The Crowded Sidewalks of Bush Street: Is There Room for Chairs Betwixt “Curry Up Now” and “Coffee Cultures?”

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013

Uh, no, there’s not.

See?

Ah, here’s a quieter time between the most popular food truck in the bay area and the new cawfee shawp inside of the Standard Oil Building at 225 Bush:

Now I’ll tell you, I couldn’t care less* about this issue, but you? You have a lot of time on your hands…

If I were in charge, I’d probably say thumbs down on the street furniture, but I’d allow them some signage.

Of course, I’m not in charge and, as stated, I don’t care.

Super don’t care.

As always, I’ll find a way** to navigate the Streets of San Francisco regardless.

Courage.

*Obviously, things are going to be a bit crowded at lunchtime, ’cause that curry truck is uber popular. OTOH, passersby might not ever realize that’s there’s a new upscale coffee place there unless they see people hanging about sipping away. (This reminds me of parklets, which some business owners think they own because the process for getting one is so costly.)

**But I don’t use a wheelchair…

Via Seth N:

“To my great dismay, I stopped by to get my hair cut today, only to find the place boarded up. It seems the barbers have moved on to other places.

Kevin has moved to 1315 Fillmore, just down the street, while Al and Gail have moved to Esquire Barber Shop at 1826 Geary Blvd.

I’ve been getting my hair cut her e since 2006, and it’s a shame to see such a place just disappear. The barbers were nice, remembered me even after I left the city for a couple years, and always fixed me up right. Plus, the moment you walked in you could feel the history of the place, there was a nice feel there.

I wish the staff all the best, and I’ll be seeking out Kevin soon at his new location.”

Look past those crates of three-litre Jeroboams and gaze upon this giant fifteen-litre bottle of Taittinger Brut Champagne at Costco #144 in SoMA:

Or you can buy local,* so to speak, from D&M Liquors, that famous booze shop on Fillmore.

Viva La France!

Viva La Costco!

*But buying local in this case would cost you hundreds more, as buying local oftentimes does…

“This large format of Taittinger Brut La Française Champagne is “Elegant, distinctive and impeccably crisp, with a spicy bouquet that suggests clove and mint. Stylish, concentrated and tightly focused, this is a classy fizz that extends gracefully through an immaculately clean finish.” EDITORS’ CHOICE. Score: 92, The Wine Enthusiast. A Nebuchadnezzar is equal to 20 regular bottles.”

Those Chevy Volt Hybrid Owners Drive All Right, But They Don’t Park So Hot – “It’s OK, I Drive an Electric Car”

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

First of all, the Chevy Volt hybrid car is a hybrid car. Yeah, I know it was going to be an electric car, but GM lied to us all, which is its right to, but a hybrid is a hybrid, right>

Second of all, sales of the the Chevy Volt hybrid car are abysmal, so that’s why you don’t see them causing a bunch of accidents, you know, the way the drivers of a hybrid car line from another manufacturer are famous for. I can’t recall seeing a crazy driving maneuver done in a Volt.

Third of all, Volt drivers park in the craziest places, as if they think they’re special.

Thusly:

That’s the MO of one Volter, like every day.

The driver prolly thinks you are stupid for not parking in crosswalks yourself.

Big Skate: Skateboard Trade Group Attacks Supervisor John Avalos Over His Concerns re: Mountain Dew Tour

Monday, October 22nd, 2012

Hey, remember that whole sit / lie deal in Haight Ashbury? Well, the people behind the sit lie initiative are the same people behind the “San Francisco Skateboarding Association” and this new press release.

Enjoy:

“Skateboard Group Condemns Supervisor for Criticism of Free Civic Center Event

The San Francisco Skateboarding Association had strong words for a San Francisco Supervisor critical of the skateboard and BMX contest held in the Civic Center Plaza this weekend. The event is free and open to the public.

“By publicly condemning the Mountain Dew Tour in their inaugural year in SF, Supervisor John Avalos continued a practice perfected by our parents’ generation of elected leaders: bash skateboarders and deny us access to public spaces in San Francisco,” said Bryan Hornbeck, President of the SF Skateboard Association.

In the mid-80’s San Francisco became the birthplace of a worldwide phenomenon known as “streetstyle” skateboarding, where skaters utilize man made structures to express themselves* in ways no architect ever imagined. The Dew Tour brings professional athletes from around the world to compete in a world-class skatepark. Local riders also get to participate. On Sunday, the skatepark will be open to the public for a community skate session.

San Francisco is also home to Thrasher Magazine, an internationally recognized skateboard publication and several high profile skateboard companies and retail establishments. The Dew Tour at Civic Center is seen as an economic boon to the San Francisco skateboard industry that employs hundreds of people, mostly under the age of 30.

“To us, this is the Super Bowl of skateboarding. Our store has seen a huge amount of traffic for the past two weeks because of the Dew Tour. This helps our business, which in turn helps our employees. Maybe Supervisor Avalos is upset that they took away his parking space in front of City Hall, but it’s a small price to pay for promoting our industry to the world,” said Kent Uyehara, owner of FTC Skateboard Shop on Haight St.

Organizers of the event say that thousands of hotel rooms have been booked for the participants and their families and that the event is being streamed and broadcast on network television to millions worldwide.

The S.F.S.A. seeks to advocate for skateboarders of San Francisco through organized representation and community action. The S.F.S.A. wants to improve the public’s perception of skateboarders through education, information distribution and community outreach with a focus on the creation of public skateboard parks for the youth of our great city. http://sfskateboarding.wordpress.com/”

OK fine.

Oh, what’t this, Central Freeway skate park? Rly? Hey, what about a Central Subway skate park – I’d like to see that.

*Now I’ll tell you, I don’t know if the BOMA people would approve of this…

Video: “Black Bloc” “Street Battle” with SFPD on Oct 6 – “Fuck Columbus Day” – 22 Arrested in the Financh

Sunday, October 7th, 2012

Well, yesterday’s West Coast Anti-Colonial, Anti-Capitalist March didn’t last all that long, as this four-minute video will show you:

OK then.

(The revolution won’t be televised but it will be on the Facebook, apparently.)

communique:

Columbus Day 2012 marks the 520 year anniversary of the genocidal and ecocidal project of Empire building and colonial expansion that began with the conquistador invasion of this continent and continues to this day through the daily violence and exploitation of global capitalism.

It also marks the 20 year anniversary of the first American Black Bloc which disrupted the 1992 Columbus Day Parade in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood.

This year during Columbus Day weekend, a West Coast Anti-Colonial, Anti-Capitalist convergence is being organized in San Francisco. As a contribution to this effort, we are calling for friends and comrades to gather at 2pm on Saturday, October 6 for a rowdy march through the heart of the city’s financial district.

We will honor the memories of all those who fought back and resisted the onslaught of empire over the past five centuries by unleashing the power of our own resistance in the very heart of capitalism on the West Coast. We are proud to stand in solidarity with others whose fierce struggles continue to hold off the machinery of domination and exploitation.

We draw inspiration from the countless struggles of indigenous resistance to capitalist projects of development and expansion: from the mountains of Black Mesa, where elders fiercely protect their way of life in the shadow of a coal mine, to the rebel autonomous municipality of Chéran in Michoacán, México where both the repressive forces of the state and the drug cartels have been expelled while loggers infringing upon indigenous territory have been chased off communal lands, to the far north of Canada where indigenous peoples block roads and disrupt plans for expanding resource extraction while students and radicals in Montreal riot outside the gates of the Plan du Nord summit. These brave fighters motivate us to spread the fires of resistance in the ongoing struggles against colonialism and capitalism.

It is also fitting that October 7 marks the 11 year anniversary of the US invasion of Afghanistan, another brutal example of colonial domination’s recent manifestations. We invite all those who stand in opposition to Empire and in solidarity with the struggles of the Afghan people to join us on this march.

The Anti-Colonial, Anti-Capitalist March will gather at Justin Herman Plaza for a rally at 2pm and the march will begin at 3pm sharp. Stay tuned for additional details and ways to get involved.

This action is part of the Decolonize the New World 2012: West Coast Anti-Colonial, Anti-Capitalist Convergence in San Francisco during Columbus Day weekend. The convergence is being called for by Decolonize and Anti-Capitalist comrades in the Pacific Northwest and Bay Area.

SFPD:

Officer Injured, Weapons Recovered from Protesters in the Financial District on 10/6/12

On October 6, 2012 at approximately 2:50pm, a group of protesters gathered at Justin Herman Plaza.  The group began a unpermitted march west bound on Market Street.  The group, a number of them wearing black clothing, masks covering their faces, took to the streets disrupting the normal flow of traffic.  Officers arrived in the area and were struck by projectiles thrown at them by members of this group.  One officer was struck in the head and sustained non-life threatening injuries.  The protesters were admonished multiple times that the march was unpermitted and there were causing a public safety hazard.
When the group failed to leave the roadway, Officers encircled them at California and Battery and the protesters threw flares and bags of paint at the officers.  Some of the bags of paint contained rocks.  A portion of this group ran to the area of Pine and Sansome where they were detained. A number of police officers and their uniforms were covered in paint.
Police made approximately 22 arrests from both locations.  The suspects were arrested on one or more of the following charges: conspiracy, riot, refusing to obey a lawful order from a peace officer and resisting, delaying and obstructing a peace officer, and assault and battery on a peace officer.  A lawful search of the arrested suspects’ backpacks revealed that many were armed with hammers, an ice pick, flares and other weapons and more bags of paint containing rocks.  The suspects vandalized vehicles and businesses as the walked.  Any witnesses to these acts of vandalism are encouraged to notify the SFPD.  Attached are photos of some of the weapons the protesters had in their possession.”
See you next year!

Cat Burglar and Cat Woman Steal a Bubenreuth Cello from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music? Photos

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

The Reddit Community is going crazy over this one.

Is this what it would look like if Anne Hathaway / Parker Posey (on the left) and Bobby Flay (on the right) conspired to steal a little violone from San Francisco’s world-famous Conservatory of Music in Civic Center / Hayes Valley?

From yesterday:

“Hey Reddit, my son’s very expensive cello was stolen from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music yesterday. Here are the surveillance pics from security that show a young couple making-off with my son’s primary instrument. FWIW, this instrument is one of the most expensive things I have ever owned. It was stolen around 4:05 PM on Sunday, September 16th, 2012. These people are nonchalantly making-off with a full-size cello that was purchased when my son graduated from a smaller cello when he was 12. We’ve owned it for 11 years. He’s in the collegiate division at the San Francisco Conservatory and it is not only the vehicle for his ability to obtain a classical music degree, but is also his sole source of income, as he uses it in performances and recordings. We’ll be doing a media blitz tomorrow with local stations and the SFPD, but I’m hoping the community can help. Any leads are incredibly appreciated.”

All the photos.

Do you have enough Clues? Who will solve this mystery?

(Is it Mrs. Peacock in the Conservatory with a Revolver?)

Gascon’s Boner: Kokkari-Boozing Drunk Driver Kills a Tourist Then Runs – But Only a Year in Jail for Joshua Calder?

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

Wow, this case ended up with a plea bargain for just twelve months in jail?

The case of Nils Linke used to be a BFD.

See?

But late last month it evaporated into nothingness, into a simple jail term.

So, you can booze it up at world-famous Kokkari restaurant, run over a German tourist despite your gf yelling at you to look out, get out of the car to move the German tourist’s bike off of the road (no, not him himself, just the bike, you leave the dude himself to die), get back into the car after switching seats with the gf, and then drive away, and your punishment, years later, will be, what six months, eight months, in county jail because that’s what District Attorney George Gascon is willing to sign off on. No trial, no nothing, just a plea deal.

So what would Joshua Calder have gotten without the hitting and the running and the seat switching? Three months? Community service?

Mmmm….
