I bet you’d love to have your very own smoking tent. One that’s large enough to be seen from outer space, right?
Well then you should envy California Governor Arnold Schwazenegger ’cause this beige smoking tent is all his.

Best of all, it’s been excluded from California’s new anti-smoking laws because, well, just because.
And if there’s the occasional flooding in our historic capitol due to all the fake plastic grass that’s been put down, well, that’s all right as well.

Well this was the scene a few nights back at the Fairmont Hotel, which at the time contained former presidential horndog Bill Clinton, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tiger Woods, you know, people like that. (Who knows, maybe Barack Obama will be there soon.)
You had the TASER-equipped California Highway Patrol, the Secret Service, all kinds of security blocking pedestrain access to this part of California Street so the V.I.P.s could get to their waiting motorcades.
But what’s this? Biker dude just wanted to go home so he’s not caring about which sidewalk is verbotten. He powered up the block, dodging through all the scaffolding, the CHP, the startled security agents, nothing slowed him down. You might think he’d instead just use the roomy, traffic-free slow lane in the foreground…

I used to think that this guy, Andy, was the bravest cyclist in San Francisco. But now the crown must pass to the new fellow. (In San Francisco, most sidewalks are off-limits to most cyclists, so it would have been a piece of cake to cite and release the biker.)
He probably also drives his ride as slow as he can in front of harried moms in the East Bay – just for kicks, you know?
(Also noteworthy is the name Tonga on the sign advertising our famous $13/drink tiki lounge, the troubled Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar. With a name like that, it deserves to be shut down, or some people might think. What’s next, Kung Fu Tacos on wheels appearing regularlyat Sansome and Jackson?)
Oh well.

Well, yesterday was a great day for the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and UCSF when the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundationgave away a big fat $25,000,000 check for stem cell research up at the Parnassus Campus.

California Senator Dianne Feinstein says it’s time for California lawmakers to put a water bond on the November ballot, but outfits like Clean Water Action and the Calfornia Coastkeeper Alliance rallied yesterday in opposition:
“Conservation and fishing groups representing over 180,000 Californians, including the California Coastkeeper Alliance, submitted a petitionto Governor Schwarzenegger and Senator Feinstein today and rallied at events throughout the state, calling for an end to the proposed $9.3 billion water bond, which is based heavily on ineffective and environmentally destructive dams.”
San Francisco Supervisor Tom Ammiano says he doesn’t want to start his term in the Assembly, “telling mothers that their local school district is closing so we can build a dam.” Fair enough.

There’s still time this week to work out a compromise, it looks like.

State Controller John Chiang, California’s independent fiscal watchdog, is having a thing with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger these days over how much salary to pay state workers during the budget crisis. See Hank Plante’s interview with “heroic” John here.

There were a few “Chiang for Governor” signs here and there, but if you ask him if he’s running, he’ll say he’s not:
This crowd of mostly state workers was large and intense. “We can’t survive on $6.55 [an hour].”
Columnist Dan Walters thinks he sees the “fuzzy outline” of a solution.

Look at what these Sierra Club members in San Francisco are doing to lobby Kollifornia’s governor – they’re writing actual letters. Why don’t they just register their concerns via email? Effectiveness, that’s why. Real letters to elected officials get more attention than email.
How much more?
Ten times more, a hundred times, a thousand – something like that. You see, Arnie’s a busy man, what with his heavy decisions about Bo Derek and such. You need a real letter to cut through all that other stuff he has to deal with. Email just doesn’t cut it anymore.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture called it quits today on the issue of spraying for the Light Brown Apple Moth. All of a sudden like.
The family that Stops the Spray together, stays together (or something like that).
This should be gratifying to Senator Carole Migden, who thinks, “Bay Area residents ought not to serve as guinea pigs and have their health jeopardized for an ill-conceived program and an unproven approach.”
The same with San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who says he’s, “glad CDFA appears to have accepted the inevitable.”
So after all these months, that is that.

The bandwagon opposing aerial spraying for light brown apple moth eradication is gaining momentum.
Last night, San Francisco Supervisors Carmen Chu, Gerardo Sandoval, and Ross Mirkarimi, along with scientists, physicians and organic farmers, all addressed a standing-room-only crowd of hundreds at the Hall of Flowers in Strybing Arboretum.
Senator Carole Migden praises the efforts of the assembled experts.
In related news, the “twist-tie” approach is under new scrutiny in San Mateo County.
On it goes. Per the Chronicle:
On Saturday, Stop the Spray Marin is holding a march and rally from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the southwest end of the Corte Madera Town Center. More information about the events is at www.sfspraytownhall.org and www.stopthespraymarin.org.
It’s hard to imagine light aircraft buzzing the city with spray canisters firing after seeing all this agitation, but who knows…

San Francisco had a large rally yesterday on the steps of City Hall, sponsored by Play Not Spray. Kids and their parents aren’t satisfied with Governor Arnold Schwazenegger’s delay of Light Brown Apple Moth spraying in the Bay Area – they want the whole shebang cancelled.
It seems the majority of people in San Francisco would prefer to deal with the LBAM itself rather than with the effects of eradication. Many feel the cure is worse than the disease.
(Another benefit of cancelling eradication is that indescribable videos like this will stop getting made.)
