Monday, November 14th, 2011

Wow, another winner from Justin Beck:

Upon further review, it turns out that the roller skater is not wearing a tutu. Quel dommage!

But anyway, another ballet season is coming in less than a month at our San Francisco Ballet, starting with the bay area version of The Nutcracker and then the entire 2012 season proper in January. Hurray!

Don’t Ever Change, Sunday “Skatin’ Place” at Sixth and Fulton, Where the 70′s (and Michael Jackson) Will Never Die

Monday, June 20th, 2011

This was the scene during yesterday’s “Healthy”* Sunday in Golden Gate Park.

Now, the other kind, inline skating, well, who knows about that, but no matter, roller disco will never die, looks like.

So get over to JFK Jr near 6th Avenue on Sundays and Skate, Bounce, Rock, Roll (feel free to mix up these imperatives as you please) forever:

Hurray!

Roller Skating Man Beats MUNI at Its Own Game – Why Don’t More Commuters Skate to Work? – Is It Quasi-Legal?

Friday, November 12th, 2010

This fellow on inline skates acquitted himself favorably while getting to work the other day.

Now, is it legal to commute to work by skating these days on the Streets of San Francisco?

Don’t know. Or maybe it’s illegal but it’s one of those Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell things.

Certainly this would be faster than MUNI, that’s for sure…

Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak Aspires to be a Roller Derby Referee in Haight Ashbury

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Owing to Program 4 at the San Francisco Ballet, I missed my chance to see Steve Wozniak emcee the Bay City Bombers’ season opener last weekend. But this short vid eases the pain. Will this Apple co-founder join in on the fun in the near future?

You Make The Call.

The Woz at Kezar Pavilion on Stanyan last Saturday:

Your next chance to pay $10 to see banked tracked roller derby comes up May 1st, 2010, when Orlando’s finest rollers come to town.

See you there!

Pay $10 to See Steve Wozniak Host Roller Derby in Haight Ashbury, March 6th

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Via SFist comes the news of Steve “The Woz” Wozniak starting up the Roller Derby game at Kezar Pavillion at 775 Stanyan Street just up from Haight this Saturday, March 6th, 2010.

Will he bring his Segway along, or maybe Steve Jobs too? We Can Only Hope. Tickets still on sale.

After this, maybe San Francisco will get it’s own ‘Woz Way” the way they have it down in San Hoser.

Your Bay City Bombers in action on the banked track. Ask yourselves, if it’s not on a banked track is it really Roller Derby?

Embarcadero Center Winter Carnival and Lighting Ceremony a Huge Success

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Last Friday’s Winter Carnival and Lighting Ceremony at the Financial District’s Embarcadero Center certainly was well-attended – maybe it was all the free garage parking. There were so many kids around, it made San Francisco look like a regular town instead of haven for cranky empty-nester NIMBYs.

Anywho, Mayor Gavin Newsom was there with the swells, getting “back into the swing of things,” apparently. Per Willie Brown:

(My submission to produce Soul on Ice on Ice at this rink was rejected once again this year. Oh well.)

A Sure Sign of Winter – They’re Putting NorCal’s Largest Outdoor Skating Rink Up Again

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

This is the scene down at Justin Herman Plaza these days – it’s northern California’s Largest Outdoor Skating Rink, destined to open sometime this month.

Achtung! Ice ice, baby!

Will it be named in honor of bay area Olympian Kristy Yamaguchi this year, the way it was back in the day? Probably not. Oh well.

The Roller Skaters of Golden Gate Park Know How to Have a Good Time

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

Just look at these people oscillate wildly on a pleasant Sunday in Golden Gate Park at 368 John F Kennedy Jr Drive near Fulton and 6th Avenue.

You’d think some group would come along to put an end to this footloose tomfoolery, but be patient – somebody will find a reason to put a stop to this, soon enough.

Furry, bright red mukluks (as modeled by David Miles, Jr., the “Godfather of Skating”) strictly optional, as are skates, apparently. Let your freak flag fly, people. Click to expand:

In the meantime, cue the music and get on out there to the Skatin’ Place, which is not far from the Sundays-only, free, beginners-welcome Lindy in the Park swing dance thing.

Bring your flashlight if you want to stay late.

See you there!

When: Sundays, 12pm – 6pm
Where: Skatin’ Place – 6th Ave. and JFK Drive – San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park (map)
Description: Every Sunday Kennedy Drive in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park is closed to auto traffic. The roadway is transformed into a 21st century recreational paradise where skaters, bikes, runners and other park users use the asphalt to have a great time. There is a special area at 6th Avenue and Kennedy Drive called, “Skatin’ Place”. Here skaters boogie to the music all day long. They glide with style and grace. Some work on skate dance routines. Others hone their skills on the slalom course. Many sit on the hillside and watch in awe. It is the greatest example of a public outdoor roller rink in the middle of Golden Gate Park.

The Best Time to Roller Skate in Golden Gate Park is at Night

At least that’s what these people think.
