So the only way to stick it to the Man is to say, “No toasting for me, please.”* (And, of course, get it to-go, as young Akit helpfully points out.) Then, you save like 75 cents every time you get lunch.
This situation really isn’t the fault of the California State Board of Equalization, but it just happens to be the agency what has the job of interpreting and enforcing some of the cray-cray laws** passed in Sacramento, so what can you do?
*And no cucumbers. Cucumbers are horrible, IMO.
**You’re too young to remember the famous snack tax, but I’m not. It didn’t last too long.

Here’s the sad story from the dude what lost his stuff at the Subway Sandwiches on Polk and Sutter:
“(3/25/2012) I was in the Subway sandwiches place at 1199 Sutter at Polk and then walked outside to get a taxi for some people I was with. I had accidentally left my phone and wallet on the table. When I returned about 30 seconds later my stuff was gone. Here is the surveillance video of who took it. Please message me or email me at racejohnson@gmail.com if you recognize her.”
Now, I say girls, I mean, I can’t tell how old they are, something betwixt 14 and 24. They act like high school students AFAIAC.

More deets here on the Reddit SF.

OMG, this is it. [Cue O Fortuna]
It’s the fourth anniversary of obscenely-highly-regarded Ike’s Place, so ScoutMob has a free sandwich deal for you.

You can’t beat that.
(I guess Ike won that NIMBY war after all. Good for him.)
Anyway, enjoy.
Count of Monte Chase-O Fortune,
like the moon
you are changeable,
always waxing
or waning;
hateful NIMBYs
first oppress
and then soothe
as fancy takes it;
poverty
and power
but Hot Momma Huda
melts them like ice.
Fate – monstrous
and empty,
you whirling wheel,
stand malevolent,
well-being is vain
and always fades to nothing,
shadowed
and veiled
you plague Ike Shehadeh too;
now through trickery,
I bring my bare back
to your NIMBY villainy.
Fate, in health
and in virtue,
is against me,
driven on
and weighted down,
always enslaved.
So at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating string;
since Fate
strikes down the strong man,
everyone weep with me
Mayoose’s CA-BLT

Of course the line for sandwiches at The Sentinel these days can still be quite long, but don’t forget about the Sentinel’s little brother, highly-rated Golden West at 8 Trinity Place just up the hill from Sutter and Montgomery.
What’s happened over the past year is that Sentinel customers are now going to GW as a substitute for short rib sandwiches and whatnot.
The whole joint is just two windows, one to order and one to pick up. See?
Gold! I love goooold!

Click to expand ($79 is the price of a parking ticket on Trinity Alley and, if you don’t pay within a month, the cost goes up to $196.97, or something*)
Here’s a recent lunchtime menu:

They’re open from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM Monday through Friday.
Join the (small) crowd.
See you there!

Haighteration has the story this AM about how the San Francisco restaurant community is coming together to help one of its own, someone who is still reeling from a crime committed late last year:
“In late November, a beloved member of the Ragazza staff, and broader San Francisco restaurant community, was the victim of a terrible crime. To help this individual get back on their feet, Ragazza, along with several other establishments, are hosting a fundraiser. All proceeds will benefit the crime victim. Funds will be raised through several sources.”
And check out all the local businesspeople who are contributing, below.

“1. On Monday, January 24, Ragazza will donate 100% of sales proceeds to this cause. For this evening, Ragazza will hold an intimate benefit dinner, with a special menu designed by Chef Sharon Ardiana. The meal will be served family style, with antipasti, salad, pizza, entree and dessert. Seatings are at 5:00 pm, 7:00 pm or 9:00 pm. The cost is $35/person, including wine, excluding gratuity and tax. As of 1/13/11, the 7pm seating is sold out. To make a reservation or to be put on the 7pm waiting list, please email Laurie at laurie@aocsf.com.
2. A variety of items will be auctioned off on eBay, between Friday, January 21st and Monday, January 31st. Auction items include special meals at notable San Francisco restaurants, cooking lessons, private meals prepared by Bay Area chefs, art, photography, wine and other items. To see all items up for auction or to bid on an item, please visit this link.
3. You may send a cash donation to benefit the victims of this crime. To do so, please send a check made out to our fiscal sponsor, La Cocina, Inc. Please write Ragazza Fundraiser in the memo line so that your contribution goes directly to our cause. Donations may also be made on the evening of January 24 at the restaurant. For your donation to be tax deductible, it will need to be made via check payable to La Cocina, Inc. Donations may be sent to:
La Cocina
2948 Folsom Street
San Francisco, CA 94110-4028
Note that all auction items and donations made via check to La Cocina, Inc. are tax deductible over the fair market value of the item (in the case of auction items). La Cocina is a registered 501c3 organization.
Full details coming soon, along with links to the eBay bid pages once the auction is live (anticipated to be on Friday, January 21). Here’s a preview of some of the items we will have available for bid…..

As promised, famed Taylor’s Automatic Refresher has a new name as of yesterday: Gott’s Roadside Tray Gourmet.
The reviews are already in for yesterday’s completely free party:
“Expectations: a long line of grumpy people and a halfway decent burger. Reality: A fast moving line with friendly people, friendly staff and a fun event with a DJ. 3 choices, ahi, cheeseburger, kimchee pulled pork. All came with fries and a drink (soda, champagne, beer). I was so surprised that they did the whole meal not just the free burger! The burger was cooked perfectly medium, fries were perfect and beer was good.”
Throw in 1000 free red shirts and it turned out to be quite the shindig. We’re talking crunk crunk, junk junk, drunk drunk.
Ah, Cristal, my T-shirt, and a couple of free ahi burgers - why not?

Yesterday’s mise-en-scene:

Verily, it was a “dancin’ on the tables kinda night.”

Bon Chance, Gott’s Roadside!

San Francisco’s newest, littlest neighborhood, Little Saigon, would like you to come on over to Larkin Street for lunch, why not? There’s no special promotion going on right now, but you can get good food for not so much money 365 days a year.
See what Yelp has to say and then head out.
The entrance to LS, complete with a greeter:

Things sure are busy at Lee’s Sandwiches – you can start an argument by talking about this joint, but it certainly is popular at lunchtime.

See you there!
Update, from the people: “Wrap Delight, Larkin near Golden Gate, has great banh mi sandwiches. A lot of people swear by Saigon up the street, but I find Wrap Delight a little better. And they’re like $2.50. Definitely better than Lee’s. I went there once. Doesn’t compare.”
