THEORY: If a Corporation Illegally Markets on the Sidewalks of Frisco, It Will be Coerced Into Buying SFMTA MUNI Bus Ads

Thursday, May 25th, 2017

So here’s the theory. Say your marketing people go hog-wild with the chalk ads on the Streets of San Francisco, like this:

7J7C0902-copy

So then somebody calls 311 or somebody else posts a photo on the Twitter and then an investigator at the City Attorney’s Office takes a look at things and then the people at Parlophone / Warner Bros. get a jingle and then somehow things get smoothed over by the Brothers Warner or somebody else making at buy at the SFMTA MUNI for some hastily-created and more or less useless ads such as:

7J7C2628 copy

Cf. the Blue Wolf at a Dream Force about 1.5 years ago:

And then these hastily-created and more or less useless ads started to appear:

7J7C7595-copy

Just a theory, man.

And here’s the thing about chalk. You can’t scrub it off your car tires to avoid a citation and you can’t scuff into Frisco’s sidewalks, I’m srsly. What’s that, UBER, Microsoft, Verizon, et al, it’s “only temporary?” Well, yeah, sure, that’s what I’m talking about, it’s agin the rules, temporary or not.

Tree Mail: Major Cell Phone Service Providers Use a Giant Eucalyptus as a Temporary Utility Pole – Entmoot Expected

Thursday, May 18th, 2017

7J7C2154 copy

So our downsized and somewhat defunned Bay to Breakers 2017 is a coming this weekend so that means that Frisco’s annual street party will tax the bandwidth of Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint, so some of those suspects must be responsible for this temporary installation, which will allow all the partiers to get emails and texts and, IDK broadcast live or whatever the kids are into these days.

I’ve never seen this kind of tree-as-utility-pole setup, in all my years.

I’ll tell you, Certain People about town will NOT like seeing this.

I’ll get you started:

How AT&T Beat Verizon During Super Bowl 50: AT&T Has a Better Musical Line-Up, a Better Venue, and It’s Not Violating our Advertising Laws

Thursday, February 4th, 2016

I can’t believe that the Verizon people paid millions for the right to look like a bunch of jackasses during Super Bowl 50’s Super Week in Frisco.

Verizon doesn’t know/respect SF advertising laws? Apparently. Now it wants money back from our local Host Committee, the same committee that has committed to pay us, the people of San Francisco, back money if things don’t work out with SB50?

So that’s STRIKE ONE. STRIKE TWO is that even though AT&T DIRECTV isn’t an OFFICIAL SPONSOR, it has a BETTER LINE UP than what you can see up at SUPER BOWL CITY. See below. (IDK how available tickets are for any of these events now. I heard a radio ad when I was down at Pier 70 the other day but not since, oh well.

And STRIKE THREE is that AT&T’s party is down at PIER 70, where it belongs. Hey, why couldn’t Verizon have its parties down in that area instead of making office workers go through metal detectors in the Financial multiple times a day? (And man, Pier 70, the whole complex is amazing – there’s a lot of character / history here. Oh a and a few leaks when it rains, but they’re working on it…)

IMG_0030 copy

And of course, AT&T is working on making sure your phone works in the bay area over the next few days, no matter how many people are around you. But of course so is Verizon so it’s anybody’s guess who will win that race. I bet they’ll both do fine…

S0 BOO, Verizon. (Hey why not offer to pay SFGov all the money we’re out for your street party, Verizon? Write a fat check payable to “SF GENERAL FUND,” I’m srsly.

And YAY AT&T, why not?

Read all about it below:

“Feb. 4-6 Event Overview:

DIRECTV will partner with Pepsi to bring fans an unforgettable weekend of music, technology and art around Super Bowl 50. Attendees will be treated to the ultimate experience at San Francisco’s Pier 70, when they host three nights of live concert performances featuring Dave Matthews Band, Pharrell and more.

The innovative and premium space will be designed specifically for never-before-seen fan engagement and features state-of-the-art sound systems, unique artistic designs and projection-mapped photo walls for an immersive social media experience.

Artists performing each night include:

+ DIRECTV and Pepsi Super Thursday Night, February 4: Dave Matthews Band

+ Pepsi Friday Night Live, February 5: Pharrell Williams

+ DIRECTV Super Saturday Night Co-Hosted by Mark Cuban’s AXS TV, February 6: Red Hot Chili Peppers

Technology Overview:

DIRECTV COW at Pier 70: Sitting right outside the venue for the DIRECTV concert series, we have multiple antennas on the COW as well as two antennas inside the building that run with cables back to the COW. We can provide a tour and more details about network upgrades throughout the Bay Area and especially at Levi’s Stadium.

AT&T expanded its mobile Internet coverage: We invested more than $25 million so fans can post and share experiences on social media faster and easier than ever. This is part of our continuing investment to support growing demand for wireless devices and services… and, especially, to keep our customers connected from the moment they arrive for the big game.

Hey, is That Notorious “Bluewolf” Salesforce DreamForce Chalk Ad Company Making Amends with SFMTA Bus Advertising?

Thursday, October 8th, 2015

IDK.

Here’s your background.

I’ve never seen an ad like this afore:

7J7C7595 copy

How long did it take to create, one wonders? About two seconds?

No matter, I’m sure SFGov is starting to think of the bluewolf as a good corporate citizen now…

[UPDATE 2: Tech company defies city ban against putting logo on sidewalks]

[UPDATE: This webpage (“Dreamforce Swag”) was just pulled by “Bluewolf.” Here’s what it used to look like:

So that takes care of that.

So, no you didn’t have permits, right, Bluewolf people? Or if you do, then share the info – it sure would interesting to see that. Thank you, drive through. END OF UPDATES]

Via KatieOnViolin, you can’t do this:

Capturefsff copy

Oh, what’s that, it’s only temporary? Well, that’s what they all say.

And there’s this:

“Citizens can obtain permits for sidewalk stencils, but there is no legal means for a company to advertise using sidewalk stencils, Gordon said. Still, many companies throughout the years have created guerrilla marketing campaigns on city sidewalks, including Zynga and IBM.”

What you bluewolfers ought to do, you know, wikiwiki, is come on downstairs, buy some brushes at a CVS, and then start scrubbing…

SUPER BOWL 50 CELEBRATION Kicks Off Sept 10th – ELLIE GOULDING AND TRAIN Play Justin Herman Plaza – Free Concert

Sunday, August 9th, 2015

At 4:30 PM on Thursday, September 10th, 2015 you can head over to Justin Herman Plaza to see Ellie Goulding and Train perform live.

Hey, you know who’s hosting Super Bowl 50? That’s right, “the San Francisco Bay Area” is. (Shhh. Don’t tell our SFGov City Family about that.)

Speaking of which, SFGov is probably looking forward to getting some national attention for something other than the shooting of Kathryn Steinle.

All the deets:

Precedes NFL Kickoff Game:
PITTSBURGH STEELERS vs. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

The NFL kicks off both its 96th season and the season-long celebration of Super Bowl
50 with “2015 NFL KICKOFF PRESENTED BY HYUNDAI” – 7:30 PM ET Thursday,
September 10, it was announced Sunday night during NBC’s national broadcast of the
annual NFL/Hall of Fame Game. Festivities will take place in both New England, home
of the Super Bowl XLIX champion Patriots, and the San Francisco Bay Area, host of
Super Bowl 50.

Celebrations will begin in San Francisco with a free concert featuring multi-platinum
singer-songwriter ELLIE GOULDING and San Francisco’s own Grammy Award-winning
band TRAIN live at Justin Herman Plaza across from the historic Ferry Building. The
musical performances and activations in San Francisco are part of the year-long On
The Fifty campaign dedicated to celebrating the Super Bowl and commemorating Super
Bowl 50.

Performances by Goulding and Train will be featured in simulcast coverage of a 60-
minute pregame show from New England 7:30 – 8:30 PM ET on NBC and NFL
Network. The live pregame broadcast also will be available via NFL Mobile from
Verizon.

The concert and pregame show lead into the season opener between the Pittsburgh
Steelers and Patriots at Gillette Stadium (NBC, NBC Sports Live Extra on desktop and
tablet, Westwood One Radio Sports, 8:30 PM ET).

This is the 14th consecutive Kickoff celebration to start the season and the 11th time the
NFL has saluted the Super Bowl champions with the opening game in their stadium on
a Thursday in primetime. As part of the Kickoff events leading up to Super Bowl XL ten
years ago, the NFL incorporated musical performances from Los Angeles (home to the
first Super Bowl), Detroit (host of Super Bowl XL) and New England (which won Super
Bowl XXXIX).

Television’s most-watched studio show, NBC’s Football Night in America, will be live onsite
in New England.

Fans nationwide will participate in Kickoff festivities leading up to the season’s first
games. For example, in Chicago the Bears will host the “2015 Super Bears Shuffle 5K”
at Soldier Field, while Baltimore’s Inner Harbor will be home to the “Ravens Kickoff
Party” at Power Plant Live. In Pittsburgh, the Steelers will host the “Gatorade-Steelers
5K” at Heinz Field benefiting the Art Rooney Scholarship Fund. These are just a few
examples of the many ways teams and fans are getting back to football.

2015 NFL KICKOFF will be produced by RICKY KIRSHNER, the Executive Producer of
the Super Bowl pregame and halftime shows, and directed by GREGG GELFAND.
In addition to presenting sponsor Hyundai, top tier sponsors for the NFL’s Kickoff
platform include Bridgestone, Bud Light, McDonalds, Microsoft, Pepsi, Snickers,
Verizon and Visa.

Media may visit nflmedia.com to apply for credentials to cover the “2015 NFL Kickoff”
concert. The credential deadline is Friday, August 28. Media interested in covering the
game may apply for credentials through the Patriots.

It Takes a Village to Assemble a Cell Phone Tower in Golden Gate Park – All That Fuss Over This

Tuesday, May 12th, 2015

This is in the Panhandle, which I consider part of Golden Gate Park, the same way I consider a pan’s handle to be a part of the pan and the same way I consider the Oklahoma Panhandle to be a part of Oklahoma:

P1230112 copy

This is between Fell and Oak near Clayton, as opposed to the Verizon / AT&T unit near Ashbury what started going up a whopping 13 days afore the 2015 Bay to Breakers historic fun run and street party. Camden Avery of Hoodline has the deets on that temporary tower.

Here’s the Clayton install as seen on Monday – man, that’s a big crew:

P1230134 copy

In years past these mobile towers have been sited on the other side of Stanyan, but the traditional party location is closer to Masonic – this year the towers will be closer to the action.

We’ll have to wait and see how all this extra non-ionizing radiation flying about is affecting my mojo

Attention San Francisco: The Great Phonebook Recycle of 2012 Has Begun – If You See a Big Stack, Recycle Immediately

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Here’s a good dozen what sat in the lobby for twelve long hours.

Guess what? Nobody took even a one.

So these books got hauled off to the big blue bin when I got home last night. Good times.

And best of all,  those The Real Yellow Pages / AT&T / YP books are surprisingly small these days, so you can carry them all in just one trip, you know, before they get all soggy:

Uh, AT&T, what’s the point of this exercise?

Nobody in San Francisco wants your Yellow Pages.

I know you think that we do, but we don’t.

Does Verizon do this? No

Does Sprint do this? No

Does T-Mobile do this? No

So why do you do it?

I know that you can do it, you know, legally, but I don’t know why you do it.

If you want to get credit for giving minimum wage union members money, why not just give them money and be done with it?

Anyway, if I see any stack of your phonebooks anywhere about town anywhere near a big blue recycling bin or an AT&T store, they’re all going to get together tout de suite.

No charge.

See you in Hell, Yellow Pages people.

NB: Don’t try to “opt out,” San Francisco. All that does is give your contact information to AT&T so that they can ask you, every fucking year, if you still want to opt out. My conclusion: AT&T is a cancer.
