The Tour Buses of Alamo Square are Perfectly Fine

Like this one.

I suppose you could have heard the tour guide over the P.A. jabbering away, but the noise of the diesel engine was louder.

So no biggee, right?

So this isn’t actually kind of like the Wild, Wild West at all, right?

Oh, and NEWSFLASH, HOMEOWNERS: You actually live in the Western Addition. And actually, you’re not special.

Oh, and NEWSFLASH, HOMEOWNERS: The pols you consider friends actually don’t like dealing with you.

Oh, and NEWSFLASH, HOMEOWNERS: The white trash visitors you despise are happy people, generally. The white trash visitors you despise are BETTER THAN YOU, believe it or not.

So dry your tears and try to carry on.

Marina District Gratified by All the White People Who Showed Up for America’s Cup – But Says No to Regular Tourists

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

Work with me here. The recent America’s Cup scrimmage event up in San Francisco’s Great White North got this kind of reaction in the pages of the Marina Times:

“This event brought exactly the right kind of crowd to the Marina.”

Uh, white people with some extra folding money to spend – that kind of crowd?

Mmmm…

Anyway, you’d think that the friendly Marinites would similarly welcome the Feds landing Alcatraz tour boats at Fort Mason, right?

No.

Let’s hear from socially awkward, born-into-the-one-percent District Two Supervisor Mark Farrell in the very same pages of the Marina Times:

“The National Park Service’s (NPS) intention to study Fort Mason as a possible location for its Alcatraz tour ferry service is one of those ideas with serious and long-lasting impacts that must immediately be put to rest.”

(Yeah, it’s one of those ideas, huh? So like, Alex, I want “Ideas with serious and long-lasting impacts that must immediately be put to rest” for $1600?”)

Apparently, one set of aquatic tourists is the best thing in the world and another set of aquatic tourists is the worst thing in the world?

OK fine.

Hey Marina, look at this! You think the future can’t cross a bridge ride through a tunnel?

Now here’s the kicker. The reason why the white people of the Marina are worried about the Fort Mason proposal is that it’s a lead pipe cinch, owing to the lack of NIMBY laws on federal land:

“What makes the idea even more distressing to residents and establishments in the Marina is the lack of local environmental review and input that would be available. The NPS stated that environmental review of the Fort Mason site would be conducted under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and not under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), because Fort Mason is federal property. Without a CEQA process in place for Fort Mason, the enormous changes contemplated in the Marina will never be considered by our local government, and any NEPA appeal would have to take place in Washington through the federal courts. In my letter to the NPS, I asked that since they are prepared to undergo a CEQA analysis for the sites located at the Port of San Francisco piers, they should do the same for the NPS-owned piers at Fort Mason…”

So, don’t come here, Feds. Don’t come here where it’s super easy to do business, you know, without dealing with millionaire NIMBYs for decades, oh no, don’t even think about it! Feds, you must immediately put the idea “to rest.”

Well, we’ll just have to wait and see how that works…

Scottish Leader Addresses Commonwealth Club: First Minister Alex Salmond in Town to Promote Renewable Energy

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

San Francisco’s Commonwealth Club heard First Minister Alex Salmond discuss Scotland’s Place in the World last night. Here‘s what it looked like.

The avuncular FM is touring California (you know, talking with Jerry Brown and Fiona Ma and going Hollywood) to promote Scotland as the “Silicon Valley of marine energy.”

Here he is at 595 Market, along with Commonwealth Club Past President J. Dennis Bonney:

“Scotland targets Fortune 500 in US push for business - First Minister writes to top global companies in California ahead of trade mission

EDINBURGH, Scotland, June 17, 2012 — Over 70 leading California-based companies, including all Fortune 500 companies in the state, are being targeted as part of a new campaign to attract inward investment to Scotland.

The country’s leader, First Minister Alex Salmond, has personally written to top executives at leading companies which have been identified by Scottish Development International as potential investors in advance of his visit to the US on a trade mission.

In his letter, which is part of a wider SDI campaign to encourage some of the world’s most successful companies to consider setting up operations in Scotland, the First Minister highlights the benefits of choosing Scotland over any other nation.

The First Minister will be reinforcing the message that Scotland is ready to do business during his four-day visit to California. He stresses in his letter that Scotland - with its highly-skilled workforce and a cost-competitive business location – is a land of opportunity.

The First Minister said: “Scotland is already an economic success story and we make no apologies for going after new business at every opportunity. We perform better economically than everywhere else in the UK bar the southeast of England and that brings major business opportunities.

“Scottish Development International’s campaign is backed by a number of companies already investing in Scotland such as Pfizer and Amazon and the message is absolutely clear.

“Scotland is a land of major opportunity and it is open for business. We have a long and impressive track record in life sciences, sciences, technology and creative industries developing an environment where ingenuity and innovation can create jobs and wealth for Scotland.

“Even without our offshore oil and gas reserves, Scotland has the highest GDP in the UK outside London and southeast England.

“We have five universities in the world’s top 200, we rank first in the world in research productivity per unit of GDP and second in the world in research impact.

“Business operating costs for key functions can be almost a third lower here.

“This campaign will also send the message directly to the heart of US business community with print and online advertising running in The Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Business Times, New York Times and San Francisco Chronicle.

Danny Cusick, President, Americas, Scottish Development International, said:

“SDI has seven offices across North America, including a significant presence in California, to provide support and collaboration opportunities for key North American companies.

“This campaign is part of a global drive to attract new investment to Scotland. There has been a significant level of inward investment success over the last 12 months, with Amazon, FMC Technologies and State Street all making significant investments in Scotland. SDI is building on this with a continued focus on securing new, sustainable jobs and opportunities.

“It is clear that Scotland remains a location of choice due to our winning combination of qualities, including our highly skilled and educated workforce and efficient operating costs.

“This is an excellent opportunity to highlight Scotland’s competitive advantages to some of California’s biggest companies.”

“Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour” Finishes Up in Oakland Tonight – A Few Tickets are Still Available

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Last night’s show at the huge Oracle Arena was 90%-plus full, so I imagine it will be the same thing tonight. The seats aren’t cheap, but this is the official show from Michael Jackson’s family, so there you go.

Fundamentally, this is a Michael Jackson show for Michael Jackson fans (as opposed to it being a Michael Jackson-themed Cirque du Soleil for a more general audience, if that makes sense.) For more on this topic, Chloe Roth does a good job of explaining things here in the Culture Blog of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Here’s another opinion: “It’s amazing. Long, yet spectacular.”

Anyway, you’re never going to see the THIS IS IT Tour, so this is it, tonight is your last chance to see the substitute, your last chance to soak up the experience.

Better Know Your Local, Historic, U.S. Navy Aircraft Carriers: “Rum, Vodka, Wiskey” Aboard Alameda’s USS Hornet (CV-12)

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

The previous U.S.S Hornet (CV-8) made it about a year before being sunk in WWII, so the Navy recycled the name for CV-12, the museum ship we have berthed in Alameda these days.

That’s your Lesson of the Day.
