San Francisco Residential Architecture 2014: (Expensive) Little Boxes on the Hillside, (Expensive) Little Boxes Made of Ticky Tacky

Wednesday, March 12th, 2014

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky,
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes all the same.

And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

Longboarding the Panhandle River: Good Tymez

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014

A modern-day warrior
Mean, mean stride
Today’s Tom Sawyer
Mean, mean pride

Though his mind is not for rent
Don’t put him down as arrogant
His reserve, a quiet defense
Riding out the day’s events
The river

The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his eyes are wide

Exit the warrior
Today’s Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the energy you trade
He gets right on to the friction of the day

The Laughable “Apology” Letter to the Beastie Boys from YouTube Sensation “Debbie + Team GoldieBlox”

Wednesday, November 27th, 2013

Hey look, it’s GoldieBloxeses’ “our letter to the Beastie Boys.”

Dear Adam and Mike,

We don’t want to fight with you. We love you and we are actually huge fans.

UH, LET ME CALL BULLSHIT ON THIS RIGHT NOW. YES YOU DID WANT TO FIGHT THEM. REMEMBER?

When we made our parody version of your song, ‘Girls’, we did it with the best of intentions.

WHO WROTE THIS, A LAWYER? THAT’S YOUR CONCLUSION, ABOUT THE PARODY, RIGHT? THIS IS AWFULLY “ON MESSAGE” FOR AN APOLOGY LETTER. AND YOU DID IT WITH THE BEST INTENTIONS? HOW DO WE KNOW THAT? I THINK YOU DID IT WITH THE PURPOSE OF MAKING MONEY. IS THAT A GOOD INTENTION?

We wanted to take a song we weren’t too proud of, and transform it into a powerful anthem for girls.

WHY WERE YOU NOT TOO PROUD OF IT? DID YOU WRITE IT, DO YOU OWN IT? I THINK IT’S THE BEASTIE BOYS THEMSELVES WHO HAVE ALREADY SAID THEY WEREN’T PROUD OF IT AND THAT WAS TWO DECADES AGO.

Over the past week, parents have sent us pictures and videos of their kids singing the new lyrics with pride, building their own Rube Goldberg machines in their living rooms and declaring an interest in engineering. It’s been incredible to watch.

IS THIS AN AD FOR YOUR COMPANY?

Our hearts sank last week when your lawyers called us with threats that we took very seriously.

YOUR HEARTS SANK? WHOSE? YOUR VC BACKERS’ AND YOURS?

As a small company, we had no choice but to stand up for ourselves.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? WHY DIDN’T YOU GET PERMISSION FIRST OR CHOOSE A DIFFERENT SONG OR MARKET YOURSELVES DIFFERENTLY? WHY NOT JUST STOP USING THE SONG? DID YOU EVER THINK OF THAT? HERE’S WHAT THE BOYS SAID: “When we tried to simply ask how and why our song “Girls” had been used in your ad without our permission, YOU sued US.” THAT WAS THE “THREAT.”

We did so sincerely hoping we could come to a peaceful settlement with you.

SINCERELY? BULLSHIT.

We want you to know that when we posted the video, we were completely unaware that the late, great Adam Yauch had requested in his will that the Beastie Boys songs never be used in advertising.

WELL GEE, IF YOU HAD ASKED, YOU WOULD HAVE LEARNED THAT, POSSIBLY, RIGHT? YOU DON’T REALLY NEED TO KNOW ALL THIS INFORMATION ANYWAY, RIGHT? YOU JUST NEED TO NOT INFRINGE, RIGHT? DON’T YOU KNOW THAT?

Although we believe our parody video falls under fair use, we would like to respect his wishes and yours.

SO, YOU’VE GOTTEN TONS OF FREE PUBLICITY FOR YOUR TOY COMPANY AND NOW YOU WANT TO RESPECT WISHES. OK FINE.

Since actions speak louder than words, we have already removed the song from our video.

NOT ON VIMEO, NOT YET, BUT PROLLY BY TOMORROW, SURE.

In addition, we are ready to stop the lawsuit as long as this means we will no longer be under threat from your legal team.

IS THIS FROM YOUR LAWYERS AGAIN? IS THIS THEIR SETTLEMENT OFFER? THE ONLY REASON YOU’RE UNDER “THREAT” IS BECAUSE OF YOUR ACTIONS, RIGHT?

We don’t want to spend our time fighting legal battles.

EVEN IF IT WILL GET YOU ATTENTION?  I DON’T BELIEVE IT.

We want to inspire the next generation. We want to be good role models. And we want to be your friends.

Sincerely,

Debbie + Team GoldieBlox

WHAT A CROCK OF SHIT. ALL RIGHT, WELL, HAPPY HOLIDAYS. OH WAIT, THE CHRISTMAS GIFT SEASON IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. WHAT A CONVENIENT TIME TO BECOME “FRIENDS,” WHAT A COINCIDENCE!

Working with experienced innovators from such companies as Pictionary and IDEO…”

Oh, So _That’s_ What the Central Subway Looks Like – A Giant Hole in the Ground at the Foot of Stockton – “Don’t Dig There!”

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

The Central Subway project might make sense politically (let’s take money from taxpayers from all over America to pay for a big project in our little-big city), but it doesn’t make sense from a transit standpoint.

Down down we go, under Market Street, under the MUNI Metro, and under the BART. When you pass by, you should crumple up all your ones and fives on you and throw them into this sinkhole because that’s what you’re already doing and what you will be doing far far into the future.

Oh, what’s that, “transit justice,” they say? Well, most of the victims of this project live in San Francisco and most of them aren’t caucasoids, so I don’t know what the fuck that phrase means in the context  of this ridiculous scheme.

The project promotes transit justice by providing reliable, efficient, and safe transit for those who live in Chinatown and those who want to visit Chinatown.”

Does City Attorney Dennis Herrera believe this bullshit? No. Does Supervisor Scott Wiener? No. How about closeted Republican Supervisor Mark Farrell? No. How about Board of Supervisors President David Chiu? No.

Oh well.

Don’t dig there and dig it elsewhere
You’re digging it round and it ought to be square
The shape of it is wrong, it’s much too long
And you can’t put a hole where a hole don’t belong

The Hole in the Ground” was a comic song which was written by Myles Rudge and composed by Ted Dicks. When recorded by Bernard Cribbins and released by EMI on the Parlophone label in 1962, it was a hit in the UK charts.[1][2]

The song is about a dispute between a workman digging a hole and an officious busybod y wearing a bowler hat. This exemplifies English class conflict of the era and Cribbins switches between a working class Cockney accent, in which he drops his aitches, and a middle class accent for the gentleman in the bowler hat.

Worst Earworm Ever: “Doin’ It Right from Daft Punk ft. Panda Bear – DO NOT LISTEN TO THE ATTACHED YOUTUBE

Friday, May 31st, 2013

This one, don’t listen to it:

I think I’m finally immune to this tune but only after ten days of having it set to repeat forever on my iPod Touch (5th Gen.)* and only after blowing out the 6.5″ Marc Levinson subwoofer (or driver? Or is it another speaker? IDK) in my Toyota Bland Cruiser.

And my ears still feel a little weird, oh well.

But after hearing the first five seconds for the first time, I was thinking, “Is this the entire song, just repeated over and over?” And it was! Pretty much, anyway.

And the reviews are in:

“So we’ve all had well over 24 hours with the Important (capital I) new Daft Punk record, Random Access Memories. The album is one that is uncompromising in vision and full of strange left turns and maybe some moments of genuine transcendence. “Doin’ It Right” with Panda Bear is probably one of those moments. Much like “Get Lucky,” with Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers, “Doin’ It Right” is a perfect example of the marriage of style and vision that Daft Punk has been trying to convey with their overwrought web series The Collaborators. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that all they had to do was play some music.”

More encomia:

“Pretty sure Daft Punk don’t give a fuck what people wanted to hear them make. They made the music – they – wanted to make. That’s Daft Punk all over, and they’re true musical innovators because of that.”

“…the 70′s are back…well then. Who wants to go down to the Discotheque?”

“This particular song is very addictive.”

“This is great for listening while stoned! 2:27 is completely awesome.”

“Thanks Daft Punk for bringing us back to the 70′s and to those amazing beats, I really love this album!!”

“I love daft punk and I love panda bear. Perfect combination!”

“Using samples doesn’t mean you’re not an innovator. They write and construct the songs, the samples are just a small part. Besides, this album has fewer samples than anything they’ve done.”

ALL HAIL DAFT PUNK.

If you lose your way tonight/
That’s how you know the magic’s right

*Yes, an iPod Touch. It cost almost as much as an iPad Mini but I don’t want an iPad Mini. Now if Microsoft had kept up with the Zune HD the past four years, iPods Touch would be a lot cheaper I’m sure. But if I lost it I would buy another. It’s my Walkman. It’s my Samsung Galaxy Note II’s lil buddy.
