The Good and the Bad of Our SFMTA’s Recent Rejiggering of Oak Street Near Horrible Octavia “Boulevard”

What’s this? Well, it’s traffic backing up on Oak from failed Octavia Boulevard all the way up to the top of Alamo Heights, like Fillmore.

Why? Let’s hear about the SFMTA’s 2014 to-do list from Rose Garrett of Hoodline:

Restriping Oak between Octavia and Laguna and reconfiguring parking so that two full right turn-only lanes would stretch the entire block of Oak and two additional lanes would continue straight

What’s happened is a change of driving culture so that nowadays, drivers feel less like suckers when they queue up in the right lane of Oak and there’s less line-jumping to the right between Laguna and Octavia:

Some still do of course, but this happens less than before:

Now’s not the time to get into why the 100% perfectly earthquake safe Central Freeway was ash-canned for this deadly Octavia Boulevard monstrosity. But now, apparently, is the time to try to fix things, you know, a decade later.

Already, those wishing to stay in Frisco now have a clearer shot of escaping this mess by using the left lanes. New construction with $3000-something per month non-rent controlled studios will dominate the north side of this block. We’ll see how this one goes.

It’s hard for a needlessly prideful political animal like the SFMTA to admit that it made a mistake constructing this “vision” of the New Boulevard Movement or whatever the Hell it was called backed when the failed Boulevard Movement was in full swing. But now, after some Berkeley prof has gotten all that money in consulting fees and basked in the glory of those award ceremonies, our SFMTA is less possessive of its creation – it’s more willing to admit its mistakes, if not through a press release, but at least by trying to fix things.

Now, is it good for traffic to back up a half-mile on a regular weekend afternoon? No, but this is an improvement nevertheless.

Let’s review:

tiger team is a group of experts assigned to investigate and/or solve technical or systemic problems. A 1964 paper defined the term as “a team of undomesticated and uninhibited technical specialists, selected for their experience, energy, and imagination, and assigned to track down relentlessly every possible source of failure in a spacecraft subsystem.”

So our school district employees drive around the 415 to put the beat down on noncompliant handicapped ramps and whatnot?

NOPE! Believe it or not, that rat tail you can see at bottom is our Stars and Stripes. Above it is the flag of the State of California. (You can still see the bear a little bit.)

“The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

The Lies of the SFHA: “San Francisco Housing Authority Does Not Transfer Any Family…Because of Race…”

Well here’s the statement:

The San Francisco Housing Authority does not transfer any family to any particular apartment, community, neighborhood or development because of race, color, sex, religion (creed), disability, familial status, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation, marital status, source of income, or age.”

Of course it’s not true, but that’s the statement.

The point of it is to discourage transfer requests, that’s true.

But they could have phrased it differently, that’s all.

This area is about six blocks from San Francisco City Hall.

Here’s the exact same pair of flags from three years ago, would you agree?

And the DRUG FREE ZONE warning sign is still there as well. (But, of course, this isn’t actually a drug-free zone. Not in the least.)

Oh well.

So, why do we even have flagpoles then?

Perhaps putting them in was a bad idea? Perhaps it’s easier to put in a flagpole than to take care of a flagpole over its lifetime? Perhaps we should take these flagpoles down if this how City, County, State and/or Federal officials are handling things?

Perhaps Redevelopment of the Fillmore was a bad idea?

Perhaps other federally-funded projects, such as the useless Central Subway, are bad ideas as well?

Please point me to something else in the world what looks like this, on JFK westbound in front of the Conservatory of Flowers.

Here’s what you do, you get a car and then drive west from Stanyan.* And then you think, “Why is my body closer to the left side of the road than the right?”

Simply, this is a mess.

Could maybe a traffic engineer take a look at this design? You know, at some point?

Note the absence of a stop line for bikes next to the stop sign. I think that’s on purpose…

Oh well.

*Speaking of Stanyan and JFK Drive, there needs to be a traffic signal at the east end of JFK where it intersects with Kezar Drive. Maybe someday…
