San Francisco-based Virgin America Airlines has its own “docu-series” starting up on March 24th at 9:30 PM on the CW – it’s called Fly Girls (and it’s not to be confused with the In Living Color/Jennifer Lopez kind of Fly Girls from the 90’s).
Take a look. Meet Mandalay, a local “girl” who’s a Virgin America flight attendant based out of SFO in real life. Listen to her go on about the “romance of aviation” and the benefits of choosing Virgin America, the only California-based airline left by the way.
Barbie, Skipper, and the ”ethnic girlfriends of Barbie“ (or, more politely, a ”mini- United Nations of races and ethnicities“) are coming soon to KBCW-TV channel 44 / 45 and all the CW stations across America. Oh yes, their “real” names (or “reel” names) are Tasha, Louise, Mandy (or Mandi), Nikole and Farrah:

Doesn’t this promo shot from the CW Network of former beauty queen Nikole look just like a Virgin America ad?

This show is going to be something like eight half-hour Virgin America infomercials complete with 30-second commercials for shampoo and cosmetics. Nevertheless, it’s going to be better than NBC’s high-budget San Francisco-based Trauma serial, that’s a given from the get-go. (Wonder if cheeky Virgin Airlines founder Sir Richard Branson will make an appearance or two…)
Just discovered that my aging Trinitron (that could be older than you) actually receives channel 44 so I’ll be sure to tune in to check out the debut.
Excelsior, Ever Upward.
Now, meet the Fly Girls and get more deets after the jump.

Let’s see here, the bay area hasn’t heard from PETA since that thing where they pwned the South San Francisco Ronald McDonald in front of all those kids in September and the red blood bikini chicken bath thing on Van Ness last summer. Now, it seems the focus of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animules has traveled up to the Great White North for the start of the 2009-2010 baby seal hunting season.

An immaculate black FJ-40 Toyota Land Cruiser is the primary reason this Matrix Morpheus-looking dude just won SF HoTY ‘09.
Just look at the details:

As seen on Fell Street. Click to expand.
Aging FJ-40 model (豊田 ランドクルーザー, Toyoda Rando-Kurūzā). Of course! Dude could buy a much newer Bland Cruiser (2009 price = $50k-something) instead of this (possibly amazingly expensive) torture box, but where’s the fun in that?
Alaska license plate: SURF. Of course! Our 50th state is the next frontier of surfing, don’t you know.
Right Hand Drive (RHD). Of course! Dude’s driving on the wrong side of the vehicle. Why? Why not?
Snorkel. Of course! Can you see the urban snorkel air intake standing up on the left side? Very handy when our streets are under five feet of water. Snorkle! Snorkle! Snorkle!
Original diesel engine. Of course! A Chevy small block would just drop right in, but where’s the fun in that?
No doors. Of course! How can people see your stylish shoes and socks with doors blocking the view?
The hat and the fogglasses (on a very dark summer day) put him over the top. Nobody could possibly best this fellow, that’s why he’s San Francisco’s Hipster of the Year, 2009.

Fox TV 24-obsessed former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown recently expressed his thoughts after being queried about the ending of the current Season 7. Willie says hero Jack Bauer will be on his deathbed as the season closes, so fans will need to bide their time to see if Jacko makes it through.
It sort of sounds like ridonkulous 24 will become something of a giant commercial extolling the benefits of stem cells.

Oh baby, it’s on! It’s craigslist’s namesake, Craig Newmark, the Daimyo of the Internets, live, in person, at San Francisco’s Fort Mason (right next to Green’s Restaurant, AFAIK) this Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday, March 24th, 2009 at 7:30 PM.
Here’s the problem, though - this affair is open to the general public and it’s free and there’s beer and wine afterwards, so tickets are going to go like hotcakes. Don’t look for them here at the tickets section of CL, just go to this page to get in on the action.
Is Craig a pimp? Perhaps moderator Douglas McGray, Irvine Fellow, New America Foundation will ask about that:

It’s ON!

craigslist.org may be the only site where you can get anything you need for life cheap, or even for free. The free community classifieds service, launched as an email listserv for San Franciscans in 1995, helps over 50 million monthly users find homes, jobs, cars, stuff, spouses, friends and flings. The site’s simple design and old age (in Internet company years) hasn’t kept it from being at the pulse of online life. craigslist is one of the top internet websites registering over 13 billion page views per month. The daily flurry of activity on the site has created a full-fledged culture of craigslist in communities around the world–even as most on the site simply want to sell or acquire something, many users participate in ongoing conversations. Founder Craig Newmark visits Zócalo to talk about the web and social change, net neutrality and government transparency, education, and political causes like supporting veterans and building a stable environment for peace on the West Bank.
The New America Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute based in Washington, D.C.

Click here to see the latest version of the proposed Chevy Volt “series hybrid” gas-electric car from General Motors. Yes, that’s a fake grill on the nose of the car – apparently, all Chevies gots to have a grille whether they need it or not.
But that’s the way this “boring, boring, boring” vehicle will look once it gets to production.
But look below to see what the Chevy Volt looked like less than a year ago when it visited San Francisco.

Nobody expected these 22-inch wheels (complete with ”not for road use” Michelin Green-X tires”) to make it into production, but the folks at Chevy could have tried a little harder to drag the show car dream into existence.
Comes now Toyota with the third-generation Prius that might get a plug-in option at the end of next year. GM better hurry if it wants to get the Volt on the road before then.
But at least Hollywood’s Michael Bay is doing all he can to help. Having honed his skillz directing Scarlett Johansen (as Jordan Two Delta) in The Island, he’s now working on fitting the Chevy Volt into Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
But sadly, this little Chevy will just drive around and not transform into a robot or have any lines with Optimus Prime (known as Convoy in Japan).
Oh well…

It’s August, so it must be time to review the new 2009 cars? Not at the San Francisco Chronicle, where 2008 models get the full treatment. An entirely new model is just around the corner, but that fact goes unacknowledged. (In mitigation, we get a simile or two.)
This is what the new model looks like, FYI. Here’s more, where the existing 2008 model gets ripped for be “oddly designed.”
But if you want to explore the difference between the words “fast” and “rapid,” you’ve come to the right place. What does the article say that you couldn’t guess from just looking at the car or at BMW’s website? The World Wonders.
Testing the new model on the streets of L.A. last Spring:

Perhaps the purpose of the article is just fill the space between car dealership ads on a Friday?
O.K. fine.
