Oh poor Larry Ellison!
Apparently, having the taxpayers of San Francisco fund his boat race debacle is taxing his nerves.
“Larry talked to me candidly about the challenge of working with the city. So if he wins again, I would guess that unless the city comes up with a lot of money to keep the cup here, it’s going elsewhere. Larry’s not going to keep funding it himself. Personally, I can’t imagine that there would be an America’s Cup in San Francisco again.”
Now, does Larry have an official spokesmodel? (I don’t think so. Else Larry might have issued a statement after the death of Andrew Simpson.) So I guess Julian Guthrie is serving in this capacity? OK fine.
Uh, Larry Ellison/Julian Guthrie, don’t you realize that the City of San Francisco is funding the 2013 America’s Cup?
So, Larry Ellison, it’s you who owes us money, not the other way ’round.

Issue Two is this: Julian Guthrie, you’ve ridden this douche canoe so far upriver that you’ve lost touch with reality. You have access, but what have you done with it?
I’ll tell you, I don’t know why former Mayor Gavin Newsom trying to cut a sweetheart deal with Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison in exchange for being made Honorable, Grand Exalted Ambassador at Large for the America’s Cup 2013 isn’t considered a form of bribery, but there you go.
Anyway, the upshot is that Sting will have a place to perform his greatest hits in the 415 on June 2nd, 2013. Ticks go on sale February 22nd. Deets below.

Now, do these tour buses really make Alamo Square “the Wild West?” No, not at all. So, why did former Interim Supervisor Christina Olague say such a thing?
Well, because she was running for election and she didn’t want to piss-off the hyper-sensitive homeowners of the Western Addition.
Did that work?

Hey, remember that whole sit / lie deal in Haight Ashbury? Well, the people behind the sit lie initiative are the same people behind the “San Francisco Skateboarding Association” and this new press release.
“Skateboard Group Condemns Supervisor for Criticism of Free Civic Center Event
The San Francisco Skateboarding Association had strong words for a San Francisco Supervisor critical of the skateboard and BMX contest held in the Civic Center Plaza this weekend. The event is free and open to the public.
“By publicly condemning the Mountain Dew Tour in their inaugural year in SF, Supervisor John Avalos continued a practice perfected by our parents’ generation of elected leaders: bash skateboarders and deny us access to public spaces in San Francisco,” said Bryan Hornbeck, President of the SF Skateboard Association.
In the mid-80’s San Francisco became the birthplace of a worldwide phenomenon known as “streetstyle” skateboarding, where skaters utilize man made structures to express themselves* in ways no architect ever imagined. The Dew Tour brings professional athletes from around the world to compete in a world-class skatepark. Local riders also get to participate. On Sunday, the skatepark will be open to the public for a community skate session.
San Francisco is also home to Thrasher Magazine, an internationally recognized skateboard publication and several high profile skateboard companies and retail establishments. The Dew Tour at Civic Center is seen as an economic boon to the San Francisco skateboard industry that employs hundreds of people, mostly under the age of 30.
“To us, this is the Super Bowl of skateboarding. Our store has seen a huge amount of traffic for the past two weeks because of the Dew Tour. This helps our business, which in turn helps our employees. Maybe Supervisor Avalos is upset that they took away his parking space in front of City Hall, but it’s a small price to pay for promoting our industry to the world,” said Kent Uyehara, owner of FTC Skateboard Shop on Haight St.
Organizers of the event say that thousands of hotel rooms have been booked for the participants and their families and that the event is being streamed and broadcast on network television to millions worldwide.
The S.F.S.A. seeks to advocate for skateboarders of San Francisco through organized representation and community action. The S.F.S.A. wants to improve the public’s perception of skateboarders through education, information distribution and community outreach with a focus on the creation of public skateboard parks for the youth of our great city. http://sfskateboarding.wordpress.com/”

Anyway, you’d think that the friendly Marinites would similarly welcome the Feds landing Alcatraz tour boats at Fort Mason, right?
Let’s hear from socially awkward, born-into-the-one-percent District Two Supervisor Mark Farrell in the very same pages of the Marina Times:
“The National Park Service’s (NPS) intention to study Fort Mason as a possible location for its Alcatraz tour ferry service is one of those ideas with serious and long-lasting impacts that must immediately be put to rest.”
(Yeah, it’s one of those ideas, huh? So like, Alex, I want “Ideas with serious and long-lasting impacts that must immediately be put to rest” for $1600?”)
Apparently, one set of aquatic tourists is the best thing in the world and another set of aquatic tourists is the worst thing in the world?
Now here’s the kicker. The reason why the white people of the Marina are worried about the Fort Mason proposal is that it’s a lead pipe cinch, owing to the lack of NIMBY laws on federal land:
“What makes the idea even more distressing to residents and establishments in the Marina is the lack of local environmental review and input that would be available. The NPS stated that environmental review of the Fort Mason site would be conducted under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and not under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), because Fort Mason is federal property. Without a CEQA process in place for Fort Mason, the enormous changes contemplated in the Marina will never be considered by our local government, and any NEPA appeal would have to take place in Washington through the federal courts. In my letter to the NPS, I asked that since they are prepared to undergo a CEQA analysis for the sites located at the Port of San Francisco piers, they should do the same for the NPS-owned piers at Fort Mason…”
So, don’t come here, Feds. Don’t come here where it’s super easy to do business, you know, without dealing with millionaire NIMBYs for decades, oh no, don’t even think about it! Feds, you must immediately put the idea “to rest.”
Well, we’ll just have to wait and see how that works…
