco Bicycle Plan is coming to YOUR neighborhood, whether you like it or not. That’s the conclusion you’d come to had you made it this morning’s Bike to Work Day rally on the steps of City Hall. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition put on quite a show for a couple hundred-something in the crowd, most of whom parked their colorful bikes thusly:

SFBC Executive Director Leah Shahum MC’ed the rally, speaking of NIMBYs and the Bicycle Plan. The battle is joined, or it will be starting next month, probably. Get up to speed with the 2008 San Francisco State of Cycling Report put out by the SFMTA.
Lots of Supes were there:
District 1 Supervisor Eric Mar briefly addressed the crowd, talking about improving cyclist safety, mentioning the lower Haight Wiggle he uses to get back and forth from the Richmond District.
District 3 Supervisor and Board President Davis Chiu doesn’t think changes should stop with the proposed Bike Plan. He wants to Go Further. Lots of cheers for that.
District 4 Supervisor Carmen Chu showed off her fashionable fuzzy white helmet to the delight of the crowd.
District 5 Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi always makes these events - he hasn’t really gotten much sleep since the recent birth of Theo Aureliano Mirkarimi.
District 8 Supervisor Bevan Dufty cited recent changes to the streetscape, including Pavement to Parks.
District 9 Supervisor David Campos was pleased to see the outreach to people living in the Mission.
District 11 Supervisor John Avalos gave a shout out to District 6 Supervisor Chris Daly. He also said, “Bikes Rule.”

Join the Coalition of Agencies serving the Elderly (CASE) along with Senior Action Network (SAN), and Planning for Elders in the Central City (PECC) for a rally to protest the recent budget cuts from Senior and Disability Programs and well as the Department of Public Health.

San Francisco Supervisor Eric Mar addressed a crowd of about 100 or so cab drivers (if you include those who were circling City Hall in their taxis) yesterday. They were all there to oppose changes to the Proposition K method of distributing taxi medallions.
