Mayoral Communications Director Christine Falvey Denies Edwin Lee Attended a “Re-Elect Ed Happy Hour” Last Week

Monday, July 11th, 2011

In response to this post from earlier today, Director of Mayor Edwin M. Lee’s Communications Office Christine Falvey comments:

“The caption must have been a joke. He has not attended any such events. The photo was taken at the Giants game last week.”

So that explains that, I suppose.

Anyway, that was the answer, here was the question:

“Is this photo (or its caption) newsworthy? I don’t know.

But certainly, the fact that Mayor Edwin Lee was present at a “re-elect Ed happy hour” before last week’s 6-5 victory over the San Diego Padres is news to me.

If you think, at this late date, that the prospects for Ed Lee’s re-election weren’t front and center in the conversation The Powers That Be had last January, then you are horribly, horribly naive.

The fact that things were all mapped out for Ed Lee seven months ago makes the happy talk from The Nevius and King Randy Shaw I of the Tenderloin a little grating.

Anyway, if I were in Ed’s shoes, I’d shut down all the recent Run Ed Run talk by saying, “No, I won’t run for re-election – that would be dishonest.”

Just saying, caballero.”

If Mayor Ed Lee Isn’t Running for Mayor, Then What Was He Doing at a “Re-Elect Ed Happy Hour” Before Wednesday’s Giants Game?”

OMG, Those SFO SuperShuttle Vans Soon to Have SmartDrive Safety Cameras – But What About Bauer Transportation?

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Let me tell you about back in the day – back in the day, the worst drivers on the road were the nuts behind the steering wheels of those dark blue SuperShuttle airport vans. Well guess what – these vans are getting video cameras that will record unsafe driving practices and then report on drivers wirelessly.

Check it:

SmartDrive measures safety for fleet vehicle drivers by monitoring their driving habits as well as capturing accidents and erratic driver behaviors through video. This is done by installing cameras in the vehicles and reviewing events that are generated by the cameras. A SmartDrive camera includes two lenses—one facing the front of the vehicle and one facing the inside of the vehicle—that capture events generated by the camera’s g-force sensors. These events are professionally reviewed by SmartDrive and reports are created for the fleet managers.”

Best I can figure, these cameras are always on but the video gets recorded over if there’s no activation from the g-force sensors. But once some incident occurs, like a sudden stop or even an uncomfortable-for-the-passengers lane change, then the box will snitch on the driver. It’s like a black box on an airliner.

MUNI has something similar, in a way, but why don’t we have a “Measured Safety Program” for other bad drivers like San Francisco cabbies, or Toyota Prius and BMW owners?

Here’s a partial menu of snitching possibilities:

Now I’ll tell you, SuperShuttles don’t seem to menace the roads as much these days. The title of Worst Driven Shuttle now belongs to poorly-rated Bauer Limousine / Bauer Transportation / Bauer “Intelligent” Transportation.

The drivers at Bauer’s manage to sometimes scare even our hard-bitten taxi drivers, sometimes.

“Boy, I’m so Intelligent, I think I’ll lurch into this lane, all of a sudden, cause, like, time is money or something. “

Now I’m not sure why, but Bauer’s has a corporate cheerleader in “City” “Bright” Zennie62. Hey, maybe Zennie will start cheering for Bauer’s to install this SmartDrive stuff for all of Bauer’s vehicles, from the practical to the uber-cheezy:

City Brights are prominent local citizens and experts with a unique Bay Area perspective that is often enlightening, sometimes infuriating and always thought-provoking.”

Or maybe Bauer’s already has a similar system. All’s I know is that Bauer drivers seem to have issues, for what it’s worth.

Anyway, here are all the deets about SmartDrive. They should have things up and running by the end of 2011.

Tattle boxes for all!

Hurray!

(And what about our Federal employees – do the the Feds drive badly? Well, we’ll find out soon ‘nough…)

Anyway, hurray!

“SmartDrive to Equip SuperShuttle and Other Veolia Transportation Services with the Latest in High Tech Safety and Eco-Driving Systems – SmartDrive Safety and Eco-Driving system works to help improve driving performance – reducing collisions and saving fuel.

SAN DIEGO, June 1, 2011  — Executives from Veolia Transportation’s On-Demand Division, whose SuperShuttle, Compass and Golden Touch franchised brands provide consumer and specialized transport services, and SmartDrive Systems, a leader in fleet safety and operational efficiency, today announced Veolia’s purchase of SmartDrive safety and eco-driving technology for the division’s 1,631 vans and buses throughout the US.

SmartDrive uses video, audio and ECU-connected vehicle data sensors to detect and record risky driving maneuvers, such as sudden stops, hard cornering, aggressive acceleration, and excessive speed. After expert review and analysis, SmartDrive delivers recommendations so fleets can respond quickly to reduce risky driving and collisions.”

San Francisco’s World-Class Ship-Repair Capability Gets that Carnival Splendor Cruise Ship Working – And a Mystery Solved

Monday, February 28th, 2011

You know why that Carnival Splendor cruise ship got towed to a San Francisco dry dock all the way up from Fun Diego last month, you know why her owners chose the 415 as the place where she’d get a new engine and get a whole bunch of work done?

Because they didn’t really have a choice, that’s why. If your 300-yard+ vessel needs to come out of the briny somewhere in the Eastern Pacific, odds are you’ll bring it here. Hurray!

So, why did the fire in one engine room affect the other engine room? Answer here.

And did the passengers really eat airlifted Spam and Pop Tarts for three days? Not really. Answer here.

The view from our world-class San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge. (It’s only been two decades since that earthquake and we’re almost done fixing it up already!) Now-defunct Potrero Power Plant camera right:

Anyway, the Splendor is loaded up and chugging towards Mexico, back OTJ.
