The Apple Retail Workers Union just had its first birthday. Here are the deets, from last year:

What’s this – Apple’s is doing “Union Awareness” training at Apple Stores all over the country this Tuesday morning, November 8, 2011?

And who’s the prime mover of this movement? It’s San Francisco resident Cory Moll, that’s who. (I don’t know why he doesn’t get more attention around town…)
Now if I were in charge of fighting unionization at Apple, I’d start handing out free bunny-ear iPhone cases to all workers. You know, as a way to win them over.

I’ve told you before, taxi drivers, and I’ll say it again.
If you want to get healthcare and if you want local govt. to take you seriously, become a MUNI driver.
Anyway, the latest deets are below.
One of the group of San Francisco taxi drivers who isn’t afraid of a little protest, obviously. She has three kids and she’s from Brazil – maybe she’ll be at the big meeting:

Do I think it’s remotely possible that the bulk of a shift of taxi drivers will go on strike? No.
Do I think it’s probable that MUNI drivers will go on strike on August 2? Also no.
Anyway, the latest:
SF Transit Operator/Taxi Drivers Organizing Meeting August 1st
An open meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 1st, 2011 from 6pm to 9pm, between San Francisco taxi drivers and MUNI bus workers. (Everyone is welcome)
These meetings are to strengthen relations between the taxi workers and bus workers, and to envision a more united and organized public transit worker front. Taxi drivers of late have been protesting 5% credit card fees, rear seat payment terminals, and electronic waybill tracking.
Some MUNI and TAXI workers have voiced OSHA health and safety complaints. They are also protesting Proposition G, which is said to prevent workers from negotiating on their work conditions.
The MTA has recently approved a $233 million contract towards its controversial $1.6 billion project to begin tunneling under Chinatown. Meanwhile, taxi workers and MUNI workers are seeking to combine their efforts to not be forgotten and fight for their rights and demand to have what’s theirs.

There’s one of the exits for the Civic Center BART Station, and what do you see right next to it but a corporate bus stop, employees only, you know, just like the way that the Google, Apple, Genentech, UCSF, and even that Zynga company do it.
Do you see, SFMTA? Do you see how much you suck?

[UPDATE: And cabbies, you can just forget about your proposed strike right now, as nobody takes that seriously. What would your union-type slogan be, "Every Man For Himself?" I'm telling you, MUNI is constantly hiring bus drivers, so you all should switch rides and, you know, drive a bus. And then you could, with impugnity, call your passengers r-tards or whatever you want. Hurray!]
I’ll tell you, those poor melon farmers out there in the West Bay trying to scratch a living from the infertile sandy soils of the Outer Avenues, well, not only is their MUNI bus and streetcar service bad, taxi service is bad as well.
Now, your hack might not actually want to take you to 42nd and Ortega or whatever, but s/he is required by law to take you there because, technically, the Outer Sunset in within the limits of San Francisco County.* So maybe that’s OK, but what about the times when you want to get picked up at home and you live Way Out There? Well, there’s no onus on any particular driver to come and pick you up, so that’s part of the reason why you have to wait a long, long time sometimes.
Comes now the staffers of the SFMTA with a solution: A $5 “Peak-Time Radio Dispatch Fee,” but not just for Parksiders of the Great San Wastes and the like, it’s supposed to be for everybody calling for a cab. That means that you will owe the driver over $8 before you even get into the taxi. Hurray!

This super-genius idea came from a study from 2007 that concluded that San Francisco ought to:
“Implement a $5 dispatch surcharge during peak periods
Implement a $2 surcharge during non-peak periods.”
This will make the hacks happy as well the hack bureaucracy. It’s a win-win, baby!
But check it, the SFMTA is, once again, working on (or at least pretending to be working on) Peak-Time Permits, which would accomplish the goals that the SFMTA says it wants to accomplish.
Sometimes, when all the buses you see are going to the wrong way, a taxi’s the only way to get to your destination in time, right?

All the deets of all the proposed new fees:
Radio dispatch fee: $2 flat fee during nonpeak hours; $5 flat fee during peak hours
Gas surcharge fee: $0.10 per one-fifth mile, $0.10 per minute of wait time
Wait time and mileage fare: From $0.45 per one-fifth mile ($2.25/mile) to $0.55 per one-fifth mile ($2.75/mile), and $0.45 per minute ($27/hour) to $0.55 per minute ($33/hour).
And look, the SFMTA is going to have Taxi Town Hall Meetings before the big meeting on May 17th:

¡BASTA! CodePINK, Cindy Sheehan, and all Vulnerable Folks are calling on us to STRIKE, MARCH and OCCUPY Sacramento beginning MAY DAY!
On May 1st, May Day, Beltane, International Workers Day, we will gather 11:30am at 24th & Mission, SF, march with the Coalition of Immigrants & all Workers to the 1pm rally in Civic Center, from where we will launch our STRIKE MAY 2011 march to Sacramento!
At 3pm, we will march from the Civic Center to the Ferry Building and take the 6pm ferry to Vallejo.
For the next 8 days we will march to Sacramento thru American Canyon, Napa, Suisun, Fairfield, Vacaville, Winters, Woodland and Davis doing actions – marches, rallies, press conferences, flyering, bannering – along the way. (for the exact route and issues,click here)
We are calling on YOU to STRIKE – NO BUSINESS AS USUAL – and come walk, bike, skateboard, carpool, train with all of us vulnerable folks, to get to Sacramento.
We will arrive in Sacramento on the 9th, the same day the 5 day teachers’ occupation of the Capitol begins. We will set up a TENT CITY and OCCUPY the capitol until the legislature votes OUR budget!
Our general theme is: 1) NO MORE TAXES for WARS & OCCUPATIONS; and 2) NO MORE TAX BREAKS for the RICH & their CORPORATIONS!

Well, they’re bringing back the old logo at JAL, the one with the crane as opposed to the suggestion of a crane’s wing or whatever some consultant or whomever got paid seven figures to wax on about back in ought-two.
Nine years ago, we had a couple of fun, smiling guys, right? But these days, we’ve got only sourpusses, stern fellows who take their jobs all serious. (Note the ID badge, as if CEO-dude would actually need one.)
Now, back in the day, I’m sure the JAL would want you to notice the latest and greatest long-haul carrier of the time, the 747-400. Of course even then it was kind of an old model. I’m sure they wanted you to notice the winglets, which were relatively new for Boeing.
Now, the Queen of the Skies these days (as far as JAL is concerned) is the second-gen Boeing 777, with humongous, high-bypass engines from GE. And with raked wingtips, ’cause that’s the new thang. Thanks for showing us your best plane!

Boy oh boy, when you hire PR flack Sam Singer to represent you, as many others have done, he won’t just hide in some office, oh no. What he’ll do is go out in the field and meet your nemesis head on. As here, during yesterday’s big labor rally / march / sit-in in and around Union Square.
With hundreds of unionists assembling behind him on Market Street, Sam sang to the media, complete with Frank Chu watching on.

No, not you. You’re a peach, you average-or-better Toyota Prius driver in San Francisco. The problem is all the thousands of other drivers of Priuseses in town. You know, the left 40% of the bell curve.
What’s the deal with you all? You drive as if you’re the only people on Earth. So, if there are a lot of streetlamps on at night, don’t bother turning on your headlights cause how does it benefit you, right? And if you want to cross town, just drive through the Sunset Tunnel – no hills and no red lights! And if you want to park, just do it the way you feel, you dig? You’re entitled.
As here, where a hastily parked Prius turns busy Stockton Street into a slolom course. I mean, its rear is more in the traffic lane than not. But for a bad San Francisco Prius driver, that’s a parking job well done, now let’s find that Starbucks:

Now don’t be talking about confirmation bias. Oh no. Just check it out for yourself, on the streets.
So, Volvo drivers are the ones who don’t know that you’re thereand Prius drivers are the ones who know that you’re there, but they just don’t care.
(And someday somebody will explain to me how the EPA mileage estimates are lower for the 2010 model than they were for the 2004 model, even though the roomier 2010 model is better in many ways and, in real life, gets better fuel economy. Did somebody mislead us about fuel economy, back in the day?)
All right Prius driver, enjoy your rolling triggerfish, but try remember that you’re not the only person in the world.
