It’s Official: Frisco Now has More Cars, Drivers Than Ever – DMV Sez We Now Have Over 500,000 Vehicles

Of course this count includes motorcycles and trucks and trailers, but the vast bulk of that is made of plain old cars, the likes of which the people employed at our SFMTA and SFCTA falsely say are now “disappearing” from the streets of San Francisco.

You want another example? How about something like:

“SFMTA officials said this was due to factors including increased compliance from drivers, reduced vehicle ownership…

Simply, your “urbanist” friends are lying to you, or rather, lying to themselves. IRL, car ownership was going up in Frisco back then and it still is now. (Are repeated SFMTA misstatements like this Trump-style lying or Trump-style incompetence? You tell me. Moving on…)

To this: These DMV stats don’t count unregistered vehicles, and rides owned by many many ppl with out-of state-plates who live in town but don’t feel too groovy about paying any kind of annual ad valorem taxes to the CA DMV, and all the many UBER/Lyfts driven by all those new-to-Frisco drivers (how many, 40,000?) who live in Sac and Tracy and Santa Clara.

And let’s see, what other shibboleths can we… oh, Driver Licenses are up too, see?

(Darn it! My prediction for 2016 was  588,392 instead of the actual 558,228. Close enough.)

But Somebody told you that Young People Don’t Drive Anymore? Sry, Gentle Reader, that’s another misunderstanding. You see, it turned out that the recent recession-related dip in Vehicle Miles Traveled was actually RELATED to a RECESSION.

I’ll cheerfully concede that changes are afoot transportation-wise these days, but I just need to point out that our supposedly all-knowing and all-seeing SFMTASFCTA people have made a lot of mistakes and errors lately. That’s all.

What else. Oh, how about the reason why it still makes sense to own a car in Frisco. Take a look at this character:

Yes, that’s sanctimonious urbonaut and State Senator Scott Wiener in his aging, gone-to-Hell Nissan. (And of course he won’t cop to this 2016 incident of getting caught and photographed by a journalist while texting in traffic, because, IDK, it would draw attention to his foolishness? But that’s not my point.) My point is that the reason why it makes sense for him to operate this cheap, old, reliable car in Frisco, even though he lives close to transportation and even though he could UBER Lyft everywhere, is because he can drive around for as many miles as he wants for less than $1000 a year, including insurance, registration, gasoline, gasoline taxes – the whole lot. I’m aware of this because I have an aging, gone-to-Hell Toyota that I drive around as much as makes sense. So I can’t see how our existing stock of indestructible Nissans and Toyotas, Cadillacs, Lincolns too, Mercurys and Subaru are going to be obsolete this year or next year or the year after that or the decade after that.

That’s my point.

Look at all these rides in the Sunset for example. This is Frisco in 2017:

I don’t see how our SFMTA is going to take away these cars, have them whither away, Comrade, only to have some unknown tranpo system spring up to remobilitate these isolated souls living way out in the west side. MUNI is a high-cost low-speed system which is run for its employees and is hobbled by union “work rules.” How is that going to change anytime soon? And UBER Lyft, well the current service offered at current pricing is unsustainable, you know, financially. If you want to tell me how everything’s going to change I’ll concede – sure, eventually things will change. But how are you going to stop Sunset and Parkside residents from going to the nearby malls and Targets of San Mateo County by using the cars they own now and the cars they continue to buy? Our installed base of rolling stock is our installed base of rolling stock – these cars can and will live out their lives for decades more on the Streets of San Francisco. Sry.

PREDICTION: Car ownership and Driver License possession in the City and County of San Francisco will be once again UP to record-breaking numbers in 2017.

SUPERVISOR MALIA COHEN AND BOARD PRESIDENT LONDON BREED’S STATEMENT REGARDING RECENTLY REVEALED TEXT MESSAGES BY SFPD OFFICERS

SAN FRANCISCO – At the full Board of Supervisors meeting today, Supervisor Malia Cohen and Board President London Breed issued the following joint statement regarding the recently revealed racist and homophobic text messages sent by a new group of San Francisco police officers.

“It has barely been a year since the last time we issued a joint statement about racist and homophobic text messages exchanged by SFPD officers. In that time, we’ve witnessed the tragic shooting of Mario Woods; the launch of multiple investigations; our community gripped by protests and pain; and—in a maddening twist—officers from the last texting scandal back on duty in SFPD uniforms.

When is enough, enough? We talk about implicit bias training, yet time and again are confronted with explicit bias by those who are sworn to protect the community. This behavior cannot be tolerated without consequence; the City must rededicate itself to police reform. 

As Supervisors, we have written June’s ballot measure to require independent investigations of all officer involved shootings. We pushed for and helped fund body cameras for every officer. We called for the federal investigation into Mario Woods’ shooting. And we led the effort to stop the proposed $300 million jail. 

But there is clearly more work to do. We need more diversity and bias training, culturally competent community relations, data collection, independent investigations, accountability, and transparency. And as we recruit more officers, it’s imperative we continue to fight for increased diversity on the force.

We urge the Police Commission and Chief to seek the fullest possible disciplinary action for the officers involved in this recent action, and we will work with the Mayor, the Department, and community stakeholders to create an action plan to prevent these incidents from ever happening again.”

AT&T Crows About Its New Cellular Tower in the Sunset District: A Stealthy Installation to Improve Connectivity

Is there a new cell phone antenna installation in this photo here? Yes, but you probably couldn’t tell by looking.

Is this the kind of thing that San Francisco wants? Apparently.

Anyway, the answer to wireless connectivity is more antennas, IMO. So this is good.

“SUNSET DISTRICT RESIDENTS BENEFIT FROM AT&T NETWORK UPGRADES WITH MORE COVERAGE, MORE CAPACITY

Enhancements Will Improve Connectivity and Performance for
Mobile Voice and Data Network

SAN FRANCISCO, CA. SEPTEMBER 9, 2011 — AT&T* today announced more network upgrades in the Sunset District of San Francisco designed to provide its customers faster speeds, increased reliability and best-in-class wireless service.

AT&T’s network enhancements include a new cell site designed to improve coverage in residential and commercial areas along Sloat Boulevard from Meadowbrook Drive to 39th Avenue, and on Sunset Boulevard from the intersection at Vicente Drive to Morningside Drive.

In addition to expanded coverage from the new cell site, AT&T has added additional capacity to more than 160 cell sites in San Francisco, including several across the Sunset District to help improve overall service.

“Adding more capacity to a cell site is like adding more lanes on the freeway so that voice and data traffic flows faster,” said Terry Stenzel, AT&T Vice President and General Manager for Northern California and Northern Nevada. “Whether customers are talking, texting, e-mailing, surfing the net, streaming music or video, using their favorite apps, or conducting business we want to make sure they have a good mobile broadband experience.”

In addition, AT&T continues upgrading cell sites with fiber optic and Ethernet connections back to the central switching facilities, enabling faster 4G speeds.**

“We’re investing in our network in the Sunset and in San Francisco because we’re committed to providing best-in-class wireless voice and data service to our customers,” said Ken McNeely, AT&T’s California President. “AT&T has invested nearly $775 million in its San Francisco Bay Area wireless and wireline networks from 2008-2010, and we will continue investing and making network improvements.”

AT&T’s mobile broadband network provides several important advantages for customers, including the ability to talk and surf at the same time. For instance, customers can look up directions to an event while still talking on the phone, or browse social media sites will chatting with a friend. AT&T also provides access to voice service in more than 220 countries and data service in more than 200 countries. Business Traveler magazine recently named AT&T as having the “Best Mobile Coverage in the World” – the fourth time AT&T has received the distinction.

In addition, most AT&T customers have access to nearly 27,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hotspots across the country, and nearly 800 across the San Francisco Bay Area at no extra charge. With half of AT&T customers now using smartphones, the popularity of Wi-Fi is soaring. In 2008, there were about 20 million connections to the AT&T Wi-Fi Network. In 2010, that skyrocketed to more than 320 million Wi-Fi connections, and in just the first 6 months of 2011 customers have made more than 443 million connections to the AT&T Wi-Fi Network.”
