Alex Tourk, a lobbyist and head of Ground Floors Public Affairs, is the official proponent of the proposed Saturday Voting Act. Alls he needs is about seven thousand signatures and he’ll qualify this baby for the November 2010 elections. And then, if all goes to plan, you’ll be able to vote on the Saturday before Election Day plus on Election Day as well, starting 2011.
Do I think that it’s some big deal that San Franciscans don’t vote all that much? No. Am I embarassed that our voting participation rate is “worse than Bulgaria’s?” No. Do I think that non-voters in America should be deined their paychecks for three months the way they do it down Bolivia Way? No.
OTOH, it wouldn’t be necessarily a bad thing to be able to vote on Saturdays as well as Tuesdays, assuming all the deets could get worked out. But As Always, You Make The Call.

I’ll tell you all that I know. It seems that “the world’s number one daytime dating expert” Jeremy Soul* is coming to San Francisco to teach a one-day pickup artist workshop for $1500(!) per person on February 6, 2010.
That’s all well and good, but here’s the thing – after their morning session, they’re going to go out into the streets to put theory into practice. That means that workshop attendees are going to hit on you if you’re anywhere around Union Square** this Saturday from 2:00 to 6:00 PM.
Brace yourselves, girlfriends.
And for you men out there, I’ll say that there are still two spaces left (purportedly, anyway) in the San Francisco workshop. You ought to cowboy up and fork over your money, right? Check the video*** to see the techniques in action. And click here to see what recent graduates have said about their schooling:

For whatever reason, there’s no LGBT workshop in the works.

1. Appearance. Be mindful of what you wear and what it says about you.
2. Start the conversation with a compliment. For instance: “I saw you passing by and I like your style.”
3. Be interested. Find out who she is and what she does. Lead the conversation.
4. Body language. Act confidently and don’t be afraid to touch the person you’re talking to.
5. Get contact information to be able to meet later. Evenings are better suited for intimacy.
All right, here’s the elevator pitch for Saturday’s workshop. And, oh yes, “tram” is English English for “MUNI.”

LovEvolution 2009 (or LoveFest or the Love Parade, call it what you will) is still going strong down in Civic Center today – what a huge turnout it has – check the best photos from Flickr and some more photos posted on SFist. Now this year everybody’s paying $10 to get in, so that helps to pay for San Francisco’s excessive fees for doing anything, anytime, anywhere. Anyway, it’s fuzzy cowboy hats as far as the eye can see. And MUNI is FUBAR’ed beyond all recognition. Oh well.
Remember, this type of gathering is Why They Hate Us. Not Fleet Week or nothing, it’s this kind of stuff that They hate. Oh well. Here’s a slide show of photos to ponder. WHEN: Love Week starts Wednesday, September 30th with official and affiliated parties each night all week and through the weekend.
The main LovEvolution event is Saturday, October 3rd from 12noon – 8:00pm.
WHO: SF LovEvolution is all ages & all friendly peoples.
WHAT’S MORE: A parade starts from 2nd & Market St. in downtown San Francisco with ~25 floats heading West down Market St. The parade is free and all ages.
THEN WHAT: The floats arrive at Civic Center plaza where they park to becomes 25 stages on a transformed festival grounds with food, beverage, a new live electronic and performance stage, and outstanding revelry. There is a $10 entrance fee to the festival grounds, children under 12 with their parents are Free. All ages welcome. No outside alcohol.
WHY: The entrance fee was necessary for the survival of the event due to significantly higher city related fees. Please read the whole story below!
THERE’S MORE (!): After the festival ends at 8:00pm a number of after parties kick off all over the city, including the Official After Party produced by Skills & Spundae on site at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. After parties have their own admission and age policies. See the

As anyone who attended last years event knows, SF LovEvolution is now the largest electronic music event in America. Thanks to all those who have faithfully supported us and to the many new Lovers who attended last year. Because of the growth of LovEvolution, however, and to preserve our ability to parade down Market Street and party right in front of San Francisco City Hall, we’ve had to institute a few changes to this years event.
First, because of escalating city fees and the events growth last year, LovEvolution 2009 will require a large increase in all levels of traffic, police, security and medical personnel. This translates into a very large increase in how much money it costs to pull off this special event. As this is a non-profit event with minimal corporate sponsorship, we will be charging a $10 admission to LovEvolution this year in order to pay for the increased staff and other event expenses. We’ve always asked for a $10 donation but since most people do not give, donations are not sufficient to fund and improve the event. In order to be able to continue the event, we received special permission from the city for a $10 admission plan. This is as close to free as we could make it and at $10 for 250 world class DJs, LovEvolution is still the best bargain for an event of this scale in America. **We pay 100% of the costs back to the city, so without this change, we could not have the event. Please note kids under 12 with their parents are FREE. You can also get in free by volunteering. Of course – the parade is FREE to all and the entire event from 12noon- 8:00pm is still ALL AGES.** (After parties will vary by event).
Second, there will be no glass or outside alcohol allowed in the event. This has always been a condition of our permits, but when the event was smaller we never had to enforce. But the site was littered with broken glass last year that presented a safety hazard, so we now have to enforce this policy. This is for all our safety and is no different than at any concert or gated event, so please don’t bring alcohol or glass, it will be confiscated or you’ll be turned away at the gates.
On the bright side, the $10 admission will allow us to continue having this amazing event as well as to add some special production elements in Civic Center plaza. This year we are premiering the LovEvolution Live stage in front of city hall featuring an all out performance by The Mutaytor, and much more tba. The $10 admission will also allow us to reduce prices at our bars since we are now not as dependent upon alcohol sales to pay for the event. We’ll also be eventually eliminating entry fees fees for the floats so producers can make their floats even better. And YES – there will be ins and out allowed. And YES, kids under 12 with their parents are FREE.
Last but not least, the $10 admission will allow us to increase the amount of our non-profit contributions to other worthy organizations. Non-profits that received funds last year and/or we expect to donate to this year include:

I wasn’t sure yesterday (take a gander here to get up to speed) but I am today – Oktoberfest By the Bay has got to be the biggest ripoff of any annual Bay Area event. In short, it’s not for me.
But you, you’re different, you’re special – you’re a high-functioning social butterfly who knows how to party with your upscale friends anytime, anywhere. So you should go, of course. But normal people just might feel ripped off after they pay $35 to go to O-fest Saturday afternoon only to get kicked out at 5:00PM to cool their heels for an hour waiting for the right to pay another $35 to start again at 6:00 PM.

Let’s read the FAQ for some 411:
“1. Why two completely separate sessions on Saturday?”
“Happily, demand has outstripped supply and, for the time being, this is the best way to provide access and an all-around better experience (shorter lines, more seating, etc.). So, we’ll clear the building at 5pm and start over at 6pm with a whole new group of festival goers. Pick the session that works best for you! We anticipate selling out both Saturday sessions.”
Bring a date on Saturday and the whole affair will only cost you $140. Oh yes, bring some extra money for food and beer and Jager and whatnot, of course.

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve spoken with who were not too pleased with Oktoberfest by the Bay back two years ago when it was $20 a head to get in at Fort Mason. Did the $20 get you anything? Not that I can recall. It gave you the right to get in line to get tokens to get in line to….
Anywho, O-Fest will be down in Pier 48 this year. And because the organizers realize that their Yelp ratings are pretty low and in view of the fact we’re in a recession, ticket prices have risen. Dramatically.

Here’s the thing about the 14th Annual Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival that just finished up - there’s chocolate everywhere. And what’s nice about it is that there’s no fences or checkpoints or anything. What your $20 gets you is not admission but a cafeteria ticket with 15 checkboxes. So go around and sample what you want. You can get your fill, and if you wanted to, you could go full Augustus Gloop.
It is truly the Land of Chocolate – don’t miss the 15th Annual in 2010 next September.
Famous Chef-testant Casey Thompson lectured on the subject of chocolate waffles or something like that. Look what she has – dark chocolate, the hard stuff:

Here’s how it works – find something that looks appealing and then line up to get a sample. They’ll check your card off and then you can move on. People could spend hours just milling around and noshing and watching the demonstrations, etc…

Best in Show would have to be these colorful Truffle Bars from Sterling Confections. I didn’t actually taste the things, but they look to be packaged well and that’s half the battle when your shopping for a gift, right girlfriend? Sterling can pick up the slack after the recent Joseph Schmidt Confections (“The Soul is For Hire, and They’ve Sold the Heart”) sell out.
Things got a little frenetic when they started throwing gelato containers off the back of the refrigerator truck. It was Brother Against Brother:
