I’ll tell you, I’m not a big fan of the vaunted The Wiggle bike route and here’s why:
FOR MOST PEOPLE, THERE’S A BETTER WAY TO GET FROM THE PANHANDLE TO DOWNTOWN, TO GET THERE AND BACK AGAIN
That’s why. This was my stab at promoting the Northern Wiggle,* aka the McAllister Pass,** aka the Hastings Cutoff. *** Some people listened, but most did not, oh well.
Anyway, aside from this route being a third of a mile shorter and faster and safer and relatively ped-free, it NEVER gets any SFPD Bicycle Enforcement Actions, the way, say, the intersection of Waller and Steiner gets.
Speaking of which, now more people are joining the SFPD, to “referee the Wiggle,” if only for a short time.

While 95% of cyclists using the Wiggle are really incredibly respectful of other road users, there is that small minority who give us all a bad name. I’ve always wanted to dress as a referee and hand out yellow and red cards to bad cyclists (and maybe some cars and peds too) and I’m using NOW! as my excuse!
Come join me in shaming the few bad cyclists out there and making the Wiggle just a little bit safer and more courteous!”
*I, myself, wiggle from street to street north of the Panhandle on my way inbound to Fulton and Scott – it depends on traffic.
**The pass over Alamo Heights, which the Southern Wiggle route mostly avoids by generally following the route of the former creek what used to drain the kind of valley where the Golden Gate Park Panhandle sits now.

Mind you, these aren’t big big city blocks the likes of which you’ll find in SoMA or out in the Avenues. These are small blocks chock-a-block full of bus stops. Check it, and remember that Ashbury used to have stops as well.
So hurrah for the SFMTA.
When is an SFPD “Sting” Operation NOT an Actual Sting Operation? It’s When the Motor Patrol Works “The Wiggle” on BTWD 2014Friday, May 9th, 2014
Ah, Bike To Work Day, that special day when the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition can bask in the glory that it endorsed the election of appointed Mayor Ed Lee. (Hey, did you know that he was the first Asian-American appointed Mayor of San Francisco? He’s very proud of that, all those years of obsequiousness plus the outright lying required to pull that one off.)
Anywho, this was the scene last night at the intersection of the so-called Wiggle bike route through the Lower Haight area.
One SFPD buckethead was stationed at this corner of Waller and Steiner and the other was cattywumpus across the street snaring those who blew threw the stop sign even while the SFPD is yelling, “Stop sign, stop sign.”
Simply, there was no element of deception involved so, ergo, this cannot have been a sting operation. Case closed.
The cyclists were cautious and confused, mostly. They didn’t know how long to stop. Some stayed there for like ten seconds trying to remember how to signal a left turn. Traffic backed up a bit, as you can see:

Anyway, the bike coalition people called up SFPD higher-ups to see if there was a “sting operation” going on but of course they said no, because, as stated, this kind of thing isn’t a sting operation.
Oh, here’s Officer Scott’s ride from last night. Ask him about his “Porsche 996” (aka 911) sports car and get his opinion about whether he considers it a “modern Porsche.” I’m sure he’ll have an answer.
Oh, I saw scores of cyclists and two cops – here’s the racial makeup:
SFPD: 100% African American
Cyclists: 100% Caucasian*
People, you oughtta stay off the Wiggle – you can easily avoid it by turning a block sooner or a block later.
And oh, do you think Officer Scott loves it, just loves it when you all take to the Twitter? Indeed he does.

Or at least it seems like every day.
Here he is on Waller in the Lower Haight last week. See? He’ll park his motorcycle and then stand in the street pointing to offending cyclists and counting out, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5…”
And then everybody gets to wait while he processes all the tickets.
Thusly. Now actually, a couple of these folks were just waiting for their friends, prolly because they didn’t fail to yield prolly because you had Officer R. Scott yelling away:

Here we go:
Yeah, so I know this is the same thing as last year but I’m surprised to see the sustained nature of this recent enforcement action.
1. Officer Scott has a “weakness.” Guess what, it’s sports cars! Owns a Porsche 996 he does. Then he explains that it’s a “modern 911,” which it sort of is.
2. Does he have advice for cyclists? Yes. It’s “SLOW DOWN” and it’s “you should be wearing a helmet” and “you should have your lights on.”
3. Does he also have a lecture? Yes. It’s “that call you just heard on my radio is about an assault with a hammer – I’d rather be answering that call.” See? Its like a guilt trip for all the recalcitrant cyclists of SF.
4. When the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition tells people to take the Wiggle route, is it basically telling them to not stop at stop signs? Yep, pretty much.
5. Do most of the people who live near the intersection of Steiner and Waller approve of this enforcement action? Yep.
6. Do many people coming up and down the Wiggle go too fast for conditions? Yes.
7. Do most of the offending cyclists bother to slow down just a little, you know, to make what’s called an Idaho stop (or a California stop or an Oklahoma stop)? No, they just blow right through. How did this culture develop? IDK, fixies?
8. Is there a way to avoid all this rigmarole by using the Unwiggle, the same basic route but using Fillmore and Pierce instead of cop-heavy Steiner and Scott? Yep.

The thing is is that some businesses on 3rd Avenue, where a couple block will get shut down weekly, don’t seem to be aware of the CSFM.

I myself have no particular beef with the new farmer’s market* but I cry foul at the SFMTA-type, everybody’s-a-winner, everybody-supports-this-new-thing, just-wait-until-you-see-the-transformation-of-the-Inner-Richmond style of campaign behind it.
Anyway, Lord knows that Sundays at that part of Clement can be a bit depressing, what with infrequent bus service, a number of empty parking spaces, and lots and lots of closed storefronts abutting a handful of thriving businesses.
(One assumes that most customers of the 3rd Avenue Burger King and Sloat Gardens will figure another way of getting to and fro asides from approaching from the north.)

“This is the “youthful” Peter Lauterborn form Supervisor Mar’s office. Glad to see the market being covered.
The date has been pushed back, but only because of scheduling needs. The MTA has been very supportive of the project and it is currently projected to start June 23rd after the ISCOTT hearing on 6/13.
The reroute is just 7 blocks total, the existing merchants are very supportive of the project, and we have had well over 100 letters of support come into our office. We feel very good about this project. (The only issue has been with the bouncy house, which was really just an example from other markets and that’s been scrapped already.)
But if people have specific concerns they should feel free to email or call my direct line. Of course we want to mitigate any inconveniences to people.

The Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM) is managing the proposed market. AIM is primarily an educational non-profit which uses its six large, diverse markets to help fulfill their mission. The food options would include both organic and conventional seasonal produce, bakers, meat and dairy, and even local artisans. Their markets have a wide range of price points and accept EBT cards (aka food stamps).
This street closure will be voted on at an upcoming meeting of the Interdepartmental Staff Committee on Traffic and Transportation (ISCOTT).

So let’s see, two or three weeks ago I came across this flyer (see below) and I thought, “How is it even remotely possible that we could have a large farmers market on Clement (complete with an inflatable Bounce House) without me hearing about it at least more than a month ahead of time?”
(You know, certain people came to town a while back and thought it would be a piece of cake to get TASERS approved for the SFPD, even though they were warned about which particular town they just unpacked their carpet bags in. This farmers market is the same kind of deal.)
Anyway, we’re ten days out from the purported Opening Day and I can now tell you that there’s no way that that this plan can go off on time. If only for the simple reason that the SFMTAMUNIDPTSFBCISCOTT hasn’t signed off on the idea. (Was it on the agenda of the most recent meeting? Nope! Is it in the minutes? Nope! Oh well.)
Speaking of which, it hadn’t occurred to me that the #2 Clement would just skip the start of Clement altogether. So yes, MUNI won’t be delayed by the Clement Street Farmer’s Market, only the people who ride MUNI will be delayed. Fair ‘nough.
Any land use proposal has its pros and cons, right? If certain people understood that, certain people wouldn’t be so disappointed with Reality.

So, they’re going to shut down Clement between 2nd and 4th Avenues in the Inner Richmond every Sunday until 2:00 PM starting four weeks from now on June 9th, 2013?
What? This is news to me! The opening date strikes me as highly, highly improbable, but what do I know?
The next steps for this concept:
– Monday, May 20, 2013: Community Meeting at 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM, Richmond District Police Station, 461 6th Ave between Anza and Geary.
– Thursday, May 23, 2013: Interdepartmental Staff Committee on Traffic and Transportation (ISCOTT) Hearing, One South Van Ness, Seventh Floor, Room #7080.
OK, we’ll see how this one goes.
IMO, the SFMTA isn’t going to laugh off having the #2 Clement make a quarter-mile detour to get to a parallel street only to have to drive another quarter-mile to get back to Clement.
And I’ll point out that Clement Street itself is kind of a farmers market already on Sundays.
And I’ll point out that 2:00 PM is kind of a busy time on Clement in the Inner Richmond on Sundays.
And I’ll ask how does this proposal square with our Prime Directive of “Transit First?”
Now let’s hear from youthful Peter Lauterborn, Legislative Aide to District One Supervisor Eric Mar:
I am writing you because of your past interest in opening a farmer’s market in the Richmond. And while I have been quiet on the subject for a little while, it is not for a lack of work. We are at the point of nearing approval for a significant market entering the neighborhood!
The older plans for smaller markets all fell through, so we’re going big! This plan calls for a Sunday morning street closure of Clement from 2nd to 4th Aves on Sunday mornings. AIM plans very robust, well-rounded markets that are a major draw.
Major highlights of the AIM Market:
– Wide range of local products, including eggs, milk, cheeses, meats, etc.
– Include enrichment such as children activities, live music, and even kids jumpers.
– Provide matching dollars for “food stamp” users.
– Based on usage, the parking loss should be a non issue and the 2 Clement bus rerouting isn’t a problem. We are also planning outreach to all of the existing produce merchants along Clement. Also, the SF Bike Coalition is going to help make this a friendly event for those who don’t drive.
The Asks: As people who have advocated for a market, this is the time where we need your leadership the most! Our plan is going before the MTA for the street closure, and we need support!
1. Write a letter of support explaining why the Richmond needs a farmer’s market and how, given the low usage of Clement on Sunday mornings, this is the right use of public space. (send to Peter.Lauterborn@sfgov.org). The letter should explicitly support the street closure.
2. Encourage friends and community members to ask write!
3. Attend a community meeting on Monday May 20, 5:30-6:30pm at the Richmond Police Station. And bring out allies!
4. Bonus! Come to the MTA hearing on Thursday May 23rd at 1 South Van Ness to support the motion.

I’ll tell you, I’ve been waiting years for a MUNI alternative to pop up and look, it’s here.
Now I’m not talking about the corporate buses (like Google, Apple, FaceBook and so on) that have been around for a decade or so, and I’m not talking about Uber, Lyft, Sidecar and the like and I’m not even talking about the private version of the taxpayer-subsidized Twitter Express, the 83X.

See that? The bus comes with WiFi and leather seats, but they cost three times as much as MUNI. And I’m supposing you and your wheelchair would be better off on MUNI, just a guess. And, oh yes, you pretty much need an Apple iPhone (or as close an iOS device as possible) to climb aboard.
Now you’d think the MSM would be all over this new company, but no. So far, Leap has escaped notice, except from this bloke called Stilgherrian from Down Under. (Uh, he’s _not_ a fan. I haven’t seen a booting like this since Bart vs. Australia)
“This little blue bus symbolises everything that is wrong with the current bubble and boom of internet startup culture. It’s in San Francisco. It belongs to Leap Transit. And, on May 13, this “better bus” — OMFG, it has leather seats and wi-fi! — began operating as part of what’s billed as a “shuttle service for San Francisco commuters.”
Bonus bon mot:
“This socialized [x] is slow and unprofitable. Let’s start a [x] for rich people that pays its employees less.”
Leave there be no doubt, Leap Transit is a wannabe MUNI disrupter. See?

Leap runs on weekdays during commuter hours. That’s from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM and from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
We currently only support iPhone, but we will be supporting other platforms very soon.
