The dude on the left is Ghiberti and I’m pretty sure that that’s Donatello in the blue cap.
You know, when I see all the “improvements” what have come to the Mid-Market since Willie Brown stooge Ed Lee worked to undo the tax signed into law by Willie Brown stooge Gavin Newsom in 2004,* I think, wow, how much better would things be in the Mid-Market if Mark Pincus had donated $100,000 to Mayor Ed Lee (you know, instead of just $50,000) so that the City and County of San Francisco would have then “invested” $3.5 million into Zynga (you know, instead of just $1.75 million).
In closing, please remember that all social problems can only be solved through investments in real estate.
*Yep. Gavin Newsom the Tax Raiser, the Job Killer. It was a different era.

Cock Sparrer are widely considered to be one of the most influential Street Punk bands in history.
2012 sees them celebrate their 40th Anniversary.
The thing about Sparrer is that they’re not just a band. They are childhood friends and have been making a noise since they got together way back in 1972. They were playing, drinking, going to football and generally making a nuisance of themselves when the late 1970s punk scene started in London. Finally it seemed that there were hundreds of like-minded people with the same attitude.
Rarely do a band get the reaction that these guys do. A Cock Sparrer show is an event. It’s like cup final day. A family singalong. Theirs is a career in reverse, they’re bigger now than they ever were. Regularly headlining all the major punk festivals in Europe and occasionally hitting the US to headline events such as Punk Rock Bowling and Riot Fest.
This year is a year of celebration– with friends. And to start it off the band are hooking up with RANCID, who themselves are celebrating 20 years together, for a joint show on 23rd March at the Warfield in San Francisco.
Cock Sparrer — 40 years on, still five blokes in a pub, five mates having a laugh, more than just a band.

Here’s the full title of this sensual and opulent exhibition: “Masters of Venice: Renaissance Painters of Passion and Power From the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.”
So, it’s Hello, Vienna calling!
It’s amazing how San Francisco gets all these shows at our de Young Museum.
Janos Gereben has the story:
“Vienna’s treasures now are on loan to the de Young, the only stopping place for “Masters of Venice.” As before, with Tutankhamen and French Impressionists, Fine Arts Museums Director John E. Buchanan Jr. and President Dede Wilsey have found a golden opportunity for The City to act as a temporary “storehouse” for a collection whose home is being renovated.”
Fine Arts Museums Director John E. Buchanan displays the exhibition’s weighty tome from Sylvia Ferino-Pagden Lynn Federle Orr:

This is it, this is your must-see show, it’s just one after the other:
- Saint Sebastian (ca.1457–1459) by Andrea Mantegna, represents early Renaissance painting and is the first of three paintings on this subject by the artist. In this work Mantegna incorporates details of ancient sculpture and architecture which organizes the pictorial space through linear perspective.
- Four rare works by the enigmatic painter Giorgio da Castelfranco, known as Giorgione. The Three Philosophers (ca. 1477–1510), one of the most celebrated works of the 16th century, uses an innovative integration of the figures within the spatial continuum of nature which marks a dramatic advance in the evolution of Western representation imagery. Also featured in the exhibition is his beautiful Portrait of a Young Woman (Laura)(1506) and pensive Youth with an Arrow (ca. 1508–1510).
- More than a dozen works by Tiziano Vecellio, know as Titian, once Giorgione’s assistant, whose talent soon rivaled his master’s. His work is synonymous with the Venetian style — lustrous pigments, sharply graduated light and shadows delineating robust forms such as his sumptuous Danaë (1560s) and the mysterious and moody Bravo (The Assassin) (ca.1515–1520).
- The tapestry-like, shimmering and sensuously colored works by Paolo Caliari, known as Veronese including the grand scaled Annointing of David (ca. 1555), and the dishonored heroine Lucretia (1528–1588), whose creamy skin and sumptuous fabrics divert the viewer’s eye from her suicide blade.
What you need to know:
Venetian paintings from this period have not been shown in the United States since 1938, and they will be shown only at the de Young.
Where: De Young Museum, 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco
When: The exhibit continues through Feb. 12. The museum is open 9:30 a.m to 5:15 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. It is closed Nov. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
Cost: $10-$20
But remember, this all ends February 12, 2012.
See you there!
It starts off with a big photo of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which contains one of the four big “princely collections” (along with the Louvre, the Hermitage, and the Prado)

And then, on with the show:

It’s one masterpiece after the next:

What more can you ask for?

And what a handsome storefront that is, huh?
(And what are the palm trees for?)
But thank Gaia there’s not a bank in there instead, you know, with ground floor windows ‘n stuff. ‘Cause, in San Francisco:
“…more banks may be unnecessary, or even detrimental to creating diverse and vibrant commercial zones.”
OK fine…

You know who knew about today’s big news, this real estate deal, last week? JK Dineen of the San Francisco Bizness Timez, that’s who.
Look at this beaut:
The brick, five-story Folger Coffee Company Building at 101 Howard in San Francisco, California was the former headquarters of Folgers. It is listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places.]The building still has a sign saying “The Folgers Coffee Company” on one corner. The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania has its California campus on the top floor, where Wharton’s MBA for Executives program is offered.”
Oh baby, it’s your classic Brick & Timber:

Via Eric in SF - click to expand
This building was put up on landfill (in a place where San Francisco Bay used to be 15 feet(!) deep) and it got finished in, wait for it, 1905, just in time for the Great Fire and Earthquake of 1906. But that was no problem at all ’cause of all the pilings it had driven 40 feet(!) into the mud. And the fires, well they just happened to stop right across the street.
See? “X” marks the spot and the dark yellow shows where the fires went:

“USF Purchases Historic Folger Building
08-02-2011
The University of San Francisco has agreed to buy the historic Folger Coffee Building in the heart of downtown San Francisco.
Listed on the National Registerof Historic Places and located within walking distance of where USF first opened its doors in 1855 at Fourth and Market streets, the agreed purchase of the Folger Building at 101 Howard St. marks a return to the university’s roots in downtown San Francisco.
With easy access to freeways, the Bay Bridge, and public transportation, the location builds on USF’s 156-year history of service to San Francisco, while acting on the university’s goals to be more visible and more tightly woven into the fabric of the city.
“By relocating some of the university’s programming, we will have more opportunity to serve multiple audiences – allowing USF to be closer to the businesses and civic organizations with which we currently partner, while also engaging new prospects for collaboration,” said USF President Stephen A. Privett, S.J. “With neighbors such as Google, Twitter, DropBox, SalesForce.com, and established legal and financial services firms, this acquisition presents tremendous opportunity for new corporate partnerships and places USF in the center of innovation.”
With 90 percent of the Folger Building currently occupied by tenants, USF’s presence in downtown will be limited in the near term. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jennifer Turpin, in consultation with the deans and faculty, will finalize decisions about what academic programs will occupy the downtown space and on what schedule. No decisions have been made yet as to what administrative and non-academic units will be housed in the new building.

Hoo boy, first Pfizer and now this. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department has managed to chase away the 2009 Golden Gate Renaissance Faire, which was slated for Speedway Meadow this summer. The event is cancelled. Why’s that ? Read on.
No more gay weddings:

Or girl power:

Or cheering for your favorite:

Or horse petting:

And forget about jousting as well.

Says Marti, the organizer:
“It is with our deepest regret that we must announce that the Golden Gate Renaissance Faire, planned to be held August 1 & 2, 2009, in San Francisco has been canceled. Ongoing challenges with the San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department introducing new restrictions, multiple date changes, and slow to confirm site usage along with continued changing requirements has forced Renaissance Productions to scrap its plans for this year’s event. After six successful years of producing an ever growing event for the community (hosting over 6,000 attendees in 2008), and having zero reported post-event site impact on the grounds, the Park and Recreation Department decided to change the operating arrangements. Due to these factors and a lack of confidence that additional restrictions would not be put into place at the last moment, there is no practical way for Renaissance Productions to bring a quality show to its audience or adequately market the event in due time.”
Here’s a hopeful note:
“We do hope to work out the issues and have an arrangement with the City of San Francisco to hold the Golden Gate Renaissance Faire in 2010.”
Let’s hope. But where will the Ren Fen go this year? Fremont, baby.

2008′s Golden Gate Renaissance Faire was the place to be this past weekend in San Francisco. These shots from the jousting in 2007 show we were a little luckier with the weather last year, but there was a good turnout this go around as well.
David Yu has a few shots here and they’re more coming in over the Flickr.
Except for the modern chain link fence and the ATM machine by the entrance, this is a pretty credible attempt to show what life was like back in the day.

Jousting practice:

A new horse this year:

See you next year.
All the meadow’s indeed a stage
And we are merely players
Performers and portrayers
Each anothers audience
Outside the gilded cage
