“NASA, American Geophysical Union Host NASA Social In San Francisco

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14, 2012  – NASA and the American Geophysical Union are inviting social media followers to a unique behind-the-scenes NASA Social on Tuesday, Dec. 4, in San Francisco. The event will bring 20 social media users together with some of the world’s best and brightest scientific minds at the world’s largest Earth and solar system science conference.

NASA Socials are in-person meetings with people who engage with the agency through Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and other social networks. Participants will get special access to parts of the AGU meeting and meet with NASA and other scientists presenting research on Earth’s climate, deep ocean exploration and the latest findings from Mars. Additionally, guests will sit in on a press conference, attend a panel on deep ocean exploration with film-maker James Cameron and a NASA astrobiologist, explore the expansive exhibit hall, and meet fellow science enthusiasts who are active on social media.

Registration is open from noon EST Wednesday, Nov. 14, to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16. NASA and the AGU will select 20 participants at random from Web registrants. Additional applicants will be placed on a waiting list. Because of space limitations, those selected will not be permitted to bring a guest. Each participant must be age 18 or older. “California Senate Approves Social Media Privacy Act - Yee’s SB 1349 will prohibit employers, colleges from seeking Facebook, Twitter passwords

SACRAMENTO – On a bipartisan 28-5 vote, the California Senate today approved legislation authored by Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) to stop employers from formally requesting or demanding employees or job applicants provide their social media usernames and passwords.

Yee’s bill also prohibits public and private colleges and universities from requiring such information of students.

The bill comes after a growing number of businesses, public agencies, and colleges around the country are asking job seekers, workers, and students for their Facebook and Twitter account information.

“I am pleased by today’s overwhelming vote to end this unacceptable invasion of personal privacy,” said Yee. “The practice of employers or colleges demanding social media passwords is entirely unnecessary and completely unrelated to someone’s performance or abilities.”

In addition to the privacy of students and workers, accessing social media accounts may also invade the privacy of family members and friends who thought they only were sharing information with their own social media network.

“These social media outlets are often for the purpose of individuals to share private information – including age, marital status, religion, sexual orientation and personal photos – with their closest friends and family,” said Yee. “This information is illegal for employers and colleges to use in making employment and admission decisions and has absolutely no bearing on a person’s ability to do their job or be successful in the classroom.”

“SB 1349 is a significant step towards securing Californians’ constitutional right to privacy, both online and offline, in the workplace and in school,” said Jon Fox, Consumer Advocate for CALPIRG.

“If employers are permitted to access the private information of job applicants, unscrupulous hiring managers will be given greater leeway to circumvent anti-discrimination laws,” said Joe Ridout of Consumer Action.

Rather than formally requesting passwords and usernames, some employers have demanded applicants and employees to sit down with managers to review their social media content or fully print out their social media pages. SB 1349 will also prohibit this practice.

Shannon Minter, Legal Director for National Center for Lesbian Rights, said that the practice of requesting social media passwords is the equivalent to reading a personal diary, and also LGBT employees, job applicants, and students already face significant obstacles when applying for schools and jobs.

Minter said that SB 1349 helps ensures individuals are “judged by their qualifications and performance, rather than elements of their private life.”

IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law professor Lori Andrews, who specializes in Internet privacy, told the Associated Press that these practices even when given voluntarily should not be allowed.

“Volunteering is coercion if you need a job,” Andrews told the AP.

Johnny Veloz, an unemployed photographer, told KCRA Sacramento that he was asked for his Facebook password during a recent job interview. Veloz was denied the job after refusing to provide the information.

“For me, that’s rude and it’s not respectful,” Veloz told KCRA. “Someone has privacy and you expect them to respect that.”

Yee’s bill would also prohibit employers and colleges from demanding personal email addresses and login information of employees, applicants, and students.

SB 1349 will now be considered by the State Assembly before heading to the Governor.”

And oh, if I ever crafted a “social media privacy act,” I can just about guarantee you that Facebook WOULD NOT LIKE IT. Not one bit.

“Food Deserts: Legal, Social, and Public Health Challenges

The UCSF / UC Hastings Consortium on Law, Science & Health Policy is sponsoring a conference entitled “Food Deserts: Legal, Social, and Public Health Challenges” on Food Day, October 24, 2011.
The conference will bring together scholars from the health sciences and the law, as well as policymakers, activists, and food industry members, to discuss two important aspects of “food deserts,” places where access to a nutritionally-adequate diet is severely restricted.

One panel, Nourishing Our Neighborhoods: Insights from Law, Planning, and Industry, will cover the broad issue of geographical food deserts, usually urban areas inhabited by mostly-poor people whose transportation and finances are limited, where food sellers are predominantly small stores that cannot stock a wide variety of fresh food items, and where full-service grocery stores hesitate to locate. Are there policies (such as those in zoning rules) that could be changed to enable oases in these food deserts? What impact does, for example, the addition of a full-service grocery store have on the health of the neighboring area?

Another panel, Food and Nutrition in Correctional Institutions, will consider issues relevant to prisons and jails. While food offerings must meet certain basic caloric and nutritional requirements, the institutional nature of food preparation and food service might make that food less than appealing, and the healthier elements of meals might well be those not regularly or fully consumed. The supplemental food offerings – those for sale in these institutions – are not likely to be nutritious. Some research suggests that improved nutrition in prisons leads to improved penal outcomes. If that is so, what policy changes should be implemented? Would such changes be cost-beneficial, considering penal outcomes and the government’s responsibility for health care of prisoners?

At 5 pm, Dr. David Kessler, former Commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration and Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology and Biostatistics, UCSF, will give the keynote address on The End of Overeating. This conference will be free and open to the public.”

“SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 13, 2011 — Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist and craigconnects, today released an infographic detailing the use of social media by leading nonprofit organizations. The infographic is available for viewing on Newmark’s Facebook page at http://on.fb.me/r7pm9H

“How the Top 50 Nonprofits Do Social Media” is a fact-filled, comprehensive look at which leading nonprofit organizations are most proactively and effectively using social media channels of communication like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, LinkedIn, and RSS feeds.

Do the highest earning nonprofits use social media the most effectively? Are they the most engaging? How are people responding and interacting? The infographic is intended to help answer those questions.

Findings revealed by the infographic include:

– 92 percent of the top 50 nonprofits have at least one social media
presence on their website homepage.
— PBS is the nonprofit organization with the most followers on Twitter -
840,653.
— The nonprofit following the most people on Twitter is the American
Cancer Society – 200,522.
— The American Red Cross was the first organization on the list to create
a Twitter account.
— Food for the Poor is the most talkative nonprofit on the list on
Facebook, and has posted 220 posts over the course of two months.
— The organization with the highest net income, the YMCA, only posted 19
times to Facebook in two months, but has over 24,000 fans.

Newmark, who often speaks at conferences on the value of social media outreach for nonprofits, said it appears that income does not increase a nonprofit’s visibility and interactions in the social media world. As shown on the infographic, some of the most social media savvy organizations are in the bottom quarter bracket in terms of income, yet they are clearly active on social media.

“The deal is, it’s not about money, it’s about getting people to talk with each other to make people’s lives better,” said Newmark.

FaceBook Uses Twitter to Tamp Down Rumor About FaceBook Shutting Down On March 15, 2011

You’re too young to remember, but there was a time when AOL was as big a deal as FaceBook is today. Hard to believe, right?

Anywho, it’s sort of humorous when the mighty FB needs to use Twitter to tamp down rumors about Facebook that got spread through FaceBook.

We didn’t get the memo about shutting down, so we’ll keep working away. We aren’t going anywhere; we’re just getting started.”

(Keep in mind that AOL kept working away, that AOL never really went anywhere, that AOL people used to think that they were “just getting started” as well.)

Keep in mind that the people who believe in and propagate rumors such as the one below will necessarily make up a larger percentage of the FaceBook Community in order for all the lofty goals of Mark Zuckerberg to come to fruition.

Will there soon be a “FaceBook for Young / Cool People” springing up? Mmmmm

PALO ALTO, CA –Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March. Managing the site has become too stressful.

“Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”

Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts.

“After March 15th the whole website shuts down,” said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. “So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business.”

Zuckerberg said that the decision to shut down Facebook was difficult, but that he does not think people will be upset.

“I personally don’t think it’s a big deal,” he said in a private phone interview. “And to be honest, I think it’s for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That’s always a good thing.”

Some Facebook users were furious upon hearing the shocking news.

“What am I going to do without Facebook?” said Denise Bradshaw, a high school student from Indiana. “My life revolves around it. I’m on Facebook at least 10 hours a day. Now what am I going to do with all that free time?”

However, parents across the country have been experiencing a long anticipated sense of relief.

“I’m glad the Facebook nightmare is over,” said Jon Guttari, a single parent from Detroit. “Now my teenager’s face won’t be glued to a computer screen all day. Maybe I can even have a conversation with her.”

Those in the financial circuit are criticizing Zuckerberg for walking away from a multibillion dollar franchise. Facebook is currently ranked as one of the wealthiest businesses in the world, with economists estimating its value at around 7.9 billion.

But Zuckerberg remains unruffled by these accusations. He says he will stand by his decision to give Facebook the axe.

I don’t care about the money,” said Zuckerberg. “I just want my old life back.”

The Facebook Corporation suggests that users remove all of their personal information from the website before March 15th. After that date, all photos, notes, links, and videos will be permanently erased.

“Herrera settles illicit guerilla marketing case with Davis Elen Advertising. Ad firm will pay $45,000 for vandalizing S.F. sidewalks, had previously removed some 4,000 ‘Mafia Wars’ decals

SAN FRANCISCO (Nov. 12, 2010) — City Attorney Dennis Herrera today announced a settlement agreement with Davis Elen Advertising over an illicit guerilla marketing campaign that the firm employed in August to promote a popular social media game for one of its clients.  Under terms of the agreement signed by the City Attorney’s Office today, Davis Elen Advertising will pay the City $45,000.  The Los Angeles-based ad agency had previously remedied its vandalism to San Francisco sidewalks after it was contacted by the Department of Public Works and City Attorney’s Office, and informed of the City’s intention to pursue legal action.

In August — in the wake of a widespread public outcry and several news accounts about the sudden appearance of thousands of dollar-like stickers defacing neighborhood sidewalks — Davis Elen Advertising issued a statement conceding that its marketers “led a series of street marketing activities throughout the City of San Francisco,” and that they “take full responsibility for the program.”  The company hired a subcontractor to vandalize 75 locations throughout San Francisco by gluing some 4,000 decals onto public sidewalks to promote the online game, “Mafia Wars” — unbeknownst to Zynga, the San Francisco-based social media gaming company for which Davis Elen was working.  The guerilla marketing tactic, which is a clear violation of state and local law, required Department of Public Works crews to use special steam cleaning equipment to remove the decals from vandalized sites.  But the City halted its own cleanup efforts when Davis Elen and its subcontractor agreed to remove the decals at their own expense, after being informed of the City’s resolve to seek legal remedies for the actionable tactics.  As a result, total costs to the City were limited to under $2,000.

“The so-called ‘guerilla marketers’ who deface public property in San Francisco may think they’re being clever, but they’re nothing more than lawless vandals-for-hire,” said Herrera.  “Graffiti vandalism is illegal, and when it’s done as corporate advertising, it’s also actionable as an unlawful business practice.  We take these violations seriously, and I’ll continue to pursue them aggressively to make sure there’s no profit motive for defacing our neighborhoods.  I’m very grateful to Zynga for its good corporate citizenship in working with us to identify the culprits, and I’m glad that Davis Elen Advertising accepted responsibility for its wrongdoing.  I’m also thankful to the Department of Public Works for their efforts, and to the many San Franciscans who took the time to call 311 to report these acts of vandalism.”
