These are the only people I’ve ever seen at the white elephant known as Sharp Park, which, oddly, is operated by San Francisco even though it’s not even located in San Francisco.
So, why would Interim Mayor Ed Lee go against the Board of Supervisors, who wanted to sell off / give away / otherwise rid ourselves of this light-skinned loxodontine from Way Down In Pacifica? Well, middle-class welfare tends to be hard to eliminate.
And then there’s this constituency:
“City management of the golf course is handicapped by a sclerotic labor contract that has some employees earning six-figure salaries* for work that pays less than half of that on most golf courses.”
Oh well. I suppose our southernmost “run-down” golf course will continue to make us a national laughingstock.
And who’s going to pay for the $20-$30 million* worth of deferred work what this ball-and-chain needs?

The driver of this ride should have his/her license pulled until somebody in authoritah can figure out what went wrong:
But that’s not going happen, ’cause driving is a right, and not a privilege. In California, anyway.
I call this real red light running because it’s obvious that the errant driver entered the intersection on a red light (and I’m basically saying that the color of the light when a driver exits doesn’t matter and that peds need to wait for an intersection to clear whether or not they have a green. In California, anyway.) I don’t know if there was any bad behavior on the part of the ped(s).
The saving grace is that a lot of people who don’t know what they’re doing behind the wheel drive real slow. This is a possible drunkie…
I don’t watch the cable TV news myself, but here are a few points:
1. American-style measurements are all over the aviation industry, like measurement of speed (in nautical miles per hour) and altitude (in feet). Pilot confusion with differing measurement systems has killed passengers and crew IRL.
2. And yes, international travel isn’t as safe as domestic travel, for a host of reasons. American pilots have better training, on average, and they have an easier job of it, not having to deal with the Intertropical Convergence Zone and Russian paramilitaries, for starters. Not a single passenger has died due to a crash on a domestic flight on a large (we’re talking about something bigger than a private jet or a regional airliner) jet since 9/11. And if you want to talk about international flight on 100+ seat jets either going to or coming from America, we’ve lost a total of three passengers (on an Asiana flight at SFO) since 2001, that horrible year.
3. And the thing about cowboys – that’s a reference to the Boeing / American approach to automation vs. the Airbus / international approach. So a “cowboy” pilot has greater power to do something stupid, but also a greater ability to get out of trouble. A “cowboy” is more likely to have military experience. A cowboy is the opposite of a “college boy.” Oddly enough, the computer-assisted cowboy and cowgirl pilots are doing better, on average, than the auto pilot-reliant college boys and girls.
The job of these hosts is to be appealing (by looking good in a suit or a fuchsia(?) minidress(?), to look somber (due to the tragedy) and to goad the invited expert into saying what s/he knows in an interesting way. Seems as if they were getting that job done.
So yeah, asking about the metric system sounds like a stupid question, I’ll agree. But everything the hosts were talking about comes from real life, it comes from someplace. It’s not just Fox News waving the flag.
So laugh at Fox if you want, but they’re doing their job better than Jezebel / Isha Aran is doing its job of debunking Fox News. And, bonus, Fox News consulted an expert and Jezebel, which doesn’t know much about aviation, did not.
So, Fox News 1, Jezebel 0.
I guess I knew this.

How is the SFFC better than SF’s recent hosting of the disastrous America’s Cup?
BTW, NBC’s Trauma medical drama was a big piece of shit, you know, frankly. Now people might say that I shouldn’t say that, but I don’t think they’d contradict me. Yes, the Trauma people spent some money and some people benefited, but there’s no reason why they should be treated any different than any other group of visitors coming to town. Anyway, Trauma sucked, big-time, despite what the SFFC people said about it. And part of the reason why it was cancelled had to do with how damn expensive it was to film on the Streets of San Francisco. So, what I’m saying is that maybe the whole concept of filming Trauma on location in SF was a bad idea – I’m certainly not saying we should have subsidized its production even more than we did.
And if Hollywood says it doesn’t want to come here to film, that’s O.K. Some productions, the ones that make sense, will come anyway.
