This was the scene last night at the Palace of Fine Arts, where Stanfurd freshman and bay area local Crystal Lee was crowned Miss Chinatown USA 2010. It’s international news.

How many officers and members of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition were on hand last night at Room 400 in City Hall to make sure the Planning Commission properly midwifed the birth of the San Francisco Bicycle Plan?

Marincello is the City That Never Was.
“Marincello was a failed development project in Marin County, California that would have put a metropolis full of homes, apartments, and hotels in a planned community atop the Marin Headlands, overlooking the Golden Gate. Its upheaval set the precedent for Marin County’s rigid anti-development stance and push for open space.”

SPUR, the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association, has a new clubhouse at 654 Mission betwixt Second and Willie Brown Way. Let’s check out your new Urban Center.
These orange letters have become icons already. (Or red, some people think these letters are actually red, but as always, You Make The Call. The light, she can play tricks on you sometimes, you know.)
The Freeway Revolt appears to be alive and well what with the James Lick petering out in the SoMA near the Flank in this 3D model. See how it comes in from the right and just stops all of a sudden – does SPUR know something we don’t? Will drivers coming up from the south need to take the John F. Foran past Dogpatch to get to the Bay Bridge? (And when oh when will a Boulevard Revolt come to Octavia and take away that Revolting Boulevard? Moving on.)

As promised, the 2009 edition of the How Weird (aka Howard) Street Faire yesterday had a big turnout and it went off without a hitch. Founder Brad Olsen has had to deal with a few hassles having to do with police fees but things all worked out, it appears.
So pull up a chair and watch the slide show.

Well, check it out. Today, Southwest Airlines (LUV) is crowing about their lack of fees.
So that means “NO First or Second Checked Bag Fees, Change Fees, Fuel Surcharges, Snack Fees, Aisle or Window Seat Fees, Curbside Check-In Fees, or Phone Reservation Fees.” Hurray!
What the “legacy” carriers don’t seem to understand is that some people really, really don’t like hidden fees. Like how some restaurants in San Francisco hit you with an undisclosed 4% tack-on when you get your bill.
Fly with Southwest and you’ll think you’ve been transported back to the 1970’s, when fees were a four-letter word:

Now, some may quibble about a few things, like how the cheapest fares from Southwest are only available online. But that’s as it should be, since reserving a flight by yourself lowers the expenses of running the airline. This is a better approach than a company advertising a price and then surprising you with a fee that you didn’t even know existed. The point is that Southwest has none of the new fees all the other airlines seem to have.
Now this might put SWA at a disadvantage when they advertise their rates, because they lose all those little “profit centers” the other airlines take advantage of. But just remember that Bags Fly Free, and lots of other things are free, when you fly with LUV.
Hurray. Certain other airlines should take notice of this.
