ZOMG, the Sumo Fruit are Here Again! – Called Dekopon in Japan, Hallabong in Korea – Sweetest Citrus in the World

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

The sweetest citrus in the world, Sumo aka Dekopon デコポン aka Hallabong 한라봉, has just hit town, and for just the second time in history.

Get all the deets from last year’s Los Angeles Times. Check it:

“I’ve tasted more than 1,000 varieties of citrus, and to me the Dekopon is the most delicious.”

And now in 2012, they even have these special mandarin oranges in New York City.

Respect! These things could turn into a bigger seasonal food fad than those fictitious Mackinaw peaches. The Mackinaw peaches, Jerry! The Mackinaw peaches!

Dekapons as seen at the new Whole Foods Haight Ashbury last year – they’re back at WF this year but without the cardboard flats:

It’s the biggest mandarin you’ll ever see, per the Berkeley Bowl.

Yes they’re big, yes they’re ugly, yes they’re pricey, but they’re super sweet

Its like having a circus in your mouth.

But get ‘em fast, cause they’ll be all gone by next month.

Enjoy.

OMG Lemur Update! Our San Francisco Zoo Puts on a Thanksgiving Feast for 15 Adorable Lemurs

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Here’s what’s up at our San Francisco Zoo on the day before Thanksgiving:

“Today, the Zoo’s lemurs received a Thanksgiving feast of some of their favorite foods – green beans; a fruit salad of apples, bananas, and grapes; sweet potatoes; and turkey made out of monkey chow. Their glasses were filled with apple juice. Sitting politely at a formal table, the lemurs sat respectfully and then ventured onto the table to enjoy their feast.”

You can’t beat that, huh? All right, see you there!

SAN FRANCISCO ZOO LEMUR FUN FACTS:

The Zoo has a group of 15 lemurs on Lemur Forest – six ring-tailed, four red-ruffed, three black and whites; two blacks. There are nearly 100 species of lemurs in Madagascar today.

Endemic to the island of Madagascar off the coast of Africa, lemurs were named after the lemures or the ghosts/spirits of Roman mythology.

Lemurs can be very small, weighing as little as 1 oz., or up to 20 lbs.

Like their wild counterparts, the Zoo’s lemurs can be very vocal. Their loud calls can be heard throughout the day. However, they also communicate with scents by scent marking with urine as well as rubbing the scent glands located on their wrists on trees, bushes and the ground.

Lemurs are classified as threatened or endangered. They only inhabit approximately 10% of the island of Madagascar. Deforestation, hunting for bushmeat by native inhabitants, and live captures for the pet trade are the culprits of their decline in numbers.

Most lemurs are arboreal, thus the Zoo’s Lemur Forest is a perfect environment for them. The lemurs can be seen clinging to trees and leaping throughout the day.

15th Annual Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival a Huge Success Under the Pouring Sun

Monday, September 13th, 2010

If you’re into chocolate and free swag, then the 15th Annual Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival would have been for you.

The line for a Kara’s Cupcakes mini-cupcake from their iconic truck was just insane on both days. Kara’s was the first exhibitor to run out of goods and it happened fairly quickly. Oh well.

Anyway, see the photos, and take a look at this full trip report from Garky Eats and/or Ewok1993

The wait for Kara’s might have gotten up to 15 minutes for a while there on Sunday. They had a sign denoting the flavors on the truck for part of the time anyway…

Liquid choco with Bailey’s:

And wouldn’t you just love a bangle full of mini-macaroons? Of course the macaroon is The New Cupcake, don’t you know.

See you next year!
