Did you know that “The Future Begins Today?” Well it does, according to the four Bay Area regional agencies meeting right now in Oaktown.

That’s right, it’s Alphabet Soupalooza 2010 and it’s going off at the Marriott City Center in the 510. All your faves are there:

Region Celebrates Earth Day With Launch of ‘One Bay Area’ Collaborative Effort at ABAG General Assembly and Summit

Regional Agencies and Local Governments Join Together to Chart Course to Meet Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets

OAKLAND, Calif., April 22 — Four Bay Area regional agencies today are launching a major outreach initiative, One Bay Area, at a regional assembly bringing together 350 Bay Area city and county elected officials, regional leaders and community stakeholders at the Oakland Marriott City Center. The regional agency partners — the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) and the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) — are coming together in a joint General Assembly and summit to mark the beginning of development of the SB 375 Sustainable Communities Strategy for the Bay Area. SB 375 refers to landmark legislation (authored by Daryl Steinberg and passed by the California Legislature in 2008) requiring regions in California to develop strategies for combating climate change and promoting sustainable communities.

“One Bay Area” harnesses the resources of regional agencies, local governments, county congestion management agencies, local planning and public works directors, city and county managers, public transit agencies, community members and stakeholder groups. These agencies must work together to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced by cars and light trucks in the region over the next 10-25 years. These efforts will be showcased on a new website launched today, located at www.OneBayArea.org.

“One Bay Area underscores the simple and fragile fact that there is only one Bay Area to pass on to our children and grandchildren,” said Scott Haggerty, chair of MTC and Alameda County supervisor, who will be one of the speakers at the Summit.

“USF Steps Up” Program Offers Half-Price Tuition to Visiting Students at Regional Campuses

Did you know that the University of San Francisco has satellite campuses in Cupertino, San Ramon, Santa Rosa, and Sacramento*? (I didn’t.) Anyway, the Jesuits are riding to the rescue for students “trapped” by the University of California and California State University, or something like that. Read all about it:

USF has stepped up to offer select courses to Californians at its regional campuses and we’ve lowered tuition more than 50% for these courses. The courses are offered through USF Steps Up, a new program to help non-USF students trapped by the devastating budget cuts at California’s public universities and give them the classes they need to graduate.

“The University of San Francisco is committed to California’s students and is swinging open its doors in Cupertino, San Ramon, Santa Rosa, and Sacramento to help students fulfill their General Education (GE) coursework. Classes start January 25th and federal student aid may be available for eligible students attending other area universities.

‘USF Steps Up’ to Offer Half Price Courses

Response to California’s Budget and Education Crisis

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 15 — The University of San Francisco, a private Jesuit university, will offer a limited number of general education courses for half price at its regional campuses starting in January 2010. The courses are offered through USF Steps Up, a new program to help non-USF students trapped by the devastating budget cuts at California’s public universities and give them the classes they need to graduate.

Budget cuts at the University of California and California State University systems have resulted in layoffs, course reductions, and higher fees and left students scrambling for classes, many of which have been cancelled. “I’ve heard heartbreaking stories from my colleagues at state schools,” says Jennifer Turpin, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of San Francisco.  “Students are begging to get into classes, but they can’t graduate because they can’t get the classes they need. We realized we could help these students and California by offering these classes at our regional campuses, where USF already has a presence.”

Mother’s Cookies are Back! Circus Animals Return for Mother’s Day

Boy oh boy, the Bay Area was bummed when Oakland-based Mother’s Cookies went belly up last year. But they’re back, baby, just in time for Mother’s Day, 2009. So it’s time to don your hipster T and wallow in nostalgia. Cue the Heavy Action fanfare from Monday Night Football and then contemplate the Howard Cosell-style voiceover (sadly banned from YouTube these days) copy you’d write to herald this news.  

That’s not to say that the old factory in Oakland has been secretly chugging away all these months behind closed doors Willie Wonka-style. That is to say Kelloggs is making Mother’s Cookies now. (Manufacturing tasty treats in the San Francisco Bay Area is a tough business, of course.)

Here are the old-school pink and white colors of Camel, Pig, Rhino, Elephant, Lion, and Bear – and look for yourself below to see the special Halloween colors:

 Mother’s(R) Milestones
From Mother’s(R) cookies’ humble beginnings on a street corner cart to the introduction of Original Circus Animal(R) cookies, today’s comeback would not be possible without Mother’s(R) cookies’ many loyal fans. Here are some memorable Mother’s(R) cookies milestones from the last 95 years:

1914 – N.M. (Noah) Wheatley runs a newspaper stand on the corner of San Francisco’s Market and Kearney Streets and decides to purchase the rights to a recipe of some home-baked cookies from one of his customers.

Circa 1915 – Wheatley trades in his corner stand and relocates to a small, one-person operation on 12th Avenue in Oakland, Calif. where he bakes about 2,000 cookies each day and night. His cookies sold for $1 a box, and his vanilla cookies were an overnight hit.

Circa 1920 – With help from a young woman named Leopoldine, the bakery grows and a romance begins. Noah and Leopoldine marry and together run the company until their son, Floyd Wheatley, is old enough to take over.

1922 – The bakery needs more space and moves to 18th Street, forcing the Wheatleys to sell their home and even their piano to pay for the move.

1949 – Success is sweet, and the bakery moves to 810 81st Avenue in Oakland, Calif. and grows to employ more than 750 people across several Western states.

1952 – Mother’s(R) cookies launches a unique promotion involving baseball player cards inserted in packages of cookies and continues to give them away as promotions at games until 1998.

1983 – Mother’s(R) cookies moves to the big screen in the movie Scarface.

2002 – Mother’s(R) cookies bakes more than 17 million cookies a day to keep up with demand.

2006 – Tough times force the company to close its operation in Oakland, Calif. and shift production to plants in Canada and Ohio.

 2008 – Mother’s(R) cookies closes its doors

 2009 – Mother’s(R) cookies return and fans everywhere rejoice.
