Shanghai Metro, the MUNI of the Largest City in the World, Tells Women to Dress Primly – Protest Ensues

Monday, July 2nd, 2012

First of all, MUNI* sucks, let’s just get that out of the way.

Second of all, look what happened when Shanghai Metro over there in the People’s Republic of China used its Tumblrish/Twtterish microblogging website to lecture women about how to dress, you know, to decrease the chances of getting groped and whatnot.

See? It’s all:

“乘坐地铁,穿成这样,不被骚扰,才怪。地铁狼较多,打不胜打,人狼大战,姑娘,请自重啊!”

Now it’s been a while since my days at Hereford, but I think that means:

“Subway, dressed like that, and not be harassed, strange. More subway wolf, playing numerous fight the war of crying wolf, girl, please behave!”

Get it? If you dress like a ho, you’ll get treated like one, by the subway wolves.

And here’s the photo that Shanghai’s subway agency grabbed to make its point:

But now there’s a quiet protest going on.

Like right here.

Like people are wearing burkas to say, “What do you want to do, impose Sharia Law?”

What a burn.

I’ll tell you, one thing the Red Chinese hate, just hate, is underground protest movements. They can’t abide.

Like remember this one from a few years ago? It seems that a group of people wanted to Stop the Killing in Tibet so they had this gal suspend herself from the Chinese Consulate right there at Geary and Laguna.

Thusly:

Man, the people inside the consulate went berserk over this one. They ended up going to the roof to cut her down. (Lucky for her she was just 15 feet above a balcony – if she had fallen to the sidewalk below, it could have been fatal.) And then they blocked the SFFD from taking her to SF General to get her leg injuries treated. (You know, back then, the PRC was kind of a pariah nation.)

Anywho, my point is that the Chinese Communist Party can’t abide** protest, even little ones about proper dress codes, so it will be interesting to see what happens when Democracy finally finds its way to China. Perhaps the CCP would end up the winner in a fair election. Who knows.

But little things, like “underground” performance art protests, have a tendency to turn into bigger things.

Sometimes.

We’ll see.

*I mean I don’t think you should ever broach the topic of the SFMTAMUNIDPT without saying up front that MUNI sucks, that MUNI has lots and lots of room for improvement. This kind of constructive criticism displays the fact that you don’t think that MUNI is the Best Darn Agency in the World or something like that. So you could say, “Of course MUNI sucks, but I think that we should keep on building that horrible Central Subway.” That would be interesting, huh? That would show at least that you acknowledge reality and also that you feel that paying the Feds back their $200,000,000 or so would be a burden on the City and County. And then somebody else might counter with, “Yeah, we should make a deal with the Feds not to spend good money after bad  - maybe  let’s just forget the whole thing and let’s not require repayment of the money back to the US Treasury. That would be a win-win for San Francisco and all the taxpayers of America.” Or something like that.  Now you’re on the trolley!

**Hey, now let’s hear from Mayor Ed Lee “advisor” / Chinese Consulate “advisor” Chinatown “Power Broker” Rose Pak, you know, from back in the day, after she descended from her taxpayer-financed, below-market condo penthouse in District Six:

“When asked what message she would like to convey to the Chinese government, Pak said, ‘On what moral ground do we have as United States citizens lecturing what China should do when our own President would drum up falsehoods and bomb Iraq back to the stone-age, killing several hundred thousand innocent Iraqis. Look at all the problems in the world, (they) are all created by Western countries with their phony-baloney moral standards,’ Pak added.”

So, duuuuuuude, hey dude, lay off the Red Bull.

Here’s another shot, with more contrast. It shows the classy URL of the Rockstar. See? By the time ROCKST★R Founder Russell Goldencloud Weiner (son of right-wing radio host Michael Savage!) hopped aboard the energy drink train, www.RockStar.com was already taken. So he added the number 69 as a differentiator for the URL.

Stay classy, ROCKST★R!

To review:

1. Slow down, Rockstar driver! You’ll give yourself a heart attack;

2. Stay classy, Rockstar founder! Heh, “69″ heh. You so crazy!

“San Francisco Police Announce the Formation of a New Special Victims Investigations Unit
11-109

San Francisco Police Chief Gregory Suhr is proud to announce the formation of the first ever San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) Special Victims Unit (S.V.U.).

For the first time in SFPD history, various investigative units have been assembled in one office to focus on the sensitive nature of crimes where in the victims have suffered the effects of Domestic Violence, Elder Abuse, Child Abuse & Exploitation or Sex Crimes. A majority of these victims are women, children or elderly.

Additional investigative assignments within the S.V.U. are: Human Trafficking, Stalking, Sexual Offender Registration Program, Financial Crimes and Missing Persons. The centralizing of these respective investigative disciplines will provide the public with better access to police and victims’ services. The “La Casa De Las Madres” advocate office is located in the S.V.U. office lobby. This in one example of the critical partnerships between the SFPD and the many victims advocates such as: Woman Against Rape, Institute of Aging, Trauma Recovery Center, San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center, W.O.M.A.N. Inc., Domestic Violence Consortium, Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach and S.F. Women Against Rape.”

Cold Busted: SFPD Arrests Sexual Assault Suspect Just Two Weeks Before Statute of Limitations Bar

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Nine years and something months later, the SFPD makes an arrest:

SFPD ARREST SUSPECT IN 10 YEAR OLD BRUTAL COLD CASE SEXUAL ASSAULT
11-103 Posted Date: 9/27/2011

The San Francisco Police Department’s Sex Crimes Detail Cold Case Unit made an arrest in a 10 year old sexual assault case. The incident occurred on November 6, 2001 in San Francisco, CA and the suspect was arrested on September 26, 2011 in San Jose, CA. The victim in this incident was offered a ride from the Mission District to her home. The three suspects then drove with the victim to Golden Gate Park and parked their car in an isolated dark area of the park were they sexually assaulted and robbed her. The victim was then ordered out of the suspect vehicle and had to flag down a passing motorist for assistance.

Due to the diligent work of the Sex Crimes Unit and Violence Reduction Team, in addition to the advent in today’s technology, the San Francisco Police Department was able to identify the suspect as Vinh Q. Chung, Vietnamese, Male, 10/26/1981. Chung was taken into custody at his home by members of the San Francisco Police Department’s Violent Reduction Team. He is currently being held at the County Jail in lieu of 5 million dollars bail.”

How about that?

She Works Hard for the Money: Know Better Your Belted Kingfishers of GGP – Reverse Sexual Dimorphism

Monday, September 12th, 2011

As far as these Kingfishers are concerned, the girls are the pretty ones and the boys have to make do without the namesake rust-colored belt. Wiki calls it reverse sexual dimorphism.

As seen on the island at South Lake in Golden Gate Park, 40th Ave and Lincoln:

This is the closest I’ve ever been to a Belted Kingfisher, as seen through one of these, which cost 100 times as much as the tripod I used it on. (I can’t be lugging monstrous $700 carbon fiber tripods all over town easily so these days I only have lenses in the 6-pounds-and-under-category. Tripods are not for me, I’ve decided.)

Check Out this Historic Walt Disney Company Employee Handbook – It’s an Amazing Time Capsule from 1943

Monday, September 5th, 2011

Well, via the Walt Disney Family Museum‘s* Storyboard Blog, here’s the official Walt Disney Productions new employee handbook from 1943.

It’s called The Ropes at Disney’s.

Here’s a sample:

Professionally scanned-in** by Digital Assets Coordinator Mark Gibson – click to expand

See if you wouldn’t consider this handbook evidence of a hostile work environment, you know, from the standpoint of this day and age. Note that women got twice as many sick days as men, but they weren’t allowed access to the rooftop employee lounge.

Also, back in the day, some dreamed of impractical shoes while others dreamed of dating those who dreamed of impractical shoes. (Oh, well, maybe that’s just like today – nothing’s changed on that score.)

No matter, the long-torsoed guy is quite the ogler.

And check it, Disney pioneered workplace casual dress – it was called “Businesslike Informality,” so neckties were banned.

Enjoy.

*Located in San Francisco’s Presidio, not too far from the Golden Gate Bridge.

**I have a color checker that’s just like the one you can see in the corner there, except mine’s all crinkled up now. These things are expensive.

Oscar and Johnny of San Jose Need to Contact the SFPD About This Rape Allegation

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Just saying. The dragnet is closing in, it would appear…

San Francisco Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying three suspects who kidnapped and sexually assaulted a woman at approximately 3:30am on August 7, 2010.

The 25 year old victim was standing at Van Ness and California at 3:30am on August 7, 2010, when she was approached by three men driving in a black VW Golf, hatchback-style vehicle. The victim agreed to a ride with the suspects, back to her hotel in the South of Market area. As the victim attempted to get out of the vehicle, one of the men pulled her back in the car as the driver sped off. The victim was dragged for a short distance, driven to a remote area near Cesar Chavez and the 101 Freeway and sexually assaulted. The victim suffered injuries to her feet, legs and neck. She was treated for her injuries and released.

The three suspects told the victim that they were from San Jose and were celebrating one of the men’s 18th birthday.

The victim was able to assist in creating a sketch for two of the suspects. They are described as:

1. “Oscar“, Hispanic male, 18-25 yrs., 5’6″, 145 lbs., wearing dark baseball hat, black “Ed Hardy” shirt with lettering across neck.

2. “Johnny“, HM, 5’7″, 150 lbs., dark fade-like haircut, wearing olive green buttoned shirt

3. Unknown, HM, 21-22, heavy set, with dark wavy hair (driver of vehicle)

Vehicle description:

2002-2005, BLACK, VW Golf, 4-dr., hatchback.

Police are seeking assistance from the public, who may be able to identify these suspects or who may have information regarding this incident. Police encourage anyone who believes that they have been the victim of a sexual assault to report it to the police or respond to the San Francisco Rape Treatment Center located at San Francisco General Hospital as soon as possible. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sexual Assault Unit, Inspector Sidney Laws or Lt. Dan Leydon at 553-1361.

Home Country of Assault Victim Rests Easy After San Francisco Attack

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

I’ll tell you, the reason why the home county of the exchange student who was recently sexually asaulted in San Franciscois resting easy these days is that the media of said home country isn’t aware of the attack. And why’s that? Apparently, it’s the policy of San Francisco to not give out that kind of information. Per the SF Appeal:

“Police are not releasing information about the country the alleged victim is from in order to protect her identity, Tomioka said.”

I’m wondering how small a country has to be such that saying its name discloses the identity of any particular tourist in San Francisco.

IMG_8524-copy

Like if there’s a famous exchange program in Monaco (population 30k) and they send ten students a year to the States? That would seem to fit the bill, fair enough.

But what if the exchange student is from one of the following Big Ten tourist-producing countries (countries avec concomitant robust, aggresive media, of course)?

Germany

United Kingdom

France

China

Italy

Japan

Canada

Russia

South Korea

Mexico

If the student is from one of these countries, I’d be hard-pressed to see how saying the name of the country would identify any particular person from that country. Maybe there’s a written policy, or maybe there’s an unwritten rule, the way the MSM won’t report routine cases of Golden Gate Bridge jumpings?

That is all.
