Wow.

(Yeah, but even so, you just do a “no endorsement” deal, right?)

And this is Chuck Reed’s daughter, the 39-year-old the Air Force Lt. Col? Hatchi matchi!

San Jose and the Bay Area’s Second-Largest City Create the First Large-Scale Municipal “Hotspot 2.0″ WiFi Service

Monday, June 30th, 2014

This is the first I’ve heard of this.

I’ll have to check it out sometime, see how it works…

“San Francisco and San Jose Create the First Large-Scale Municipal Hotspot 2.0 Service with Ruckus Wireless and Global Reach

Landmark Effort Gives Millions of Bay Area Residents and Visitors Secure, Automatic Connections and Seamless Connectivity with San Francisco and San Jose Free Wi-Fi Services

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Ruckus Wireless, Inc., (NYSE: RKUS) today announced a major initiative with the City and County of San Francisco, the City of San Jose, CA and Global Reach Technology to create the first large-scale municipal Hotspot 2.0 service that allows millions of visitors and residents to automatically and securely connect to and seamlessly roam using San Jose and San Francisco free Wi-Fi services. The new Hotspot 2.0 service is now live and operational.

An innovative approach to providing public Wi-Fi access, Hotspot 2.0 is a new technology specification developed by members of the Wi-Fi Alliance (WFA) that radically simplifies and automates how users securely connect to and roam between Wi-Fi networks without requiring users to manually select a network or sign-on.

Leveraging new Hotspot 2.0 technology, users in San Francisco and San Jose now can enjoy seamless and secure Wi-Fi data connectivity that mirrors today’s cellular experience, with the added benefit of working on Wi-Fi-only devices such as tablets and laptops. The initial Bay Area Wi-Fi Hotspot 2.0 deployment supports Hotspot 2.0 enabled iOS 7 devices (iPhone 5/5s/5c, iPad 3, iPad Mini, iPad Air, iPad Mini Retina, and iPod Touch 5th Gen) as well as Apple laptops running OS X Mavericks.

“With the adoption of Hotspot 2.0, we are literally transforming the user Wi-Fi experience,” said Vijay Sammeta, Chief Information Officer for the City of San Jose. “Hotspot 2.0 makes our infrastructure smarter by eliminating tedious and cumbersome device configuration. Now people can securely connect to and roam using our networks in a transparent fashion. Things don’t get much easier.”

“People want their devices to automatically connect to trusted Wi-Fi networks whenever they are in range, and to use strong encryption as well,” said Marc Touitou, Chief Information Officer for the City of San Francisco.  “This is precisely what we have achieved.”

They go an on, after the jump

We welcome all women riders of different age groups, ethnicities and backgrounds. We are a tight knit group of women who support each other on and off the road. Requirements are only that you display a desire to ride, be trustworthy, respectful toward all our other brothers and sisters and  define this sisterhood to be an addition of your already existing family.
We do have a prospecting period which has been put in place for us to get to know you and you to get to know us. This lifestyle and Sisterhood may come easy to some but not to all.
As women we encourage other women to get out there and ride, have fun, get to know one another and expand your circle of friends.
The Vixens also spend a lot of time together not just riding but with our families doing other things off the road such as camping, days at the park and special holidays. This is not just a club, it’s our family.
So regardless of your interests if you enjoy riding we welcome one and all to join us. We ride all the time and whether 2 of us, 4 of us, or all of us you can bet we are having fun and that’s what it’s all about! “

A Brief History of the Mavericks Big Wave Surf Contest

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

“I’ll tell you, Mavericks used to be something, man. But now it’s all corporate and shit, man.”

Sort of.

Hey, isn’t the Mavericks surf contest just like the Burning Man festival? Just look where they got started – same beach, different county:

I’ll you, ten years from now, you’ll hear about some underground event what’s been gaining in popularity and I’ll bet you it will have gotten its start on one of these Bay Area beaches that you can see in the photo.

Anyway, Mavs is on, once again, this coming Friday, January 24th, 2014.

Now back in the day, to see Mavericks you’d just park you ride on the Pacific Coast Highway and then ride your bikes to the beach. Easy peasy.

And then they’d let you climb up on the bluff for a good view (even though people fell off of it all the time).

This big green thing:

(Mmmm… why do these rocks a “breakwater?”)

And then they didn’t want people on the bluff so they put up an “event village” or something on the beach below.

Dangerous hilarity ensued, due to what they called a “sneaker wave,” but really it was just kind of a regular wave

And then, Mavs went Hollywood:

But, you know, I guess it’s really the same event as it always was.

Fundamentally.

(Just as with Burning Man.)

So, look for all the same thrills chills and spills as back in the day:

Darryl “Flea” Virostko was a tad aggressive in the first round of 2008:

Canon 1D Mark II, Canon EF 300mm 2.8 IS plus Canon 2x II extender at f8.0

And if you’re on a boat with an aggressive Captain, this will be your view on Friday, January 23rd, 2014:

All right, see you there!

But let’s hope we have more lulz than lulls.

‘Cause nobody wants to see too many heats like this:

Tink happy tots!

MUJI, originally founded in Japan, does not direct its products to be affected by any trends and “isms”, rather, aims to be universally relevant. The Craziest Billboard Ever: “Visit Beautiful Island! Dodko, Korea!” – Insincerely Looming Over the I-80 in SoMA

Friday, August 30th, 2013

All right, here we go:

“The Liancourt Rocks … are a group of small islets in the Sea of Japan.”

Visiting these rocks for just 20 minutes, maximum, would involve a two lengthy flights* and then a 14-hour round-trip boat ride.

So this billboard, which is getting a lot of attention in South Korea, isn’t to promote tourism, it’s to promote politics:

So it’s just like this one** (that used to be near AT&T Park?) that was put up by a Yelp three-star dentist from San Jose, who*** probably charges too much money if he has the spare cash to produce ineffectual billboards like these.

Which is fair enough.

I s’pose.

Now the thing about the “East Sea” is that every sea is an east sea, right? So we should rename the Atlantic Ocean the East Ocean because that’s how it seems from our perspective? And without Japan, the Sea of Japan would just be the Pacific Ocean, right?

All right, I’ll just sit back and wait for the invasion of the Liancourt Rocks, which is never going to happen, but if it did, it would go a little something like this.

All the deets:

“The Liancourt Rocks, also known as Dokdo or Tokto (독도/獨島, literally “solitary island”) in Korean, and Takeshima (たけしま/竹島?, literally “bamboo island”) in Japanese,[1] are a group of small islets in the Sea of Japan.”

* Crew Resource Management optional?

** Significant? No. Nobody cared about the World Baseball Classic, 90% of San Franciscans have no knowledge of it.

*** Am I supposed to know what “Top Best *8*” means? I don’t.

The New Cirque du Soleil Show is Going to be Awesome – AMALUNA Starts 11-15-13 in SF, 1-22-14 in SJ – Buy Ticks Now

Monday, June 10th, 2013

I’ll ask you, have you ever been to a bad Cirque du Soleil?

Now, supposedly we had a bad one blow through town a few years back down at the Cow Palace. Your local MSM Arts crew was non-enthusiastic – not all of them wanted to go review it, see?  So comped tickets made it all the way down to people involved with lesser blogs, such as your truly.

And I’ll tell you, C du S in that ugly, ugly Daly City concrete blockhouse was awesome. They had like 17 bits to do and 16 of them were very impressive or better. And keep in mind that this was an older show that was put on not under the big tent.

So now we have a brand new show coming to town starting November 15th, 2013.

The time to buy tickets for it is right now. You’ll thank yourself later on.

All the deets:
