CW Nevius vs. HANC – See How the Chronicle Writer Wrote His Story – Video of Chuck in Action

CW Nevius is pretty argumentative for a newspaper writer here in this recent video made of his visit to HANC.

SEPARATING FACT FROM FICTION

CW Nevius came out with a new article antagonizing  the efforts of the Kezar Gardens Ecology Center on Thursday.  Perhaps, if one were to read only the first and last lines of the piece, it could be considered accurate, but everything in between is highly questionable in terms of its precision.  We were lucky to get a tape recording of the interview between Nevius and Ed Dunn, recycling center director.

Tuesday morning, Chronicle photographer, Lea Suzuki, spent hours in the yard photographing recyclers and gardeners for the piece Nevius was writing this week.  She encouraged Nevius to come by as well to see the changes and talk to the energetic chief of staff, Ed Dunn.  And, to his credit, Nevius came by Tuesday afternoon and talked recycling center politics with Ed.  He let us tape him and did not hold back on his vehement opposition to the center, however, he seemed to be quite misinformed and uninterested in setting the record straight.”

“So, we waited to see what he would come up with.  What we got was an emotional article filled with inaccuracies and completely ignoring or failing to research many of the issues presented to him that day.  In response, we have put together a short video detailing the difference between his report and what actually transpired.  The major points we dispute in the video are:

1. The Native Plant garden was a “last ditch effort” to prevent an eviction

Greg Gaar began gardens at the site about a dozen years ago.  He has planted an acre of grounds in native plants surrounding the center and continues to develop and contribute to effective restoration projects all over the city including the Green Hairstreek Butterfly project on Golden Gate Heights.

2. The salaries are too high and no one wanted to show him the books.

Simple math demonstrated in the video refutes that along with an offer to look at the accounting that Nevius does not choose partake in.  The average salary with benefits for a staff member at HANC is approximately 36K and includes health care.

3.  Reference to the Golden Gate Master Plan as proof of non-conforming use.

Nevius was informed about the County General Plan that does allow for a public service that is hard to locate and cannot be located elsewhere to exist on parkland- he made no reference to this in his article.  Also, at this point, no other site on the west side of SF has been identified for HANC to relocate to.

4. Nobody wants us.  City Hall hates HANC.

In Feb 2011, the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution in favor of HANC recycling center, they demanded  that the City work in GOOD FAITH with the center on this issue.  There are also over 100 community gardeners as well as local recyclers that patronize the space everyday. Why Not Get a Job as a Minibus Driver in the 415 and Make $24 an Hour?

Well, I’ll answer my own question here and say the reason is that you already have or aspire to have a job what pays more, or is more satisfying or whatever, but if you’re currently making minimum wage or if you’re unemployed…

Now, you don’t have a have an absolutely clean DMV for the past ten years (I’m sure, IRL), but there are other requirements (see below) that you’d have to work on, that might take a while so maybe this is not for you anyway.

Fine, but what you shouldn’t do is to rail against the machine, rail against, I dont know, all the MUNI drivers in town who make more, who have six-figure compensation packages practically burned into the City Charter:

I work longer and harder than any MUNI driver out there; and yet I make close to minimum wage. WHERE’S MY PATH TO MIDDLE CLASS, you fuckers?”

The solution is to apply to become a MUNI driver yourself, silly billy. (Or BART driver, whichever.) They might not be hiring right now right now, but I’ve see training coaches all over the place this year so it’s not like it’s impossible to get a job at MUNI.

So what I’m I saying? Work on getting a driving job at MUNI, that’s what I’m saying…

Anyway, I saw this private sector ad a while back, but what they’re offering these days is the same basic deal. Maybe this kind of gig could help you get a MUNI job?

Last Night’s One-Year Anniversary Party for The Bay Citizen a Huge Success, As Far As I Know

[Oh, here we go, it's the Citizen of Tomorrow Awards, just posted.]

Now, the problem I had last night was being too ambitious, thinking I could drop by the First Birthday Celebration of The Bay Citizen and then hustle it uphill to the Specfic Whites neighborhood by nine-ish, thinking that this year’s party would be like last year’s, you know, the one they had in the Twitterloin. That one was off the hook.

Anyway, here it is at the stated 8:00 PM starting time. (A dozen people to park your car, but only one to check you into the place.)

(Why, yes, Terra _is_ 200 feet away from a bridge and two miles away from a tunnel – why do you ask?)

And here are your food trucks. (Everything seems to taste better when it’s from a truck, non?)

I guess things got going later in the evening. But I’ll tell you, if you skipped the first hour of last year’s soiree, which was off the hook, you would have missed a lot.

The good thing is that The Bay Citizen produced, as designed, a lot of good stuff the past year.

Bay Citizen Launch Party at the Great American Music Hall a Huge Success

[Whoops, spoke too soon - turns out that the SFGate/San Francisco Chronicle's Katie Baker was en la casa. The conspiracy of silence broken.]

Despite all the obituaries written earlier this year, The Bay Citizen celebrated its launch yesterday at the Great American Music Hall. Some TBC editors on the scene were fretting about getting a new batch of “stately idiom” finished up for the following morning, but a good time was had by all.

They literally rolled out the red carpet in the Tenderloin last night:

Who was there? Everybody. (Everybody excepting some of the hAtERz in local media who feel any new investment should go to existing concerns, you know, the ones that employ the hAtERz themselves. The hAtERz that showed somehow even managed to generate, with noticeable effort, Mona Lisa smile/smirks for the camera.) The place was packed from the get-go, baby. Check out the Party Pix from E.B.Boyd showing who all was there.

Standing room only:

Bay Citizen CEO Lisa Frazier (pronounced fraze-yah) started things off by inviting Founder Warren Hellman to play a  song.

Lois Beckett snapped the chorus and here are the full lyrics to the sing-a-long tune Hardly Strictly News.  Note the A-A-B-B rhyming scheme. Also note:

“We met with Lisa Frazier who pronounced ‘for now it will be free’/
A multi-layered news hub is the only way to be.”

What, “for now?” Uh oh:

Anyway, F. Warren appeared to be somewhat irked by the constant chatter of the assembled throng. Oh well.

(Or let’s call it a $500,000 donation with Uncle Sucker kicking another half mil., mas o menos. That’s the thing with non-profit journalism – the federal govmint lowers your taxes by about 50 cents for every dollar you donate, assuming you pay a lot of taxes in the first place. This is the Unfair Advantage that the Chronicle people complain about. Speaking of which, nothing yet about TBC from the SFC – check for yourself.)

*I had a similar experience over the weekend when I decided to visit my giant Toyota sitting in the shop getting fixed. Even though the place was closed I was able to walk right in and take it for a quick test drive – now they told me last week my car would be ready this coming Wednesday but I wanted a sneak peek. Fuck man, the brakes sounded like shit! All screeching metalicky and whatnot. I called them up today and it turns out that they’re saying the new pads are coming in Tuesday. I don’t know, man, maybe they’ll get it done proper, but that’s a lot of work they still have to do…

So, here’s the thing: If you don’t want to make a deal with The Bay Citizen, then don’t make a deal with The Bay Citizen, in’nt?

Seems pretty simple.

Also it seems that some reporters could report more better. For instance, “….rumors that reporters were being paid huge salaries are untrue.” Um, how do you know that? In fact, there were out-of-hand rumors about what reporters would get paid. And, in fact, there was a lot of disappointment around town when people found out that:

The salaries for reporters aren’t going to be all that high; und 

It matters not because lots of people didn’t get hired anyway, owing to the competitive environment

Oh well. (In addition, the office is just regular, nothing fancy or nothing, right?)

So, with Mother Hellman’s contractions coming faster and faster, things are the way you’d expect for our soon-to-be-bouncing baby Bay Citizen, with:

Jealousy-fueled* ankle-biting from below;

Jealousy-fueled* back-biting from the side; and

Silence from above, pretty much**

See How Much Every Last Bay Area Government Worker Makes, Courtesy of the CoCo Times

Oh, it’s on. The Contra Costa Times went and done it. They went and  asked every bay area governmental agency they could think of (from “A” for AC Transit to “W” for the City of Woodside), “Hey, how much do all your employees make?” So now, tout le monde, can see how much you (a city, county or other regional government employee) makes in salary by clicking here.

The search screen looks a little like this:

What’s that, you work for the state?  Well then the Sacramento Bee has you covered right here.

Is all this disclosure legal? Hells yes! Why? Because International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, Local 21, AFL-CIO v. Superior Court of Alameda County was a 7-0 vote in the California State Supreme Court. Does that mean that you can look up the Supreme Court Justices’ salaries? Yes. Ha! (But they don’t care if you know, srsly.)  

Did some “public health care district” hospital administrator in the East Bay pull down over $800,000 in a year? Yes.

Why? Why not? And, since women only make 59 cents for every dollar men make, shouldn’t her take have been adjusted up 69% to $1,486,000 per year or something? Why not? After all, her job is described as “difficult.”

And her assistants only get paid “from $372,555 to $407,065.”

That’s all.
