Judges under fire for Maui conference have history of tropical getaways

All the deets, ROF (Released on a Friday):

“July 13, 2012 / Ninth Circuit Public Information Office – The Ninth Circuit will reschedule its 2013 Circuit Conference to 2014 in Monterey, California. The postponement responds to the current budget constraints facing the federal judiciary and the federal government in general. The decision was reached earlier this week after consultation with the host hotel in Monterey, the Hyatt Regency.

“We firmly believe in the importance of the Conference in educating the federal bench and bar and in advancing governance of the Circuit. But we also recognize the need to conserve financial resources during the present fiscal crisis,” said Cathy A. Catterson, Circuit and Court of Appeals Executive. “We think this approach will meet both goals.”

The Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference has been held annually since 1944. Conferees include federal judges, lawyers, court staff, academics and government officials. The event provides a rich educational program and the opportunity to hold numerous business meetings.”

The “San Francisco Jewish Community” Paid for Supervisors Malia Cohen, Carmen Chu and Scott Wiener’s Trip to Israel Last Month?

Check it:

Gee, who didn’t go on this junket?

Now if I were a Supervisor, I’d prefer to take a $6000 [don't say bribe, don't say bribe] whatever and use it to head off to Trinidad, but that’s just me.

Vacation, all I ever wanted/

Vacation, have to get away

808 State: Oahu’s “Hitachi Tree” Certainly is Worth a Look the Next Time You Visit Hawaii

Monday, February 13th, 2012

This monkeypod in Honolulu’s five-star Yelp-rated Moanalua Gardens is quite an “exceptional tree,” don’t you think?

As it looked when I was there, on a slow day:

Check it out, next time you visit The Islands:

“The Hitachi tree, a large monkeypod tree with a distinctive umbrella-shaped canopy, grows in the middle of a grassy area in the middle of the park. The tree is registered as an exceptional tree by the City and County of Honolulu and cannot be removed or destroyed without city council approval.Japanese electronics manufacturer Hitachi, Ltd. has used the tree as a corporate symbol since 1973. An agreement between the Damon Estate and Hitachi gave Hitachi exclusive worldwide rights to use the tree’s image for promotional purposes in exchange for annual payments of US$20,000.”

It Begins: The Era of the Electric Car is Here on the Streets of San Francisco – Mind That Sidewalk Extension Cord

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

I’ll tell you, the value of a garage these days in the Greater Western Addition / NoPA is far greater than the value of any battery electric vehicle (BEV) you could imagine.

So that’s why you’ll soon be seeing more of this:

(Now, it’s not widely known, but if you want to buy an electric car like a Nissan Leaf, you need to have your charging area approved first and that means that Nissan tells the local authorities and PG&E that you have an electric car. Anyway, no charging station, no car, I think.)

But there’s nothing stopping you from lending a hand (or a cord) to anybody who needs some juice.

Well, nothing so far.

I don’t think the militant pedestrian groups around town are going to like seeing this kind of sitch, but that’s just a guess.

Will San Francisco make special legislation about sidewalk extension cords, you know, to clear things up?

Stay tuned…

Raygun Gothic Rocket Inspires Supervisor David Chiu to Consider a Burning Man Trip

Friday, August 6th, 2010

That 40-foot-tall Raygun Gothic Rocketship down at Pier 14 is already having an effect on people. For example, it has David Chiu, District 2 rep and President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, pining for the Playa.

Per Steve Rhodes, “after seeing this he might go to Burning Man for the fist time.”

Bon voyage!
