The Apple Retail Workers Union just had its first birthday. Here are the deets, from last year:
Cory Moll, a worker at our busy, busy Union Square Apple Store, is starting up a (can you guess by now?) UNION.
Oh noes!
See? Check it:

“Work Different,” it says:

Via Cory Moll
It’s not much yet, but Cory’s been getting national (and international) attention the past few months.
And folk art – there’s folk art already:

Hey, why doesn’t somebody, you know, in local media, look into this situation?
(Consider that a challenge to you, personally, if you want.)
All right, Apple workers, rise up and “Work Different.”
This is what it looks like when an Apple Store opens in the 415 – people seem genuinely happy, but who knows…

What’s this – Apple’s is doing “Union Awareness” training at Apple Stores all over the country this Tuesday morning, November 8, 2011?
Yes. Josh Lowensohn has the story.
Well, that’s news to me. Thanks, CNET!
And who’s the prime mover of this movement? It’s San Francisco resident Cory Moll, that’s who. (I don’t know why he doesn’t get more attention around town…)
Now if I were in charge of fighting unionization at Apple, I’d start handing out free bunny-ear iPhone cases to all workers. You know, as a way to win them over.
Like this:

All right, we’ll just have to wait and see how this Apple vs union fight turns out.
In the meantime, feel free to send the unionizers a message, why not?

Michael J de la Merced has all the deets about how everybody”s telling the FCC how great AT&T-Mobile would be.
How could this marriage go wrong with so many supporters (like AVAYA, Brocade, Facebook, Microsoft, Oracle, Qualcomm, RIM, Yahoo)?
Will Sprint and Verizon be the only ones to object? Will Steve Jobs and Apple weigh in at some point?
Anyway, read below for what popped up my inbox this AM.

1) AVAYA, Brocade, Facebook, Microsoft, Oracle, Qualcomm, RIM, Yahoo!: “The challenge of keeping pace with consumer demand and continuing to lead globally in wireless broadband services and products requires that we tackle the issue on multiple fronts. Many policy related efforts will not be able to quickly address near term capacity needs. The FCC must seriously weigh the benefits of this merger and approve it. Such action will help to meet the near term wireless broadband needs of consumers and ensure that we are globally competitive as the world increasingly embraces wireless broadband connectivity.”
http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/document/view?id=7021686027
2) Sequoia Capital: “From the microchip to the mainframe to the PC to the Internet to mobile computing, venture capital have been an integral part of an economic model that has stimulated growth time-and-time again. The technology start-ups we work with will be a key beneficiary of this more efficient and robust national wireless network. We are in favor of the Commission approving this transaction.”
http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/document/view?id=7021686028
3) Joint Venture Capitalist Letter (Charles River Ventures, Technology Crossover Ventures, Matrix Partners, Norwest Venture Partners, Radar Partners, Lightspeed Ventures): “Many of the fast-growing companies we invest in are technology firms that would benefit greatly from the combination of AT&T and T-Mobile, a merger that will drive job growth, innovation and economic opportunity through a more efficient and robust national wireless network…By combining the physical infrastructure and spectrum positions of the two companies, the merged entity will be able to accomplish what neither firm can do on its own: namely, deploying a 4G LTE broadband infrastructure to more than 97% of the United States population…This merger represents a critical part of the solution to our spectrum crisis in the United States.”
http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/document/view?id=7021686024
4) Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers: “This commitment would help millions of Americans throughout the United States gain access to a network that can support innovative technologies, applications and devices….We are in favor of the Commission approving this transaction”
http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/document/view?id=7021686025
5) Information Technology Industry Council (ITI): “Unfortunately, even if Congress were to act today, consumers would not experience the benefits of making new spectrum available for at least five years. Which is why a combined AT&T/T-Mobile has some real appeal for many. The new entity would likely result in meaningful near and long-term improvements to the nation’s networks…The Internet, and Americans’ ability to access it from almost anywhere, has been one of the greatest drivers of our economy. Supporting initiatives that will increase infrastructure investment and enable even greater access to the Internet whether it’s over a wired or wireless connection is smart public policy, smart economic policy, and smart consumer policy. Our nation needs more spectrum, more investment, and broader adoption and accessibility.”

You know why you almost never see Lamborghinis with licence plates on the back in the 415? ‘Cause when you register them in CA, it costs low five-figures, baby.
And that’s a lot of scratch for a toy.
(Of course, if you want a sexy, imported, Lambo two seater for a little cheaper, there’s always the tandem Viaggio bicycle, right?)
Now, take it away Andyi – here’s an accounting of the fuss in Union Square last night:

“I dunno. There’s something about a expensive supercar being towed from a no-parking zone with the same care and indignity as a Toyota Celica that makes you smile and take photos. One thing worries me, though. This is:
1) A super-expensive car,
2) With no license plate,
3) Parked illegally,
4) Outside the Apple Store.
I’m 10% sure that I might have just missed a Steve Jobs sighting.
(Aside: another demo of the Nikon P7000′s special super-high-sensitivity shooting mode. The feature really shines in street shots like this one, where there’s enough light to see by but not enough to get a good shot from a normal camera. Apart from the low 3-megapixel resolution, there’s really nothing wrong with this shot. I tweaked it a little bit in Aperture, but no more than I’d adjust a shot I took in bright sunlight with any other camera. It was more or less fine as-is.)”

You know, I was just telling one my parole officers the other day, you know what this town needs is something you could call San Francisco’s Online Newspaper, or something. Wouldn’t that be appealing, SF? Well guess what - coming soon to an iPad near you, is The Daily from Rupert Murdoch.
Now, The Daily will be based out of Noo Yawk so it won’t have too much of a San Francisco focus at first, anyway, but for some reason the glitzy kick-off stage event will be in the 415 next week at our MoMA in the SoMA. At least that’s what they’re saying.
Expect Great Things!
This looks just like RP, you’ll see.

Our SF MoMA is a magnet for aging, trophy-wived media barons, for some reason. Check out Larry King’s visit with one of his wives from just last year:

While Consumer Reports monomaniacally jabbers on about the iPhone 4 antenna issue (Gee, didn’t everybody know about that already? And gee, didn’t everybody know about that, as well, already?), let’s review some real concerns:
1. You’re throwing away about $40 a some money (see Comments) each month by signing up for the iPhone/AT&T package as opposed to something else. That is, you’re paying a thousand dollar premium to use an iPhone over a two-year period. (That’s too expensive even for some quasi-billionaire nerds.) Which is fine, just as long as you know. If you’re on food stamps already, you don’t really need an expensive iPhone contract, right?
2. AT&T continues to be overwhelmed, in certain areas of the country, it seems, so that leads to dropped calls and other bad tings. Didn’t the iPhone 3 also have “signal woes” as well?
Issue number one can’t be fixed by applying duct tape or buying a bumper case, right? Isn’t this a much bigger problem than the antenna issue? Yes. Can’t you fix the antenna issue for about a dollar a month (over two years, added up)? Yep. Don’t most people get bumpers anyway? Yep. So, why would CR pick this particular nit to pick?
Issue number two can’t be fixed by applying duct tape or buying a bumper case, right? Isn’t this a much bigger problem than the antenna issue? Yes. Maybe CR could have withheld endorsement until Apple officially permitted iPhone users use a different cellular service? Yep.
So the whole idea of withholding a strong recommendation of iP4 over who is going to pay for a bunch of bumper cases does indeed smack of a stunt from CR.
Now, CR, why don’t you get some ads going, so you wouldn’t need stunts to get attention to stay relevant, to stay in business? Or work on getting a massive endowment so your manifest money troubles don’t make you act they way you do?
After all, a little duct tape never hurt anybody, right? Like this passenger plane, for instance. I guess that Piedmont Airlines could have started cancelling flights when this plane had an issue. But instead, they slapped on some tape and kept going with no fuss.
See?

via MobileKenny
P.S. CR: Also, you don’t know much about cars. You think you’re the automotive guru, but you’re not. Why you waste your limited financial resources to buy a bunch of vehicles from dealerships is beyond me… So, yes, you have authority, but the question is whether the general public should have given you that authority.

More than 100 souls showed up for yesterday’s remembrance of dead workers at FoxConn factories in China.
It went a little something like this.

I’ll tell you, I don’t what the deal is with the recent suicides at the factories of Foxconn “it’s not a sweatshop” Technology Group down China Way. But maybe I’ll find out more from the Chinese Progressive Association at the San Francisco Union Square Apple Store Vigil on June 17, 2010 at 5:45 PM
Don’t expect Apple workers in San Francisco to applaud the arrival of “life-sized Deathpads” come Thursday:

All the deets:
“San Francisco Community Vigil in Solidarity with Foxconn Workers. Apple Computer’s “DeathPad” Targeted for Inhumane Production Demands
San Francisco, CA – Chinese Progressive Association (CPA) is organizing a San Francisco vigil for Chinese workers at Foxconn, the Apple manufacturer where there has been a surge of worker deaths. In the last few months, 13 young migrant workers have attempted suicide, 10 workers have died while 3 remain in critical condition. A worker also died of extreme exhaustion after working a 34 hour shift. Apple computer’s “Deathpad” has brought huge profits to Apple at the expense of workers lives.
Chinese Progressive Association calls on Apple and Foxconn to take responsibility for the workers and to find real solutions to the extreme pressure and deplorable working conditions in the factory. We urge Apple to work with Foxconn and ensure that workers are being treated fairly.
What: SF Vigil in Remembrance of Worker Deaths at Foxconn
When: Thursday, June 17th, 2010
Time: 5:45 pm – 7:00 pm
Where: Apple Store in Union Square, 1 Stockton Street, San Francisco CA”
